The only way to make a respectable MMO in an established third party IP is by using the setting, but going far enough into either the past or the future to give the development team creative freedom.  Star Wars MMO set during the movies?  Terrible idea.  Lord of the Rings MMO set during/between the books/movies?  Terrible idea.  Game of Thrones MMO set during the Song of Ice and Fire?  Terrible idea.

Just my opinion, of course.

How I would see an AAA publisher screwing this over out the gate in funding development:

 

- Wargs, giants, assassins that can change their skin, and dragonborns would all become playable races for standard character creation.

 

- You will fight mostly white walkers "beyond the wall" as an instanced dungeon by the end-game (the walls of which they will hide with fog and disguise as tree picture backgrounds, and pretend it's outside).

 

- Dragons will still be "on the way" and when they arrive they will be disappointing.

 

- Joffrey's cross bow will be a cash shop item.

What makes the series great is the depth and complexity of the relationship and dialogues between the characters. As well as the history of the entire world.

I see no way at all to reproduce that effect in the MMO scene and certainly not within an existing, established franchise.

 

What these two said pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter.

So no, I don't think it'd be such a good idea; since it would pretty much wind up as a shallow money grab that's missing all the things that made GoT great to begin with.

Telltales' GoT game will probably do a far better job at it than any MMO ever could (even if I'm not particularly happy about that company's lack of key remapping, which screws over everyone with an EU keyboard).

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

you cannot do justice to the IP with making an MMO, it's impossible

if you must make it a game type, an RTS (or a turn based strategy game) would be the best way to go

If it were done how would Clans/orgs/corps work. Would it be more of each faction is essentially a clan. No smaller corps ect. Or could essentially the clan system work lore wise like a commander in charge of his company/platoon/squad. Limited in size.

Have the posters wanting this actually read the books or even watched the TV show?

There is very LITTLE fighting. There are NO dungeons. There are NO Boss monsters, except maybe 3 dragons.

What happens in this IP is not physical combat, but intrigue, political maneuvering, and backstabbing using hired killers. THIS is what makes the IP great, not some action combat oriented video game many of you desire.

I get that you want to "play in Westeros." I'd love to, also. But think about what you're asking for. If they made a VIDEO GAME of this, would it BE Westeros as we know and love it? No. It would be Azeroth with a different skin.

This is the way most "Wouldn't <insert beloved IP here> be a great MMO?" posts go. What people love about any particular IP hardly ever translate well into an MMO setting. The best bets are IPs from video games already.

Let me ask, What do *you* wish to do in this IP?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

So who here is brave enough to detail how this game would be structured to make it a successful MMORPG? How many factions would there be, classes, politics, religion etc. What features would make it dynamic, complex and stand out from the other games on the market?

 

It's one thing to be a brilliant book/TV series, and another thing to turn it into a successful AAA game.

 

I love the series with all the plotting/back stabbing, intrigue, magic, characters and so on, but unless you can successfully add those systems into the game it will have a very different feel.

 

That said, If they could pull it off then I'd definately be playing it. I've always wanted to play a MMORPG where you could form or break alliances at will. With trade, travel and other aspects being affected by whose alligned with who, I can see some very interesting possibilities.

My dream game announcement would be a Dragonlance mmo... I mean come on... who doesnt want to play a kender.

If they did it right GoT would have the makings for a solid realm vs realm pvp game but chances are it would get screwed up.

Why? Because Game of Thrones, while I do enjoy the show, is nothing more than a male version of General Hospital and All My Children. It's a medieval soap opera...filled with conspiracy, deceit, sex, and treachery. MMOs aren't currently capable of this.

 

If it did want a shot, it would have to be a full blown SWG-like game, where players could create shops, erect full player cities with tax, conquer other player cities, etc etc etc...

They could always go the Swtor route.

nah .. GoT is about twist and turn in the story, not sandbox pvp.

I would much rather play a telltale GoT adv game .. wait .. they are making one.

Especially since there is a lot of context we are aware of, it makes such an MMO more immersive with sand box and the series/books.

It would work well if they focused on two parts, the economy and the pvp (combat, sieges, duels, player created content - mini games). The economy as in making it a virtual reality and complex system with hiring, buying businesses, spending money in different ways, caravns etc.

I would eagerly put some hours trying to understand the GoT's MMO in a sand box.

The negativity around here is palpable.  I agree with your assessment.  

Done decently, this would be a very fun game.

 

I don't see how the logistics would be any more difficult than normal.  Hell, they even have a script to pull from.  Translating it to a MMO setting versus just a SP RPG would be some work, but not near the "knightmare" some seem think.  

Just my opinion as a software engineer, not working in the gaming industry.  fwiwia.

Politics/map control based fantasy/medieval MMORPG have been done before. I won't mention names since the last time I did I got a warning from mods.



Thought not a sandbox, lineage 2 come s to mind. And they don't hand out warning here for mentioning games.

@OP, I doubt it could be done properly. So no.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

What a dumb idea.

Takes the richest and most multi layered story in recent times and totally ignores it for a zerg fest pvp game.

If any thing it needs to be a carefully crafted PVE only game.

Its already been tried but as many of the replies worried it would be a cheap ass tie in it was infact it was so bad they scrapped the mmo side and released it as a solo rpg which was also a piece of crap

The best time would for it to be set in the Age of Heroes, at the start of the Long Night when the White Walkers start to invade. There isn't much known about this era aside from the legendary heroes like Brandon the Builder, Lann the Clever, Garth Greenhand, the Storm King Durran and the Grey King.

Unfortunately two key elements that are synonymous with ASOIAF would be missing in this timeline:

1) The gods of the Andals.  In this time everyone worshiped the old religion of the children of the forest.  The 7 gods of the Andals are key in the story and the game would feel amiss without them.

2) The Targaryans.  These guys hadn't invaded yet, so you couldn't play as one.

 

To remedy the above you could set it later after the Targaryan invasion, but then you enter territory that is too well covered.  The invasion was basically won with dragons, there was no real war to fight at that point.

Maybe a MMO could exist in the timeframe after the books have finished, but we will be waiting a while for that.

 

That being said, the older setting would be a lot more interesting in a game context, as magic was still prevalent in the world back in those days which would open up more class options.

 The negativity around here is palpable.  I agree with your assessment.  

Done decently, this would be a very fun game.

I don't see how the logistics would be any more difficult than normal.  Hell, they even have a script to pull from.  Translating it to a MMO setting versus just a SP RPG would be some work, but not near the "knightmare" some seem think.  

Just my opinion as a software engineer, not working in the gaming industry.  fwiwia.

As per EVE it's intended to be mm-online, so replace NPC's with players and bob's your uncle.

Game Of Thrones, is as described a soap opera in Medieval times with the added bonus of showing how horrible life is with a dose of fantasy and magic to spice things up. It could work similarly if the devs effectively took an area and a sub-set of the world not part of the main events and timeline. Though how that intersects with the events timeline in the books remains a problem.
