Imagine WoW with a superior combat engine, a superior look and feel, a superior base UI and a superior ability to create content in a timely manner - and you have Wildstar.

The reason that WoW clones failed so hard wasn't just that they were WoW clones - but that they were inferior to the real thing. Of all the WoW "clones" I played GW2, Rift, SWTOR, FFXIV - only GW2 really did things that were much better then WoW. Because of Blizzard strong development staff its been very hard for these second rate development houses to knock WoW off its perch. The guys behind Rift and ffxiv for example just don't seem as talented as the guys behind WoW. FFXIV has tab targetting for example but it sucks. It has open zones - but they aren't particularly 'open'. It has stories but they aren't particularly funny or compelling. Like FFXIV Rifts graphics seem 'better' but their animations and sense of style is deficent.

WIldstar is an attempt to out Blizzard Blizzard. GW2 has some of this going for it. But I think Wildstar is a direct assualt on the WoW empire like we haven't seen since SWTOR. It essentialy takes all the best features of WoW and all the best features of modern MMOs (Tera, GW2) and tries to meld them together.

The idea is sound - and from what I have heard the execution is good as well. The idea that only WoW can kill WoW is based on this idea that gamers won't switch to a better game. They absolutely will - just like they did from EQ to WoW. Is Wildstar that game? Who knows. But I have faith in the idea that gamers will switch to superior products.

All of WoW's history adds almost nothing to the game because its set up in a way that destroys the value of their own content. People only run old raids, dungeons etc for the transmogs.

wow doesnt have action combat, say goodbye to 2/3 of the playerbase

raid oriented, and PVP focused too

im guessing at 300-400k subs long term

blizzard lose the same after a bad patch

The only way something will kill WoW is if someone makes a more refined generic mmo thats playable by everyone and anyone of any skillset and mindset. And that is unlikely to happen. So hopefully WoW will never die off, as while its still going developers have something to compare their products to and improve upon that broken formula of super easy themepark mmo.

Wildstar shouldnt be trying to beat WoW. Instead it should be looking to beat the whole genre as its stagnant and sinking. We need things that are rarely seen these days such as an accessible product that has lots of depth and end game challenge, a product thats well refined focusing more on polish rather than a glut of features, and things like humor and soul that most games totally lack.

Agreed,

But i think the true WoW killer will be wow itself, because they are already running out of new ideas, think about it, they f*cking used kunfu panda in the last expansion.

I think wildstar is great is because it use new stuff, the combat is better (i think, i haven't played it but it looks better than wow) because it's more reactive. I also like the paths, it really makes the game adjust to the player instead the player to the game. So wildstar is in my opion a bigger step forward in innovating the genre than games like rift and gw2

(It's combat is similar to gw2 but better because you have more skills where you can choose from and it also somekind of talent three thing (if i'm not mistaken) with more diversitie than rift or WoW) (again i think, still waiting for a beta key)

I have no doubt that WoW's worst enemy is WoW itself, and its endless push for storyline and generic appeal is its undoing. When I first read about Wildstar and its two factions landing on the planet, and the reason for them being there was sort of like "we have no idea why were here, or what were supposed to find, but here we go!", that put me off at first. I thought, wow, no story? Thats kinda cheap. And then a lightbulb went off and I thought to myself, brilliant! Because without this huge overarching storyline the devs are unshackling themselves from the burden of having to constantly follow their story and its pitfalls. Theyre free to do whatever they want, and with a mix of sci fi and fantasy they can literally do everything and anything. If its cool, hip and fun, in it goes! To quote the devs from 2012:

"The planet Nexus! This legendary world at the edge of known space was once inhabited by the Eldan - a technologically advanced race that mysteriously disappeared more than a thousand years ago. Now Nexus has been discovered, and players will travel across the stars to explore this wild frontier, fight for their new home, and reveal the planet's many secrets."

wow will never die because people who play wow are mostly 20+, who study or work, and they simply don't have the time to invest on starting a new mmo. you already know wow, you like it, why waste time trying to start a new game that could be better.

what?..they have been studying for 8 years?

no, wows success is depending on new players, they shed the entire playerbase every year

many players DO leave wow, but new ones replace them

over 40 mio accounts in 8 years

Looking at a large number of videos of Wildstar over the past week or so I don't really get the feeling that it brings anything new to the genre.

It looks pretty and it seems fairly smooth playing, although I imagine the combat system and dodging will be annoying playing with an sort of latency.

The questing design seems to be a real let down though.

WoW 2.0 eh? It's quests are still the old school kill x of y style quests with walls of text (disguised by hiding them in smaller block behind pseudo choice dialog options). WoW since Cata has significantly better and more interesting quests.

The world is still a field full of mobs standing around (or occasionally pathing along set paths). i.e. nothing new over what WoW and dozens of other games before and after it have provided.

Yes it has player housing, but that only really satisfies a small number of players and I'm not one of them.

So in the end what does Wildstar off that is new and exciting over WoW?  SWTOR had the voice acted questing + companions. TSW had investigations quests and the no class system. GW2 had your level scaling to the zones and WvW. Wildstar has?

Wildstar has what every new title brings to the genre when new games are announced, and that is hope. I hope this will be good but I'm afraid it will be the same thing that has been done before. I honestly don't see much different with it, but we may be surprised. /crosses fingers

I want an mmorpg where pvp matters, my enemies are not my race or class, and community matters.

I think this is less of a WoW clone and more of a WoW v2.0

They are doing what Blizzard did to EQ. And they may just beat them at their own game. I think Anet tried to beat WoW by going the polar opposite route. But Wildstar seems to have everything that a WoW fan enjoys, but better.

The storylines and characters are tounge in cheek and full of pop culture references, the raids seem bigger and badder, exploration is a career path.

I think WoW just may take its biggest subscription hit when this game launches. And I think Blizzard knows it.

From Korea to San Diego, we have a "WoW" killer about once every 6-8 months.  In reality, the only WoW killer that exists is whatever project Blizzard is working on at the moment.  Titan, anyone?

i love it how some people are saying, those that play SWTOR only play cuz they are star wars fans and will not leave because its not star wars.  LMFAO im glad you all make my decisions for me (yea right LOL)  I actually stopped playing SWTOR because im bored with it and im playing a certain game fulltime now that i can not say the name of because some people on this site will get pissy and give warnings out for mentioning LOL really even though some topics asked what games are you playing and cant even say due to that stupid reason.  Anway like i said i quit SWTOR but i also play STO because why, becuase i love it.  And until the 3 certain games comes out that im waiting for is:  The Repopulation, Wildstar, and The Elder Scrolls Online.

Anyone who calls WoW easy is a twat that did raid finder and said "oh wow this is easy."

When this whole thing called hard modes are in the game, and they are anything but easy.

WoW will kill itself, the lackluster reused content, has strangled it sense wotlk.

WoW's only hope is that Ghostcrawler left and some fresh eyes could revitalize the game.

I agree with OP.

This is wow with a few things changed and if they can keep up with the logins, charge a sub and make the mules work hard for their CREDD (f2p gamers are called "mules" as sub players are called "whales.")

The mules will be able to pay their subs with CREDD which is only another reason this really has the gonads to hit WoW hard.

Donkeys = Those who are broke and envy those who are able to purchase or buy anything in a game. Wants all games to become F2P eventually.

Whales = Those with spendable income who may support subscription games or buy into F2P cash shops.

My personal preference on the F2P vs SUB arena? SW:TOR. True segregation of freeloaders from everyone else. We need more of it.

haha believe me, I'm not saying it as a fan. In fact, this game hasn't really appealed to me as of yet. But looking at the design and systems of this game, it really does look like a sequel to WoW. And that may end up taking away a lot of subs.

I think it PROVES the lack of creativity in developers.Former Blizzard employees making a WOW look a like, not surprised.

Heavily marketed, again no surprise, marketing seems to create hype which creates a bandwagon effect, similar to what Wow did.

Imo the game is doing nothing i have not already seen,i would still and have chosen FFXIV over WS any day.I will still see the red carpet idea, but overall better graphics and really that is the ONLY thing that is separating games right now ,since they ALL play identical>>>chase quests>>>chase levels.

Even the zones look as cheap as the graphics which is a turn off for me.

When i first played Wow on release ,i actually thought no way in hell that game does anything,it looks too cheap,i was wrong,i think the same about WS now ,probably wrong again.I have followed forums and websites and i listen to what people say,i find the bandwagon effect is the biggest reason games succeed, not because they are good or better.

I promise I'm not being sarcastic asking this, but can someone explain to me why everyone compares this to WoW/Vanilla WoW?

It was more like GW2 than WoW to me...the only thing that reminded me of WoW was all the yellow exclamation marks and the cartoony style.

I feel I missed something.

Hmm, Carbine even acknowledges it looking like WoW.

Art director Matt Mocarski told xxxxxxxxxx that comparisons between Wildstar and World of Warcraft’s art styles are welcome.

“This is me being very sincere. In one part, and even when I think it’s meant as a jab, I actually find it flattering because WoW has been out for nine years now, right? And there’s still people playing it, and it’s still a beautiful game,” he said.

edit: I'm not sure if you met the game in it's entirety or the look.

Ah, I didn't know that about them welcoming the similar WoW art style. I thought everyone meant gameplay-wise it's like WoW. With all the AoE and button mashing it felt way more like GW2.

Nothing will touch WoW.  It came out at the right time, it had great gameplay mechanics for the time of its release and now it is a cultural icon.  Younger kids play it just because they hear about it so much on TV and in conversations.  Blizzard still has its incredible number of subbers for lots of reasons:

1. Many people have max level toons and enjoy the raid content

2. So many people have played and have so many friends from the game that they don't want to leave

3. For many people, it was their first MMO and holds a lot of sentimental value

4. Young kids jump in so they can be cool and figure out what the meme's are all about.  Who was Leroy Jenkins?

5. It has low PC system and internet connection requirements

I think Wildstar will sell around 2 million boxes but due to MMO saturation, the current generations tendency to get bored quick and other factors, I don't see it ever coming close to WoW and I would be surprised if it held on to 1.5 million subs 6 to 8 months after release.

The times have changed and like it or not, nothing will ever hit the WoW numbers until some game development house reaches down into their pants, grabs their manhood and develops an original game where people can build things, earn a reputation across the entire server and actually influence the gameworld.

'1. Many people have max level toons and enjoy the raid content"

You will be able to buy 90 level toons anytime you want in WoW.

"2. So many people have played and have so many friends from the game that they don't want to leave"

Most people played, made friends and left anyway. The group of people that played WoW is huge. I heard they have had 60 million or so former players. The people playing now (probably 6 million after next quarter - and half of them overseas) are a very small subset of that group.

"3. For many people, it was their first MMO and holds a lot of sentimental value"

People left EQ anyway..

"4. Young kids jump in so they can be cool and figure out what the meme's are all about. Who was Leroy Jenkins?"

You can watch a video.

"5. It has low PC system and internet connection requirements"

EQ had low requirements too. That didn't save it.

I think WildStar will keep the subs that it gets. They have done very very minor advertising, like allowing some press to stream, and that alone pushed WildStar from pretty much unknown, to being on the top of the Most Anticipated MMO's of 2014 list.

The game itself looks solid, has a good humor from what has been streamed, and the combat takes more skill than other games.

The only other game out there that catches my eye is that Pantheon game, which I honestly think is what Everquest Next was supposed to be before they scrapped it, and then they bought it from SOE and are finishing it.
