I agree with your list, Chris, but I'd tone down the fear.

Shards are busy and Trion is rolling out new content regularly. Update 2.6 is scheduled for February and will have lots of new things including a completely new crafting profession, 15 new dimensions and stat buff items. Previous updates have brought out new chronicles, annual events with new items and itemization, old instances retuned for the level cap and a new water saga leading into the coming expansion.

I'd agree the faction grind is pretty tough in Storm Legion. But many of the grinds were alleviated with extra bonuses from crafting dailies. And the gear upgrades at the completion of the grind are pretty awesome.

I'm having fun in Rift and have gotten back to raiding (now probably too much at 3x per week). Raiding has taken precious time away from my favorite pastime - building Dimensions. So while I agree that Rift can always use positive PR shining a light on all the great things about the game, I'm feeling pretty good about how things are right now. Especially since the F2P conversion went extremely well and Rift's model is widely seen as the preferred F2p hybrid model around.

It is suggestions like updating the characters that really makes the MMO community suck. You are not gaining anything by updating the character graphics. Are you going to sit around and look at your character for hours?

There are enough dungeons, enough raids.

What Rift needs are new forms of activity.

It has gone F2P. Don't expect great updates anymore. I have seen this before with Lotro. Just accept the fact that you can play for free and enjoy whats there, because that will be as good as it will get.

I can't play for free. Apparently forgetting the password to my account means I have to remember things that are even harder to remember than the password, some of which are impossible for me to have. So I won't be playing this I don't think, even if I did get a sudden urge to play.

Contact support.  I have dealt with them pre-online chat only (via phone) and after just recently and they are level headed and understand.  i needed help with secret word for an account I made for my wife 2 years ago that my son was using since I knew the email associated, but needed help with the rest and it took all of five minutes.

They did the same thing for me. I don't even remember setting security questions in the very beginning but they were able to help me. This was over a year ago, though.

The biggest killer for me was when they did away with the faction division. They did this because the population was so low it was the only way you could get much done in the game, but after they merged even guilds it became a game I no longer wished to play. For me the top thing they need to fix is the faction division. MAYBE even add a 3rd faction and make the gameplay and combat more interesting.

I agree with you that some new animations would be welcome but they don't really bother me personally. What I have to disagree on is that the removal of faction barriers was a forced move due to low population. I was very active at that point and while a lot of people had left and were commenting on MMO sites about how "dead" it was, the actual servers were very active with a lot going on, even during off hours. I shouldn't say all -- I played on Faeblight and there was far from a problem. I interpreted that change as an accessibility move to let friends play together without needing to re-level.

So the article wants Rift to go back to the quick theme park ride to max.. JUST so you can do the dungeon/raid hamster wheel grind forever for better gear?  Been there, done that and will never play that way again..  Why buy a game where 90% of it obsolete once you hit max level?  That is just crazy in my opinion..

I would favorite your comment if I could. My intention isn't to fear monger by any means. RIFT had a kind of fall from grace and I would love to see it climb back up to its rightful pace, is all.

I doubt that any of what's pointed out in the article will hit the game in 2014. Trion had this "aggressive" (which i find is a totally ridiculous term to use in this context) updates and it still wasn't enough. Despite the quantity of stuff Trion threw at the players, the game kept missing the "it" for many and hence went from a sub game to F2P to dead.

Several rounds of lay offs, the EoN and Defiance desaster, closing of a studio, server merges over and over, performance still crap (and they'll NEVER gonna fix it, they just dont have what it takes) ....Rift paying the bills for EVERYTHING until it went F2P...and now lockboxes are supposed to pay for everything = Trion isn't the same company anymore.

They couldn't lift Rift up to it's huge potential when the grass was still green, they are never going to do it in the state the company is in now. Just look at them clinging to crap as Trove, which's simple concept they even had to steal big time as their next blockbuster, pathetic. At this rate they will produce browser games in 2015.

Rift could have been it, too bad that Trion just wasn't able to. Their PR just fooled everyone.

I see find it being the opposite. If you go to other sites such as MMOhuts there hardly is any hype on Rift. Most hype for any f2p is for overrated games like Tera simply because the combat is different. (Great but different) I see people talking about how great Rift, but most of the time (Even IN GAME) you hear people CONSTANTLY comparing it to WoW, which makes everyone think of it as a watered down WoW. A lot of sites or youtube pages that have their "Top 10 f2p mmorpgs" tend to ignore Rift.

I want a new CONQUEST area.  Twist it up a little.  Lag is horrible, but it's still fun.

I wasn't there for the days of subs, but I know they are making a mint on how they have things now.  Sub or no sub means jack.

They need to do better on customer service.  They do  treat non-subs substandard, but when u start spending in the cash shop to support the game, then they need to change that attitude.

DON'T make it so you lvl to end game in a flash.  OMG!  Didn't we hear enough of that grip with WOW.  Vote to /gkick Chris if he ever says such a stupid thing again.  Let's get to end game so we can grind the same S##T every day for months.  Rep/gear grind anybody.  Exploration, lore, and pvp should make the game.  NOT end game content.

Rift does have a perception problem - Rift's supporters tend to think its this amazing game that is unfairly underplayed/underrated.  Of course this applies to every game's supporters (Vanguard is another obvious example).

Rift has its loyal fans but they need to accept that most people don't like Rift, or don't find it more than a month or two diversion.  Its a shallow world, with shallow combat despite all its choice, and poor immersion.

That doesn't mean its a bad game, its just one with limited appeal.

I think the time on this type of game has passed. I liked RIFT at release, I played for 10 months. That being said, I bought the SL expansion, logged in once, and played for about 8 minutes. I never logged in again. Same old same all over again. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of it, but I just couldn't stomach it.

I asked for a refund 2 weeks later, and to my surprise, they wouldn't give me one. I thought for sure Trion would look out for one of there founding players. Needless to say, I have not felt the same about Trion since.

I agree with all points but second. It's leveling of vanilla Rift that needed fixing - to make it longer. Currently it is as it should be. I also don't agree that it's not a problem with content. Quests are still dominated by bring this, use something else, kill that twenty times.

Also from my perspective there is another must do: bring OS X client;-)

Don't gkick me! I'm just saying, virtually everyone I know who no longer plays RIFT complains about how long the XP grind is in Storm Legion.

XP grind?? Any complaints I'm hearing are from the folks grinding Torvan rep. With XP vials available from the store or free to patrons, I've not heard anyone complain about XP in a long time.

But that's the problem, you need XP vials to make the grind bearable. They should not turn to purchasables to overcome a design issue.

Too many power resets for me.   Too many logins with 'Choose your powers again' as the first thing to do.  After the second time in a row, it just wasn't in the cards.  I occasionally forget, update log in, and remember.   While they look like they've added some instant templates, it's still not tempting enough.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Played Rift from Day 1, had a great guild that conquered right through Hammerknell and onto the next tier of raiding ( Ca not remember name of that dungeon now) then F2P was announced and our guild disappeared over night. And my wife and I found things "Did" change and it was no longer the same. As many have said, dont expect much to change, its F2P now and unless they start making tons of money in the cash shop, not much is going to get done.

F2P models imo have ruined MMO gaming. I myself prefer a subscription model any day!!!

What XP Grind ?

1 Week after the SL release i was LvL60 and done with the first t1 10man raid. And that was way before F2P or some Xp nerfs for Sl or XP vials...

There is NO EXP grind, there is a huge amount of players with absolute no clue about the class(soul)/makro/skill system.

The biggest problem imo, Rift has since SL/F2P, is the amazing amount of brainless "Just give me 1 Button and 1 Way, or its all bad" players...

The Content Updates are still ontop with other games or even better, hotfixes every week (sure some bugs take longer, 4am if you know what i mean, but thats kinda the nature of games some time). We got a few new(1 revamped) Raids, new/revamped Dungeons, 1-2 man content, a toon of stuff for the really great housing, a new small lvl 60 zone on EI, ranked 5vs5 pvp,etc..

On top of that, there is a new CQ map, a new Housing/bufffood profession, new 3.0 Souls, and some other nice little stuff like performance improvments on the PTS.

TL;DR There is no exp grind if you know what you do, and Rift gets/got a lot of great things the last/next months..

PS;

There is one point that you can call a grind, the Reputationsystem, but still whats a mmoRPG, with no further carrot besides gear as soon as you hit lvl 60, and still i know toons of games where the grind in the end is way bigger...

They should also get rid of Daglar and his stupid Corsucating Ethereal Shards, too, while they're at it.

It's funny, I quit World of Warcraft because of the arrogance and outright hostility to the player base exhibited by Blizzard developers (Ghostcrawler chief among them), and then the free to play transition basically showed that Daglar was Ghostcrawler in all but name.

When required raid consumables, enchants, seals, and all sorts of items require the same item, of which you can only get enough marks weekly for two and the rest have to be bought on the cash shop or from other players (which just encourages buying REX for plat, which is basically the same thing), my impetus to play the game is gone.

I felt appreciated and welcomed by pre-Storm Legion Trion and Rift. I no longer feel appreciated, I just feel like a revenue source.

I hate to break the news, but you don't get much for FREE!!!! What is the matter with people?  I'm going to be playing the games that cost not the ones that are free!

We are continually faced by great opportunities brilliantly disguised as unsolvable problems.

PS;

There is one point that you can call a grind, the Reputationsystem, but still whats a mmoRPG, with no further carrot besides gear as soon as you hit lvl 60, and still i know toons of games where the grind in the end is way bigger...

The first person to post that I actually agree with. ^^ This person actually plays the game and knows how to play it. Getting from level 50-60 only takes about 15 to 30 hours depending on if you are using patron bonus or experience pots (low end if you are, high end if you are not). If it takes you longer than 30 hours you either don't know how to play, are a well rounded player, or got distracted by shinies (ie. not focused on leveling).
