I am still a bit of a noob at the game but for the short time that I have been playing I have enjoyed 99% of my time on the game and don't think that I will get bored of it anytime soon.

I wont play unless the price goes down.  I'm to burned out on mmo's to invest anything more than $20 in them.

Playing FFXIV-ARR NA:Faerie. Best FC's Mytical Mourning - Rhett or White Lotus - Lotus.

Yes, the game is a whole lot of fun, plus some.

PvP is dependent on WHAT KIND OF PvP you enjoy.

There's the ranked/unranked sPvP, which is not level-based, but skill-based.   There it's instanced maps with team scores based on point capture (although they are currently working on Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and a few other modes).

World vs. World vs. World is where true PvP is at.   Right now there's the 3 identical Borderland maps, the Jumping Puzzle map, and the Eternal Battlegrounds map; however they're currently guild testing the Mists map to add an additional location for that.  Besides being able to level 1-80 there, you'll also be gaining WvW Ranks too.  Those you can use to increase your siege weapon capabilities, supply usage, defenses/attacks against NPC guards, and so much more.  With the WvW Ranks, it's consistent progression because nobody has made it to the ultra high levels of ....I think it goes up to 2,000,...but I could be wrong.

Also, you can search around and try to find it cheaper than $50.  Best Buy has it for $40 and that took 10sec to Google.   Even check your local software stores that might have the box for cheap if possible.     However, it's still well worth the $50 full price if you pay that much.

This guy forgot to add..."for a month" after his claim that it is the best game out there. Soon as you hit max level on a character you will quickly discover why everyone left this game in droves.

Any evidence to back up your clearly biased, yet false claims? Because the last word of the developers is that the game was growing, not losing customer "in droves". Not once has the game, in it's 1.5 year run, has it had to merger servers; completely unlike nearly every other MMORPG that has launched in the past 4+years that all have had to merger away servers.

Evidence? You mean more evidence is needed then logging in to see empty zone upon empty zone?  Oh right, I forgot you are one of those people who take Anet at their word when they put "heavy" by the server name. Carry on then. I don't want to be the one to tell you there is no Santa Claus.

Any fool can know. The point is to understand.

Fun is obviously subjective so while I had fun leveling I had less fun during end game.

Content wise it is probably the best bang for your buck. Their event schedule is incredible for something without subs.

Ultimately the experience GW2 left me with was the hatred of traditional quest systems. I tried so hard to play a quest MMO afterwards and was just disappointed regardless of how fun the combat or systems were (Dragons Prophet). I'm not going to say I can't ever play a quest mmo again but I certainly expect games to feel more....alive like GW2.

One example is the newest Star Trek Online zone in the dyson sphere. It is a place with a sort of "events happen in this zone" kinda thing going on and I enjoy it.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

You are being somewhat hypocritical here. You are chiding him for his evidence comment and yet you have none yourself. His is basically an opinion and so is yours. However, he does have a good point that there hasn't been a single server shut down and that is very unheard of with other newly released AAA games in the past.

I just played a few hours today and found more than enough people having fun. I'm not sure what the "heavy" comment means, I never even see it because I login to play and not to worry about who isn't.

its worth every penny. They do sometimes discounts, and i think they offer free trial (i think) but still its worth it. If you can get a free trial and give it a go for yourself its even better to decide. Droping any games just because a couple of haters tell you to do so only affects you. Only YOU know what you want and what you like. The game isnt perfect, no mmorpg is.... but its worth every penny compared to everything else out there post WoW.

i have put in more than 2500 hours into the game with 5 max level toons. id hope im appropriately qualified to provide you with a few of my opinions re gw2.

- best game ever? no. best value mmo in the market? yes. best mmo in the market right now? debatable.

- you may find lvling a bit different from other typical mmo at first. later you will find its actually similar but with a different skin. nothing wrong here, the presentation is nice.

- solo lvling in gw2 can get boring fast. get a grp of friends and the experience will be much much better.

- world is quite large in size. however, waypoint travel makes it feel rly small. its a beautiful world though.

- crafting is ok. though once you know whats going on. you can max lvl a craft in 5 mins and gain 10 lvls off it.

- dungeons, like the most part of the world, are beautiful. they are however not very challenging.

- end game pve is lacking. fotm grind. boring as hell. much improvements can be done here.

- pre release anet advertised on horizontal progression (i played since BWE1, all stress tests etc). this is not entirely true. it can take a long time to farm top grade items. ascended. legendary. very grindy otherwise ppl just buy gold.

- iirc anet now limit ascended weapon/armor key mat to once per day (20 hours or smthing?). I dont like this. gated access to getting better gears. anet want players to slow down eating up contents but chose a rather slack option.

- structured pvp is fine. not great but good. is fun for a while. now more maps are added there is a good variety.

- wvw is fun. but need to get into a properly organized guild to fully enjoy. get on ts, make friends etc. mind theres no reward for winning except bragging right. some are ok with this, others arent.

- story is not that immersive. eventhough i read 2/3 novels they released. ghost of ascalon. edge of destiny. despite many dragons & undeads (risens lol) they world never rly felt like they were in true danger.

- addition contents after release have been below par imo. living stories, jumping puzzles (these are fun at first though), super adventure box etc. these are very gimmicky. add no real substance into the game. perhaps this is the nature of no sub fee. the game is good, additional contents are not.

- forgot to talk about class (profession) & combat. its a bit twitchy (good or bad is up to preference here) i think its fine although didnt like dodging = immune to dmg. no holy trinity, lack in identity. abilities overall are not diversed. some abilities are not even touched. few professions are better designed than the others i.e. guardian, mesmer. my opinion ofc)

above are about as many flaws as i can tell you about gw2 i think. figure itd be more useful to you telling the bads rather than the goods. this will help with your judgement.

tldr: its fun. more so with friends. considering its no sub fee. its worth every penny. good good game.

Is GW2 worth it, in a word 'no'.

Here is why:-

  • The overwhelming problem is that they tried to streamline every previous mmo and in the process cut away a lot of meat with the fat.
  • The hearts or 'dynamic (aka very static)' events' are '!' by another name.  There is simply no difference between them, it is just sales speak.  But worse, because you do not need to visit a hub or talk to an npc they seem and are entirely trivial.
  • The map is like tetris, a bunch of rectangles pressed together like lego, it looks horrible and feels horrible, and it is heavily instanced.
  • They try to replace content with jumping puzzles and other mini-games for morons.  It feels like trying to insert the triangular block through the triangle hole on Rainbow.
  • The central story is amateurish in the extreme.
  • The apparently constantly updated living story is a poor substitute for longer term real content.  It forces you to play it at the dev's timescale, rather than your own, which is a cardinal sin.  When the hell did a dev tell me when I am allowed to have free time?
  • There are fast travel points everywhere, and I mean you cannot walk two metres without reaching one which removes you entirelt from any sense of immersion.
  • There is no need to socialise at all.  You auto join people for the few fleeting moments it takes to complete a quest then discard them like a used tissue.
  • The limited toolbar, choice of skills, elite skill hunting, and the WVW that resulted from this in GW1 has been removed in its entirety.  In its place someone has crapped on their keyboard.
  • It is basically the GW module of Sims.
that is my summation of the game.

I could go through and pick all those points apart but there is one that always irritates me most. The one about travel points. If you don't like so many travel points simply don't use them. If there weren't travel points other players would complain that there weren't enough. It's a no win situation. The rest are easily just as terrible for saying "no" to. This is a game that is the same price as SP PC or console game but with hundreds of hours of play time. It has won numerous awards and is most definitely a yes imho. Sorry I disagree with yours.

To say 'don't use a fundamental design criteria in a game' is absurd in the extreme.  Perhaps I should play games with one hand tied behind my back to make it harder?

Ridiculous.

I'm not sure why you think it would be ridiculous "not" to use something if you don't like it. Many of my guild friends don't craft and yet it is a big part of the game. /shrug

Nonetheless, you are a minority with your answer to the OP in this thread.

People applauded GW2 for experimenting; I think every game in production since indicates the experiment failed.

Do you really believe that?

Yes.  Simple question, simple answer.

So, you're saying that the design of GW2 has been a failure and the proof you offer is that games in production following the release of GW2 are not following suit. That's... special.

I played this game since the beta and still love it. I have 4 accounts with a total of ... 22 80s :). For some people they want to rush to max level so they can enjoy the game, well, that's not how you do it, not in GW2 nor in any other game. I really did take my time while playing this game. I enjoy every moment in the game and especially the story. Some find the story is boring, i myself really like the story, it is one of the reason why i have 22 80s, Each race has its own story and base on you, the story will then vary by your choice, Yes, the game gives you different choices when you play the story and each own individual choice you make has its own consequence that will lead you to other choices. No grinding needed, you want to pvp? just head to spvp and the game will give you everything you need to customize your character, this is where your actual skill come in to play, this is not like the bull crap that En Masse claimed for Tera (does not matter how skilled you are, if you have no pvp item? you are fked !). Like zerging? go to WvWvW, though i will be honest that the WvWvW in GW2 is while boring most of the time, it really excited on the reset day because this is when the big guilds actually fight in an organize group and has some strategies, but after that, mostly just mindless zergs that has no idea what the hell they doing. So if you like WvW, join a guild that focus on WvW, you will have a lot of fun, have you ever seen a group of 10 people beat the shiet out of a group with 30 people?. If you like doing instances, GW2 will fits your need. At lvl 80, you have a total of 9 instances, within each of those, your group will get to chose the path they want to do, each instance contain at least 3 path to choose from, give you at least 27 instances to do each day. One thing about the instances is that they are while repetitive, you will use the same method over and over again everytime you do it, this offer no challenges at all, how ever, Anet lately has been release some instances that actually require skill and team work to beat it, i look forward for more. Overall, GW2 is a decent game, it fit hardcore and softcore play style. If you are a student and have to work like me, GW2 is the game for you.

The game did lose a lot of players after launch. That is the reason they went to the two week release schedule for the Living Story. They had evidence that it was bringing some people back. They then stated that the game was growing "slowly but steadily."

GW2 direction is losing a lot of players. This living story that changes the world month to month and then is replaced the next month never to see that new content again, has left many players wanting. New zones that come from living story feel disjointed and useless when its over. Really all you can do is farm mats. Stop playing for a few months to come back to nothing new because the content you missed is gone forever.

Also the living story content is very flaky. It has no depth or substance. When you play it you have to ask why? Its poorly written as well and thats the saddest part.

Also the combat is fun for the first bit but becomes a pain when you team long term. Everything end game is a zerg, PvP, Dungeons and open world PvE. Very low on tactics are needed as its mostly about numbers. In the end you start feeling like you are playing wack a mole. Follow the zerg and hit red things.

IMO this game is worth playing alone as this is the only time you get to really enjoy the game. Story is good before living story. Combat solo takes timing and reflexes. Great single player action game.

I want to echo this for the most part, as I agree.  My credentials for my opinion: I just cracked 1400 hours played.  5 max level 80 characters (Thief, Mesmer, Guardian, Warrior, Necromancer), with a lvl 70 Ele and 35 engi.  I have played all CBTs, early access and have played since launch.

A lot of focus in the last 6-8 months has been the living story, which has increased its cadence to 2 week updates which are shallow, fluffy, non substantial, repetitive, achievement grinding, materials grinding, zerg inducing and coma inducing.  This is why I have been in and out of the game for the last 6-8 months.  I play for 1-2 months, stop for a month...so on and so forth.

Nanfoodles comment about combat is about right.  Playing on your own is where you can really feel the skill based combat.  But since a lot of the content updates promote zergs(blobs of players), you can simply auto attack and get full credit.  And arenanet hardly seems like they are backing down from this.

The game is definately worth box price, and you an simply play it alone with the ocassional passer-by helping you out with dynamic events.  WvW is the saving grace for this game.  Server vs server vs Server in enormous(the sizes of a zone or two) with keeps, sieges, etc.  I never played DAOC so I won't say it is better than that, but WvW is way better pvpve content than anything currently out there or coming out (probably even better than ESO 3 faction PvP).

Endgame: You will be doing a lot of zerging around with blobs of players killing the same Champions, World Bosses, Temple Bosses, running a lot of dungeons.  Or, you will be spending your time in WvW which is probably the most dynamic changing gameplay experience in the game.  Or you will spend your time in sPvP where levels do not matter, everyone is on equal playing field regardless if you have played 1 minute or 1000 hours.  Those are pretty much the 3 things you will be doing...For me, other than WvW...there just isn't enough to test my 'meddle' (gear and skill) PVE wise...

Overall:  The game is worth it, depending what you want to get out of it.  I think I've drained every ounce of energy I have for the game...and only this week I have kind of stopped.  I have been playing Warframe, awaiting TESO/Wildstar...might fire up skyrim.  I think GW2 is done for me, but it was a fantastic 1400 hours/16 months.  I simply disagree with the direction of the game in many facets, but that doesn't mean its a bad game.  In terms of popularity, gameplay, stability, population... it is probably next best MMO on the market to WoW.

One addition which I felt deserved its own post rather than adding to my wall of text above...

There was a poster(I wont name names) who said GW2 is probably the worst game he has ever played, not just MMOs.  Please completely ignore this person.  I can direct you to a myriad of kickstarter, small/medium/large budget games MMOs and non MMOs that are simply BAD.  GW2 is a quasi well through concept and launched with enormous potential and hope to be a genre changing game.  And for three months, it was just that.   Lately, the direction has shifted and I simply can't stand by it anymore.

Its a solid MMO, probably the most solid MMO on the market next to WoW.

The people that blindly say "OMG THIS IS SO BAD THE WORST GAME EVAR"...ignore them.  The game is good, but has many many flaws that are not due to the GAME itself, but the direction and guiding hand of Arenanet.

Remember the blisters you'd get in the palm of your hand from the corner of that joystick?

But for Guild Wars, it's more of a playstyle that I feel like I'll enjoy because it seems really fun, but on the other hand I hear lots of people don't like it overall and it's way too easy.

Anyone who owns this game can tell me is it honestly worth the $50 and is it actually fun?

Thanks

It was worth it.

Recently started playing SWTOR. I am posting updates to my experience in this thread:

I no longer play but GW2 and TSW are both worth it and eventually when I get the mood I intend to play them again.

I like it and so does my GF.

If you want to like MMORPGs but feel that it is like watching the game play itself, GW2 might be for you.

Currently playing: GW2
Cooperative (semi cooperative)board games you should check: Pandemic, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Eldritch Horror, Descent 2.0,Level 7 Omega Protocol, Last Night on Earth

Originally posted by ASVP Thanks guys but one more question   At the end, would be playing PvP with your level 80 is something fun or just to pass time because there isn't really anything to do
Yes, the game is a whole lot of fun, plus some.

The game did lose a lot of players after launch. That is the reason they went to the two week release schedule for the Living Story. They had evidence that it was bringing some people back. They then stated that the game was growing "slowly but steadily."

Actually, Living Story was announced in October 2012.

The growth of players they talked about was around January 2013.

The 2 week Living Story release was around April 2013 or something like that, after the players complaining 1 month was too long to wait tof the new Living Story. Then they complained 2 weeks was too fast.

The "Real Game" begins at character creation.

Ridiculous.

Wait a minute...

You're complaining that there are too many waypoints (in the most hyperbolic way I can imagine... 'every 2 meters'? Really?).

Someone suggests "then don't use them" - a 100% logical response/solution to your "problem".

You come back and tell them it's 'absurd in the extreme' to suggest not using something that you're bitching about the existence of?

You realize it's completely optional to use those? You are free to use waypoints as often or seldom as you wish. You can use them to get everywhere, you can use them only to travel across zones or into other zones. You can choose not to use them at all. It's 100% your choice.

You seem confused. What, exactly, is  your problem? Do you even know? Are you just complaining for the sake of complaining here?

My philosophy on MMORPGs:

Leveling is what happens while you're playing the rest of the game.

Don't worry about levels. Just play.
