OP  1/01/14 7:41:19 AM#1

It is pretty obvious that there is lot of nostalgia in this forum, there are many lost players that live in the name of the good old times when MMORPGs were more social, more challenging and more rewarding, me being one of the worst offenders.

Most of the younger players do not understand this nostalgia and I don't blame them.

If they were to play the games we used to play they would probably go "WTF?!", those games are light years away from modern MMOs in so many ways.

So when people ask me "If you like EQ so much why you don't go and play it?", I say that's a reasonable question to ask.

Fact is that there are different reasons why I don't play them anymore, some reasons are because they didn't evolve enough, some others because they changed too much.

So I will explain the reasons why I quit my favorite MMOs and why I am not going back.

EQ

Quit: Because EQ2 came out, which I played on/off for almost 4 years

Why I won't go back: Because the UI is so ancient and after getting used to modern MMOs I just don't have the patience to fight the UI anymore, also the graphics is way too old. I am not a graphics whore but there is a limit.

Basically there is nothing wrong with EQ gameplay, it is still the best MMO for me, but taking ages to perform the most simple task and outdated graphics prevents me to get into the game again.

EQ2

Quit: Because of the RoK expansion (Thanks Scott Hartsman AKA Mr Rift) when the game officially became WoW 1.5. I liked Vanilla EQ2 but with the introduction of Quest Hubs it took away all the charm of the game.

Why I won't be back: Because at the moment the only content I want to play is End Game Raidinig, which is still the best of the bunch. But I won't pay $15 a month plus $40 for the expansion for the privilege, since I will only play roughly the 10% of the game.

WoW

Quit: Because of the Community and the Burning Crusade expansion making the game less challenging (I loved Vanilla version, just perfect)

Why I won't be back: Still because of the community. And I am not talking about the Barren chat language, but the way people became so Elitist that now when you try to group either for a Dungeon or a Raid if you haven't got the best Gear Score you won't be invited or you'll be kicked from the group as soon as you join without even the time to say "Hi"

What really annoys me the most is that players with high Gear Scores are actually terrible players and cause more wipes than good players with average GS.

Having to play with lots of Leroy Jenkins with high GS is not my cup of tea.

Darkfall

Quit: Lack of PvP flagging System, very little chance to PvE efficiently.

Why I won't be back: Same reason really. The game is gorgeous IMO but it desperately needs a flagging System like EVE.

There is no way you can play any PvE efficiently at the moment unless you are escorted by 10 guild mates.

So what are the reason why you quit your favorite MMO and why you won't go back?

Ahh yes, "Hypers." The people who praise and hate every MMORPG... We've dismissed that claim.

1.
Tibia: Had a lot of flaws. But had a well established community that mattered.

Quit: I upgraded my computer and was able to play some thing better.

Why I won't go back: Old issues are still there and many changes have occurred that I couldn't keep up with.

2.
Rappelz: Awful. Just awful. Typical Korean grinder where I met some great people at.

Quit: Grinding mobs got boring.

Why I won't go back: It's pretty obvious.

3.
WoW: I have nothing to bad to say about WoW as a game.

Quit: Poor customer service handling with an in-game issue.

Why I won't go back: Poor account security. Not once. But twice. My accounts got "hacked" when I stopped playing (paying a sub) for a year. One being a EU account and the final straw being my US account. The same thing occurred to guild mates when they went inactive. Never have been "hacked" in any other MMO I've played.
Sure Blizzard restores your items. But I'm not going to pay a sub to collect it from my in-game mail box when the problem is clearly on their end.

That's pretty much my list. I have quit many other MMOs before. But there is a chance I may return to them for one reason or another. SWTOR after introducing its new Galatic Starfighter game play for example.

Simple for me - I quit because the game stopped being fun or I fundamentally disliked the game to begin with.

Games I never went back to usually fall in the latter category (example Warhammer online - I honestly hated every aspect other than PvP)

Sometimes games just change so much overtime that going back feels like a different game which I don't like (example WoW - I enjoyed vanilla, the current state of the game has zero appeal to me).

Sometimes games don't add enough new content thus making it pointless to come back (example FF14ARR - 2.1 has no appeal as I was at bcob turn 5 before the first month sub ended)

Sometimes endgame has zero appeal to me - example GW2

I quit EQ2 because SOE is a big turn off right now, cash shop is a 100% no for me,i made a stance to not support it.Anything Founder's packs or kickstarter is also a big turn off.

I quit Vanguard simply because there was not enough players, same reason for AOC.However i recently went back to AOC and unless my eyes went bad seems they really turned the graphics down badly.it actually looks borderline bad.

I stopped FFXI but have a few times for various reasons.I would not say i would never go back but most likely not as i might finally make a move to FFXIV or Archeage or both. Also i don't liek the direction Square has gone with their ideals on game design, matter of fact, don't like it at all,so i might choose AA over FFXIV.

I do however feel like i got kicked in the face when Square changed FFXI so badly and SOE went all out cash shop, then the one game  i had high hopes for is being run by Trion a dev i don't have a lot of confidence in.

SWG Publish 4 Jedi:Flurry: TKM unlock

1/01/14 8:08:12 AM#5

Runescape: Because I graduated middle school.

Won't be back because it's too dated and just about everyone playing it now wasn't even conceived yet back when I played it.

SWG: SOE/LucasArts ruined it.

Won't be back because it was ruined + shut down.

WoW: Because I became bored of it, and it's existence laid the blueprint for SWG's demise.

Won't  be back because it's overly casual/easy on top of boring.

SWTOR: Re-skinned WoW

Won't be back because it got boring, and it was the final nail in SWG's coffin.

Aion: Endgame grind

Won't be back because of endgame grind.

Age of Wushu: Because of a game breaking progression bug

Won't be back because the playerbase is almost completely gone.

EVE: I wasn't allowed to love this game. The griefers c*ckblocked my progression around every asteroid.

Planetside: I was so good at troll-killing that I was kicked from my favorite outfit due to complaints of hacking.

UO - I quit because they made it damn near impossible to reactivate or recover old accounts due to a rapid change of login systems (UO, Pogo, EA Store, Origin). I won't go back because I gave up on navigating their unnecessary padding of log in system.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

WOW - loved vanilla, hate what it has turned into.  Quit at 70.

Rift- all got very samey after a while and I don't enjoy end-game gear grinds.

DDO- felt that I had completed it/ experienced all it had to offer.

AoC- simply got bored.

GW1- probably my longest on and off game, but then GW2 came out and the population crashed.

There aren't many other games out there that have lasted me more than one or two months- so for all of those (and there are a lot) I simply didn't like them that much.

Runescape

Left and went back twice because sometimes grinding is familiar and doing it is mindless with predictable results of a goal of +1. Finally left because grinding became less fun to me personally. I started looking for more things I haven't seen that aren't predictable.

WOW

Left and didn't go back because of their development focus punishing hybrids while praising their hybrid play in marketing. See no leather gear for Druids not melee related and totems for Shaman. Secondarily raiding was a second job along with dailies.

Ryzom

Left once when the game went bankrupt. Left the second time because I didn't have time to play any game, too much work on my plate.

Wurm

Left and didn't go back because they blamed a security issue on a programming language. Could no longer trust their ability to secure data if the root cause isn't based on honesty.

Warhammer

Left because of being harassed by other players for being hybrid. Couldn't keep enough people on ignore to play the game without constant annoyances because they used alts to whisper constantly too. Three guilds made it a mission to chase me around and bitch and moan when we got grouped randomly along with sending me constant whisper messages until I couldn't read regular chat. I spent more time micro-managing ignore because it would only hold about 100 players than playing until it became a hindrance. Thought of returning years later, game was closing by then.

Haven and Hearth

Left because open world PVP doesn't belong in a crafting game because the risk is too high while the reward is constant so that was a lesson. A game that needs to be reliant on people not being abusive is bad game design I believe now because there are too many angry people in the world to expect them to be nice, just because.

Rift

Left and didn't go back because people barely participated in the spawned events and it was more of a raiding game. Was in a good enough guild and had purples and highest level raid gear but wasn't enjoying it. It was a reminder of my old WOW days and scheduled times that my guild expected me to login. It was a second job. Wouldn't return because it's now free to play even if the invasions were more participated in because the dailies were also a job.

GW2

Left because they sold the game on no linear gear progression and lack of dungeon running nonstop then introduced it about 3 months into the game. For all the talk of PVP being their endgame, they neglected WvWvW. Would not return, that was my test of buy to play and found it the same as free to play. Both had a cash shop at the forefront instead of the gameplay.

LOTRO

Left because the game changed to free to play after they lied and said they wouldn't go free to play. Instead of a planned content update, the game update was changing to free to play.

Vanguard

Left because the game changed to free to play.

@ All mmos

Community is broken. We have now the community of fps. The only way is to play with rl friends.

There are a so many good single player games out there, if you have the money you don't need mmos.

Step in the arena and break the wall down

Great thread!

EQ

Quit: Got tired of waiting around to find a group for hours on end. I wasn't in a raiding guild and no raiding guild would take me in because my gear sucked. Kinda of a catch 22. SWG came out so I went to play that.

Why I won't go back: See above plus my server seems pretty dead atm.Been thinking of playing Project 99 but not very easy to get going.

SWG

Quit: EQ2 came out. I left before the NGE dropped. I pretty much played the whole game so I was kinda bored towards the end.

Why I won't go back: NGE ruined my character I had worked so hard to build up. Then of course they shut it down. However! I do still play SWG but we can't talk about that here.

EQ2

Quit: Playing the same game for 4 years gets a bit repetitve. Lots of cool looking MMOs were coming out that year and so began my content lotcus phase jumping from one game to another, never staying longer than 6 months per game.

Why I won't go back: Terrible graphics engine gives me rage. To advance my toons from where they are now would require too much of a time investment. Plus I just feel lost whenever I boot it up.

Because some are not even good games? Because every piece of entertainment product becomes boring sooner or later? Case in point:

UO - horrible griefing .. quit at beta

EQ - horrible camping, too much down-time, quit after a year

WoW - getting boring after a few years. Expansion feels the same.

assorted other MMOs - fun for a while ... they last no worse than most SP games though.

Some games, like STO, is fun to go back once and a while though.

UO - Originally from the non-stop rubber band lag, when they introduced the extra land mass (went to EQ).  2nd time - Alternate way to play, not enough population and had a new mmo I was playing.  3rd time - Didn't like the new skill system setup among some of the other things they did with crafting, had some hope of an official classic server when I was playing, but they squashed it.

EQ - Played like a week after start I think, and stayed till DAoC came out.  Came back after playing DAoC for a little over a year.  Played again till some expansion like OoW or something and got fed up with the instancing, ran some mission for some SK to get boots like 40-50 times and my wife probably did it 90-100 times...Hate for instances grew during that stretch, would much rather camp or do a dungeon than do instances personally.  Thought of going back now that I am a little more accepting of instances.

DAoC - Left a little after a year, got tired of the non-stop nerfs and changes, even a year into release. Was more, but that was probably the biggest.  Best RvR fun I have ever had though.  Played it a ton.

SWG - Left after the NGE, but the CU was even the start, wife played a medic and they took the crafting away from her and she pretty much lost interest in the game then.  I started the game late, as I am not a big sci-fi mmo person and I did a ton of harvesting work to get our crafters fully stocked and get our skills up for doing stuff with people.  So the CU/NGE hits and they changed all the materials and items stats that I already had, making a lot of it junk, put that with the wife already not being into it anymore, and the loss of skill trees and other things...The dumbed down stuff wasn't for us anymore.

VG - Started on the team PvP server, then it was merged with the FFA PvP server, then they seemed to have trouble not breaking PvE or PvP when they did fixes for one side or the other, so they decided that they were not going to work on PvP anymore, until they had PvE working right....Which meant never pretty much.  PvP people left (right before AoC, so they all thought it would be what they wanted) and it became a ghost town on the PvP server.  We could transfer, but it seemed like missing part of the game to do so.  SoE also kept saying they were going to do a relaunch and support just kept getting less and less, so I figured no point in spending time in a mmo that it looks like SoE is abandoning.

Think that's my main stuff, obviously it was much more, but that's enough typing as it is.

Aion,  I can legitimately say I put more than 1000 hours of game time into this game. I guess that would justify it being my favorite. I would never go back to it because it defines the term "Asian Grinder" I am at the point where I can literally play for 8 hrs straight and barely get 1/16 of the way to my next level. I just don't have the time or the patience for that type of game anymore. I could understand putting up with grinds in MMORPG's, hell, that's pretty much what the genre is. However, it should still be entertaining when doing so. If I wanted to do chores for 8 hours my house is plenty big enough.

1. Guild Wars 1

Why it was my favorite.

I remember looking through an edition of EGM and saw it talked about there. I was intrigued by the artstyle and the fact I didn't have to pay a monthly fee. I got into beta and it was love at first sight. The skills, the artstyle, everything about it was awesome to me. It wouldn't be long before I found a group that I loved playing with, and whose friendship I enjoy to this day.

Why I quit.

I played the game for over 2000 hours, beat the campaigns several times over, and had experienced all that I could. My friends moved on from that game and I had little reason to stick around. I'd occassionally pop in to get achievements for HOM.

Why I won't comeback.

There's no new content. I was pretty heartbroken when they announced the end of the development. There were so many stories left unfinished, I wish they would have kept on with the game. Guild Wars 2 is a great game, despite its fault, but it'll never have the magic of the first one.

2. Lord of the Rings Online

Why it was my favorite.

It was Middle Earth. I could explore my favorite fantasy world. The story of the game was fantastic, I loved being able to see Rivendell, and genuinely enjoyed the world and its content. I also find a nice guild in the game that made it worth sticking around. I loved my Elven house, the bands in the game, the Prancing Pony Inn, even the occasional excursion to Hobbiton. I enjoyed it because I could roleplay.

Why I quit.

The final straw was the free to play implementation. I felt really burned by how they wanted to charge for the SOA content again, I felt burned by the overall way Turbine handled it. The immersion that was there was gone with all of the BUY THIS TO CONTINUE crap that kept happening. I didn't feel the game was starved for money, and I didn't appreciate them switching because they had success with DDO's f2p. It was a lot like watching a wholesome girl slowly descend into becoming trashy.

Why I won't comeback.

The aging systems and the f2p ruined the love I had for that game.

I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident.

Taking a game that I like... changing it into a game that I don't like.

I know, I know,  I'm not in the target demographics.  I figured that out a while ago.

Good responses, though this is not just a normal "why you quit x game".

Basically this thread gives the change to those nostalgics players to explain themselves, why praise a certain game yet they don't play it themselves.

For example, I always say that EQ is the best MMO ever made and new MMOs should follow its footsteps, yet I don't plan to play EQ myself.

I am interested to understand what keeps them from playing their favorite MMO, though they think is still the best in many ways.

Asheron's Call for about 5 years until I lost interest.

No blue bubble.  If you haven't played AC then you won't know what that means.

Lineage 2 is still my favorite MMO but I can't go back, I keep attempting to, but they won't stop making the cash shop give power and money. Before it was possible to buy adena yes, but you always ran the risk of getting caught (which hardly ever happened) but now you can go buy some r grade enchant scrolls and sell the hell out of those, or even just enchant your weapon with them. Pointless.
