Stuff like this certainly doesn't help:

Unfortunately a lot of self described "gamers" act like spoiled badly behaved children online, even though most of them physically aren't children.

Not to sterotype but I generally find those who did not grow up with gaming the very same people who frown upon gaming.  The majority of adult males I come across now play or have played COD or BF on a console at the very least.

Gaming to me is becoming the new Golf, except you don't pay huge huge sums for metal and membership fees.

Though it is often said in my family circles oh he likes his gaming, shelving me into a corner that I'm not really a part of normal society.  Although I would like to point out the very same people ridicule me and my son for being really into a sport.

Stand up for what you enjoy, I do. There's lots of bitches around who try to take someone down to make themselves feel better.

Good thing football fans act like reasonable adults.

I am a 28 year old ex police officer, 9 years was enough for me. During those 9 years though I found out a lot of other cops played quite a bit of video games. The older vets who had 15-20+ years were oblivious to it, but the younger guys I started with and others who came after me were all big COD or BF fans for shooters. We would joke about toting a gun around during the day just to go home and tote one around on a video game at night lol.

The day I realized I was in a different league so to speak was when I was  asked "Yo dude why weren't you on last night shooting it up with us on some COD?"

my reply "Oh man sorry, I had this raid on WoW I was raid healer and we wouldn't have gotten past the 4th boss in the zone unless myself and another healer showed up. I did get some really awesome shoulders though last night."

(Blank stare) Oh...uh....ok.

Lmao I explained WoW to him and ya know what.... I think half the agency who played shooters are now trying out MMO's because I just kept telling them and showing them how involved and customized it could be.

I dont see gaming by myself as a hobby.

You just consume it like watching TV and play to relax when you have time for it. In real life you advance with many hobbies you dont just consume.

Handicapped people play a different role here, Iam happy that some of them did find something what they enjoy and can actually do. They have limited options but do the best what they can.

I've thought about this before and I came to the conclusion that things such as...

art, music etc are a form of self-expression therefore respected.

sports is a form of productive exercise, from a psychological point of view those who are more physically active is more "attractive" not sexually but as a human being in general than someone who sits around playing video games.

reading leads to knowledge so I guess people see reading as time well spent vs playing video games which will probably be obsolete when the next new game comes out.

so in other words, playing video games really has no benefit to you to grow as a person.

Video gaming needs more respect.  It has created jobs, released stress, and brought about some the greatest art I have ever had the privilege to live to see.  I'm glad I was born in the era of video gaming.

Gen11:6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them."

I think video gaming is the prelude to actually creating new worlds.

I think it's because you sit on your @ss for long periods of time to do it.

And wasted time isn't necessarily wasted if you produce something or if there's some benefit of that wasted time... The assets you create playing video games are not tangible and basically only last as long as the time you play the game AND ill effects of sitting on your @ss for long periods of time, there's no 'benefit' to that, as a matter of fact it's a 'bad hobby' to have when it comes to physical health.

No bitchers.

As opposed to football games, beer, and pretzels because that's honorable.  And it's sports.

I learned to shrug it off. I was rejected for so many things I care about, I just stopped caring what other people think. Trust me, there could be "worse" things than computer games. Stand up for you hobby, or the stereotype will never cease!

Only if people see "hey THIS guy is a gamer" they will eventually learn to abandon their stereotype.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I guess it is in part also due to the rather steretype characters in computer and video games. The plots, the heroes, the villains, the depiction of males and females... all tends to be rather juvenile in many games. Games are in that aspect still much in their puberty.

A forum is a place where people can discuss about different opinions. So what I don't get is, how people react offended when they come to a forum and then find... well different opinions. If a different opinion offends you, what are you even doing here?

I dunno? The culture, the participants?

My best guess.

Back in the day we were shunned as nerds and shut ins, now we are associated with the new breed of entitled and obnoxious gamers who can't think or form their own opinions.

The scary part is one day the world will be run by adults who were never spanked as kids and got trophies just for participating.

Because all people see is the addiction that either kills babies due to neglect or wreck relationships or fail school due to constantly playing a stupid game.  This is the same as all the drug addict stories you hear.

Nothing productive ever comes out of gaming unlike music, using your artistic skills, or playing (not spectators) sports.  Gamming isn't a hobby, it's a form of entertainment.  Do you consider watching sports, soap operas, reality shows, or whatever a hobby?  Gaming is just a time killer.

Too much people take gaming WAY TOO SERIOUSLY.  Just look at the maturity of smack talk, drama, ect ect that is in every MMO and all the drama that comes out in guilds.

Gaming is a validation of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Discourse on Arts and Science.

There is so much more productiveness one can do instead of gaming excessively.  I would hardly call it a hobby, and people who do are a joke.

People whom redefine words to fit their own bias are a joke in my opinion.

Hobby: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation.

Once everyone has Virtual Reality in their homes the respect for gaming is bound to go up do to the exercise value.

reading = possibility of learning something

playing sports = exercise

making music = being creative

other hobbies = endless possibilities

video game = if a typical mmorpg = violence. if non violent then it is not being creative, learning or providing any form of exercise, in fact the only thing it might provide is pleasure, so, is there any wonder it is viewed as a waste of time!

(Note: I play hours every day!)

1. honestly watching TV as a hobby actually has a stronger positive reputation then video games.

2. Video games increase your cognitive abilities in ways books do not. Yes you would likely learn something from a book (greatly depending on WHAT you read) but the skills from video games help you put better context to what you learn.

3. Movies = violence. TV = violence. Having said that without question the gaming industry could do with a LOT more non-violent video games and that is something I think they should try harder at.

At some point in time, a hobby starts. People pick up the hobby, few at first, but more pick it up over time. Eventually, enough people pick the hobby up and participate in the hobby that it becomes common, instead of marginal. Once the hobby is common, and stays common long enough, people who grow up with the hobby become the people who are "running things", and then the hobby is no longer frowned upon.

Maybe replace "hobby" with "new forms of entertainment". Entertainment has gone from plays to radio, to movies, then to television and finally to interactive computer entertainment. Video games haven't been around long enough yet for people to just accept them as "normal".

Nailed it.

Most people of my generation are blown away when I show them the games I play and what they actually involve. They cant believe they can see people running around from all over the world chatting in vent working together to complete a challenge etc. Their understanding of what we do when we play games is stuck at the infant stage when they grew up - that is why they  judge us poorly.

On the flip side, the guys that turn gaming entertainment into an obsession over their women really hurt us. They don't understand how efficient the female gossip network system is and thanks to them "gaming" has gained a foothold on top of the "danger" list.

The problem with the whole woman thing is that really they should be playing to. Here we are experiencing what is likely the largest technical revolution in entertainment and women are expected to sit on the couch and knit or make pies

pnp RPGs have been around even longer -- since early 70s and they still get weird looks

even from people who enjoy card games and nonRPG board games

While I agree I think we are fighting nature not expectation - I'd bet most men would love their partners to play.

There are things both sexes prefer either thru upbringing or by nature and I think women (in general) prefer other things. Just like male dominated industries I think it  will be very difficult to influence women to enter gaming in masses (well not particular styles of games anyway).
