If that were true many, many games would have long since been gone.  Graphics get people in the door.  Community and gameplay keep them there.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. For all the complaining about quality gameplay mechanics, gamers don't put their money where their mouth is. The game currently has all the stuff the OP is asking for, but older dated graphics and animations.

This is why, despite the flaws of little indie Eldevin, it's a fun game for me. I just don't need CryEngine graphics to dive into a game. I also realize I'm likely in a small minority and out of touch with mainstream gamers. That's okay because there is stuff I like and I support that with money and my time.

I think a mind wipe so people could play an mmo like it was their first time again, would be easier to build than a new mmo people here would actually like. - DamonVile

If graphics are the gateway drug, then the graphic junkies will ditch out when a new improved shiny visual feast comes along. I'm saying if people aren't attracted to the game because of how the play works and the quality of the community, then they're not likely to stay.

I would be playing it right now if the classes had actual choice involved with them. Nothing bothers me more then when gear is the only difference between two characters of the same class. I guess this is why I prefer eq2.

I've been playing VG since it launched. I too always feel sad when I see people posting on here about what they want and knowing VG has just about all of it, but they probably have never and won't ever try it. All because of the bad launch horror stories or now, its age.

I'd hardly call VG wowified. It has both elements of sandboxes and themeparks in it, and it is more quest driven than straight grinding, but it's far from WoW or many of its clones. It does so many things well, and actually not all that many things badly anymore.

The graphics overall are still actually pretty damn good, I think. The graphic design and landscapes/world especially. The character models and animations, though, need updating. But I'm willing to look past those, always have been in games if the gameplay and community are good. Server performance has been an issue for many, although the game has been heavily optimized recently to cut back on all that. The game isn't really the ghost town many believe it to be either, although if you play at really off times it might be pretty sparse.

Apart from those things though, and PvP, which I know some people really do want, and that's fine, VG does so much stuff really well. If the type of game at all interests you, you should at least try it out.

There was actually just a rather large patch to VG yesterday where they did a big round of optimizations and updates, with a new big raid dungeon coming out soon.

Edit: I can't spell apparently.

When it first released I enjoyed it a lot until the bugs became too much- when I tried it latterly it was still fun but receiving too little love from the devs.

So yes if it got updated graphically and a few other tweaks and patches I would play it.

The Critical Hit Pretzel!

12/11/13 2:00:33 PM#28

Vanguard was... quite horrible at launch. It really fuels that bias against it. Perhaps if done right I'd enjoy it. In the end though it WAS released before so my bias will keep it as a "Meh". Given it was a new game though I'd think I'm be relatively excited, given they do 'modernize' the game a little... and I mean a little and NOT all the modern stuff they added.

It being themepark at all doesn't bother me. Most people who cry for sandbox don't actually WANT a sandbox, I'd gamble my money on it that a lot would quickly leave a sandbox game due to either having nothing to really do that feels meaningful, or simply falling behind as chances are certain groups would take control and as time goes on that control would only become more and more cemented with very little chance of ever being dethroned EVER without something on their end causing it.

Be Brief, Be Bright... Be Gone.

12/11/13 2:02:52 PM#29

I probably wouldn't play it anymore than I did, and I kept going back hoping for something more.  On paper it has almost everything I want.  In practice it was just "ok", nothing that was great IMO.  A good MMO IMO does something great, VG didn't do anything great, it's like the devs for each feature reached a point and said good enough giving IMO the whole game a feel of meh.

Housing was very limited

Diplomacy while being different from anything else IMO was just boring.  Crafting was a button mash.

Harvesting was meh

Quests, dungeons were pretty standard

Classes, some were interesting, some had interesting twists (E.g bard making the songs)- others were just new twists for what we've seen for decades

Models looked ok, animations were not very good IMO

The world did not give me a sense of wonder or immersion

Quit worrying about other players in a game and just play.

Perhaps I should have said that I've played a lot of Vanguard already, and already enjoyed all the things in the OP's list. I even loaded it up on a SSD drive, which makes it almost instant when switching chunks.

Yes, the game world is huge, and open, but the problem is that it is *too* open. There is not enough stuff in the open spaces. Sparse vegetation, and lots of brown ground, make it less interesting. The gameplay is great, and I still play on occasion, but if they just re-released the game as-is, with bug fixes (I found very few bugs anyway), it wouldn't be enough for me to come back.

RIP City of Heroes. One of my favorite MMO's.

No, you spelled it correctly.

I tried Vanguard about year ago and it was fun.  I played for about a month.  There was this weird lag though that made combat annoying.  Maybe it's fixed now, but I have moved on.

That's kind of what I like about it. It feels like "a world".

Part of what I detest about lord of the rings online is that I can't travel along a plain or a road without having to deal with a mob every 20 feet.

It's nice to be able to set out into the distance and find something interesting as opposed to fighting or running from something every step along the way.

I played it for quite a while at launch, it is a great game.

So, in your supposed parallel universe, if it was released now instead of back then and if it had the same "quality of Vanguard to quality of other current games" ratio, I would play it in the parallel universe too.

The mind projection fallacy is the assumption that our subjective judgments (or lack thereof) reflect intrinsic qualities of objects or reality in general.

Tough to say, because I can't really tell whether the things I really disliked about Vanguard (aside from the technical glitches) were simply due to a lack of resources and time or purposefull design qualities that wouldn't have changed.

1) Litteraly the most infantile and amaturish quest writing I have ever experienced in an MMO.... "flying pizza monsters" (or maybe it was "clock monsters")... really?,   "go kill me some treants so I can build my wife a cabinate from the lumber"......really? what's wrong with the stand of oak tree's your standing in front of, right by that stump with the axe in it?. Many more of that ilk.

2) A dead world. I don't mean vast and sparsely populated, that's fine.....I mean "dead". No animals moving, birds singing, butterflies floating in the breeze, cities empty save for the few essential quest givers. Mobs being few and fare between fine......but the sense that the world is completely absent of all life (save what's needed for gameplay) in places that shouldn't be the case.....that just doesn't work for me.

Yes, it is in my top 5 mmorpgs.  If it had a full development crew now, I would play it.  I was on the pvp server, when they announced they would only focus on pve, and it became a ghost town and I didn't like the idea of just moving to pve at the time and the reduced focus it seemed to have from SoE, so I stopped playing.

I have been debating going back to a mmo I played before atm, and it is on the list, since the last content I did was APW, and I think they have more stuff out since then, but without much of a dev team, I don't know if it is worth it.

So yes, if VG rereleased with a new commitment, and for those that say no pvp, they did have a team and ffa pvp server at one point, so no reason (well they have to balance it, which is why they stopped pvp focus, because they broke it with pve patches) they couldn't have them.

I would play a official classic UO that stayed true to more of it's original gameplay, and I am not so caught up on pvp, but the older skill systems (hate the new combos/skills), dungeons and such...If they kept the older focus style in new content.  I have gone back to play UO in different forms many times (using 2d client as still my favorite way to do so).

Yes.  Maybe thats what it was for me too.  I know I stated other things, but the world did feel dead, I wonder if they would have had those other things if I would have been more engaged in it.  hmm.

edit - actually now that I think about it, that does go a long way.  In WoW the squrirels and frogs and deer around with birds circling overhead.  In EQ I don't recall seeing those but the sound effects all had them giving the same impression.

Quit worrying about other players in a game and just play.

VG does have most of those immersion things you are mentioning, especially in terms of the sound effects. I guess it might not have quite as many random birds and such flying around, but it definitely has some, and other wildlife, and definitely sound.

Here are a couple videos of just the ambient/landscape environments in VG, that actually focuses on the surroundings and views. Pretty cool, actually.

No. Ive played it before and loved the game, especially diplomacy system. But for me rerelease wont change anything, I dont need zergs running around to enjoy it. If I wanted to play it, Id play it now. And I advice to everyone that says "YES!!" go and play. There is enough players to group with

Is that sarcasm?

EVE overhauled their graphics engine with the Trinity update (2007). After that all these expansion had graphical updates (for ship, UI, astral bodies): Quantum Rise (2008),  Tyrannis (2010),  Crucible (2011)  and Inferno (2012).
