I draw the line there. That one cost them my business, whoever thought it was a good idea to charge for that has no idea why ftp actually makes money. You kinda got to lure them in farther than level 8.

In Rift, you have to pay $5 if you want to use the AH. SWTOR is no different than any other MMO

Why is it that fantasy trolls are vulnerable to fire, but internet trolls thrive on flame wars?

Made a new toon, couldn't roll a sith, had to pay for that or unlock in in legacy.....ok, that's cool too, gotta make money somehow, saw new races, that's interesting.

So then I am playing, was enjoying it, done the story before but you know, was enjoying it all the same. So I got some new moves, was telling myself "I want to put that rush ability above my builder, cause it will make for easier clicking." cause I am a clicker.

Then it came up, I HAD TO PURCHASE THE ABILITY TO HAVE EXTRA HOTBARS.

so I uninstalled the game, came here to moan, and warn people talk about how horrible the cash shop is in the game, well here is a prime example.

Sorry dude, but this is is really an "in other news water is wet" story.  It's pretty much common knowledge that SWTOR has the worst f2p model on the market (I think after seeing it, the guys at SOE decided to lighten up on the EQ2 restrictions as they saw how poorly people responded to it and saw that their restrictions weren't too dissimilar).  Many have made fun of it; even the guys at Bluehole made fun of it when they made the teaser trailer for TERA going f2p (remember the part where they said they "won't take away your hotbarts"?  That was a deliberate jab at what happened in SWTOR).

Right, because we totally can judge what all future f2p games will be like based on the one with the widely recognized worst model, the one that does almost everything wrong, and not models that do almost everything right *coughAionLineage2andTeracough*

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

Haha! This OP made my day!

Normally I prefer sub. 15 bucks/month is fine for me. But sure, I can play a FTP game aswell and pay a small fee for some newly released features or dungeons or so! No problem! But pay extra for another hotbar to put my abilities on..... hahaha!! I almost fell of the chair...

I win. They lose.

So let's say he got to the end of his free to 20 WoW trial and made a thread complaining he had to spend $40 to make a panda and then spend $15 every month to access his hotbars. Would your answer still be so ridiculous or would it be, "Don't be a cheapskate and pay for your gaming?"

My answer in either case is don't be a cheapskate if you want to play.

I like the game BUT charging for ui elements is just silly.  It makes them look like the greedy, money grubbing company that we all know they are =D.

Actually I think they'd say the same thing, because hating on Blizzard seems to be in vogue these days, especially on this site. The way some people talk you'd think everyone in the company had been convicted of pedophilia or some other kind of horrific crime.

That aside, I agree somewhat with the OP. Charging people to access a complete UI is pretty damn shady. But it's their game and their rules, play by them or leave. Plenty of other people are willing to make use of the bandwidth your absence will free up, I'm sure.

Example of a common core math problem: If you have four pencils and seven apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof? Purple. Because aliens don't wear hats.

i've proven with multiple F2Ps that playing for free and enjoying it or moving to the next is possible.

the only requirement is that you set your perception that the game is only the part that is accessible for free and you judge it based on this alone. how much you on't block behind the dollar, that's how much I will evaluate you on.

if the game is providing great and extnded entertainment for free, THEN I will pay something. Because i have developed my faith in its longevity as a source of entertainment.

case in point I bought a skin in LoL. why? I've been playing for 6 months, I loved it, I knew I'd play 6 more months, I figured the game is worty of my donation. by no means does a skin have a value of $10 to me. It absolutely does not. But I felt like giving them those $10.

asking me to pay for action bars is not going to get you any money from me. I don't pay for in-game advantages. If the game isn't enjoyable without paying, I'll keep searching.

During my EVE trial I subscribed the next day. I never bought PLEX. I believe RMT should not happen in either direction. I'm not paying subscription with in-game cash, I'm not buying in-game cash with real money.

perhaps I phrased it poorly.

by 'farming' i should've said "not buying stuff from AH". more or less just playing the game, basically.

in pure grinding I imagine it can be done in a few days by an experienced player on a new character.

Note that direct trade is not limited, you can trade with players just fine. so if you have professions - which i do not - then that might speed it up further. I'm still a new player, for ME as fres 60 it will take a few weeks. I'm past the half-point.

I bought the game and subscribed for a few months,  all i got was some extra hotbars and cartel coins.

approximates cost.  120$

You downloaded the game for free and paid 5.00 for some hot bars. and 10$ for some coins.

Im not sure what the better deal is........

The res thing is pretty lame to me though.

Erm, what did they lose actually? A customer that is not willing to pay? That isn't a loss, it is a relieve of bandwidth and services.

So the question is, what did you win?

SWTOR isn't a F2P game. It is a failed sub fee game desperately trying to stay alive by adapting to a F2P model. Those are two very different things. It has one of the weaker models out there and isn't the example to really use when discussing this. There were plenty of horrible sub games, doesn't mean all sub games are horrible.

I got so much trouble on my mind Refuse to lose.

12/11/13 8:56:31 AM#35

They have absolutely worst F2P money grabbing plan. And you know the game did cost 300 million dollars to make.

They have to return it somehow.

What happened to me was that upon hitting lvl 16 you need to register your email to be able to level up.

Ok , why not. Except that they have bug in the system and confirmation email was never sent no mater how many times I tried.

I would contact support , but as free player you dont get to contact support. So hehe.

Good going EA

Anyway. Not only do they limit you so you can not use most of your skills as f2p player (only f2p mmo that does this)

But you also level 1/2 speed. Which would be ok, if the game was not themepark. And there is no way to earn exp outside of the quests. But you soon (lvl 17) are to low to follow intended quest progression.

Basically simply put you can not play if you are not subscribed past lvl 17

Desperately trying to stay alive? I'd say new content every 4-6 weeks, a million players a month and making a profit is not desperately staying alive.

I would say grown adults still hating a video game and posting their hate on every single thread on a game that has been out for over two years are the desperate ones.  But that's just my opinion.

It's a product with a high degree of price discrimination. P2P games are products with a very low degree of price discrimination. The payment model is just an attempt to optimize profits. One isn't better or worse than the other in general.

It is fairly obvious that the payment model chosen for SWToR is a beneficial model. More people get to play a game and they will continue to play the game if they like it. Many more people will spend less money while more money is made by the developer. There are more benefits for consumers and more benefits for the developer. There is no downside to SWToR going F2P, except for people who for some reason have a personal interest in something that is a very impersonal thing.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I was coming back to the game, lost my account info, was making a new account, everything's good.
