First I would choose an engine which can properly deal with latest graphics standards like DX11, offering tesselation and latest shaders for realistic graphics and dynamically changing light to achieve a look which is as close to the movies as possible.

Options: Unreal, Cryengine, Forgelight

64 bit only, PC only. Give 32 bit OS the boot.

-> BASIC DECISION

Then I would declare the mission statement, RPG meets GTA IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE.

Action combat, skill based, Skyrim style.

Start out with maybe 3-4 iconic planets from the movies but make them big, round and epic in size and visual appearance.

Kashyyyk, Dromund Kaas, Coruscant and Tattooine. Combine procedural generation with handmade assets.

Day/night cycles, standard.

One planet added with each paid DLC every year. Hoth first DLC. Endor second. Then Mustafar.

NPC AI: Animals roaming around can be tamed as pets, mounts or killed for ressources,

Human NPCs have their cycles like in GTA, talking and interacting see GTA V for reference

No classes, an open skill system.

Achieving Jedi/Sith and using lightsabers as hard and mythical as in SWG.

Races: One added every year. Starting races: Human, Togruta, Wookie, Droid, Twilek.

Open world housing in capital city skyscrapers and outskirts. In cities instanced apartments, outskirt areas for house building and guild cities. Inactivity of 6 months, your house gets removed and put to your inventory.

Cantinas and casinos with minigames. Holochess, Pazzak, Betting.

Bounty hunting missions: Take missions to hunt down players or NPCs in space and on ground

Mounts: Speeders. Real speeders, real fast, open world racing like in Defiance with the ATVs.

Customizable and upgradeable

Fighters: Different "Snowspeeder" type flying mounts

Jetpacks for Bounty hunter specialization

Space ships: Seamless going from ground into space. Fully customizable interiors like SWG had. Minigames on board like Holochess.

Space stations and mining, a fully fledged space sim with trading and mining and open space PvP as it happens.

Plus PvE scenarios like run attacks on stations, do escort missions, plan assault on a star destroyer or even the Death Star.

Oculus Rift support on launch.

Make it happen Disney. Thanks.

Dear Disney,

can I use the license for 10 years and choose a studio not dictated by EA?

Thanks

Doc Brody

PS: I can get the budget on my own

Nah.

Nice idea, but really too personalized.

Some of the choices seems clearly (at least for me) a bad designer decision, but probably are response of Your taste. Not that I disagree (I would go with different choices, as bad and as personal - but hey, what can SW fanboy do?!), but it wouldn't work as well as You think.

For example - Hoth? Really? What's the time period. Because if it's before ep.V it would be pointless and against canon and after ep. V still wouldn't have much sense. Add to this racial choice of Togruta... and that is quite risky. Especially if You would like to place game in or after time frame of original trilogy.

Still - it's a concept I would pay to try and it's a world I would pay to live in. But not in SWG underdeveloped manner, or SWtOR theme park boreness way.

Your vision is far away from mine, but still it would be 100 times better game than any SW available :P

Definitely would like it. I would add open world ffa pvp with HEAVY crime punishement and refined SWG crafting system plus item decay.

EDIT: And i would like EVE style skill developement as i dont like grind.

I like it!

Then, when it's made, I can go onto MMORPG.com and make many threads on what I don't like about your game, and what I'd do with the IP, money, and a dev team.

Unfortunately I have to .  Iconic planets from the movies and one of them is dromund kaas.  Curuscant is a nice idea but for me seems it would be too much work and very lag heavy the way it seems to be stated.  And so on.

Still nice idea.

~perspective~

11/26/13 1:29:11 PM#9

@ Doc,

Do you have a portfolio where we can see your work for games you have released or worked on?  Also, you need  C++, art assets, lore, database XP, oh the list goes on an don until you need about 30-60 people along with enough capitol to pay for at least 7 years worth of development.

So you can download UDK or Cry Engine 3 for free and get to work on your own game. Working with these development tools really changed my perspective and career options for real life endeavors. It really changed my perspective on online games such as server tools, log in servers, etc.

You could make a rendition of your game using the built in multiplayers tools for UDK or Cry Engine. Let me know if you have any questions :) I aint no pro but I know the tools. Even Hero Cloud 2.0 would be worth it to learn on.

If I made an mmo or SW mmo my first and main feature would be to ban you.  Running around this site not having a clue of the current state of Swtor .  Hoping a video game fails and get shut down is just sad dude.

I'm sure he knows the current state of Swtor, we both know it feels insanely restricted, the feel of the game is far from immersive, the game shouldn't even be considered as an MMO, since the only enjoyable part is the story mode. Both faction is retarded-ly imbalance, class pretty imbalance as hell (but its understandable). The game it self is made not for the gamer, just another cash cow. What sad is the one that makes heavy assumption, and his idea is great.

I think the biggest mistake of any Star Wars mmo design is to allow people to either choose force sensitive as a class or allows a player to earn it.

IMO force sensitives should be random - at character creation you might have a chance of have that seeded in your toon, and at random point in time in the future it will might have a chance to manifest itself, and only then do you have a chocie of whether to go down the path of jedi/sith or choose to ignore your force sensitivity and stick with being bounty hunter or something.

Only this level of realism and life-like unfairness can prevent the problem of everyone running around with lightsabers, and gives justification for them to be powerful (because they r rare).

I cannot fiddle but I can make a great state of a small city.

11/26/13 5:33:03 PM#15

I'd get it out of the Old Republic time frame and move it forward to a time when Jedi were rare.

When everyone's running around with light sabers then there's nothing special about them.

The only issue with this is that people will keep buying accounts or remaking characters hoping to win the Jedi lottery.

There is almost no good way to do a Jedi system, and the inclusion of a Jedi system was probably the biggest flaw in SWG.

I would do everything that SOE did with SWG... then everything BW did with SWTOR. Just so I could learn first hand how not to handle the Star Wars IP. Then I'd watch the original trilogy, write down what I saw and then try to build a business model that was profitable, appealed to Star Wars fans first and didn't care about subscriber volume metrics but profitability while staying true to the business model.

But really, in all honesty, I'll just leave the game design to the professionals. (Unless I stay a Holiday Inn tonight, then I'll get back to you tomorrow).

They can try but it won't help very much - because you've missed the key point where I pointed out the condition that even if your character is seeded to be force sensitive, the force sensitivity MIGHT have a chance to manifest itself (which also means it might never will, or even if it does you might not know when).

So it is in essence, it is quite pointless to keep creating toons until you get one.

It is like if a couple keeps giving birth until they have a son who will be president, lol :P

I mentioned this idea because I have actually thought this through for a long time (ever since early SWG days, because I was gaming the scenario on how they might implement the force system back then... turns out their concept was quite lazy and simplistic). It is not off the bat random side-thoughts.

If you want to limit Jedi/sith you could add roleplaying  elements to the class as a balancing point. Limit the amount of money and property they can have, deprive them of noncombat skills to make up for their use of the force  and/or add other alpha classes that are also supposed to be rare like Wookie Warriors and Mandalorian Commandos and Assassination Droids and Gungan Heroes (j/k).
