May the game be ever in your favor.

I honestly couldn't care less... I always go with my own gender though when creating a character.

Asking what players think...it always ends up in tears. :)

In my experience players pick a race on the basis of wanting to look like the race (not in all ways but with some of their features), because they like the lore of the race or because they are making a statement. I have only found it is women who want to make this sort of statement, men never do. So women will pick races which are not "pretty" on the basis of making a statement.

Personally I say go by the lore, if there are female Dwarves in the lore and they have beards put them in. But if they are not in the lore don't put them in just because some players might frown on male only races. And don't give them beards just because the men do, if it does not make sense, don't put it in.

In general terms I have concerns with this whole area of design. Designing to increase your playerbase has not lead to good choices in the past in MMO land, designing for solo players, designing for console players, designing for social media players. So design based on wanting to get more women into MMOs is not a good idea in my book. Turn the argument on its head, design MMOs for men and you get what? Scarlet Blade? Not sure if that's true but it does point to the fact that MMOs need to be designed on lore and game mechanic principles, not gimmicks and the desire to appeal to an ever larger player base.

I think female Charr in GW2 are near-perfect non-human females.

They look a bit more feminine than male Charr without transforming into sexy humans with a Charr flair.

I am male, and will play female characters the closer they are to human females.   If I want a non-human race I'll just play male.

Female here.

You might be surprised that many times I played a male character because of the things you mention and to make certain that gender won't play a part in a guild invite. Many times the female characters are just so sexual that it makes me uncomfortable even playing one. In real life I don't even show cleavage, my body is for my lover alone so I'm dressed as close to a quaker as can be done in modern clothing.  If the choice is slutty chick or normal male, I've previously chosen male.

It's still awkward though to first talk on a voice chat and people sometimes act like a lion just entered the room throwing off it's sheep costume once I out myself. For that reason I wouldn't mind seeing some females represented more beefy but I don't think that I NEED it if you think it will hamper your development. As mentioned, I could play male characters just fine but I don't RP so that may play a part for some and some would invariably moan that you left them out and they can't roleplay well enough with a male.

Just avoid the string bikinis is my suggestion for your fems. It's not just about body size and being done a billion times but realism if the male characters are built for battle and the females for sunbathing yet both are supposedly fighters. In real life I'm not delicate except for my hands (freakishly tiny if you ask me - 6 1/2 inch wrist and over 6ft in heels - reference my mother can't even reach me in height barefoot with herself in heels but her wrist is 71/2 inches - compare to your own) but I've got wide shoulders and I'm taller than most women. I've got muscular legs but I'm also flexible because I've done Yoga poses since I was a kid. That can give you an idea of what my type would want to resemble.  Something that looks able but not a bodybuilder.

Truth is... I could play a cube if the game is right and I suppose I did in a way playing Tetris for years so it's all relative. I don't think I bond with my character like some though and need it to be exactly like them but I know that boney MMO chicks are the norm so if you spend time on this, might try something non-mainstream.

Amusing poll and subsequent realisation that it was crap.

I'd rather have fewer races and more options to personalise them.

even though your poll is mucked, i think you can still get decent data.

my thoughts: as long as it isn't gender locked classes (which i despise), i'm generally ok with what ever the choices are. some races, have always been one sex/sexless so adding females of those races feels wrong to me. of course if you're going with male only races (like dwarves), there is no reason why you couldn't also have female only races (like amazons). this somewhat solves the issue of adding sexes to races that otherwise don't/shouldn't have them.

i'm a guy, so i can't really claim to know everything (lol); but i'm pretty sure most women would prefer playing the cute/pretty female type characters. i can't see a female gnoll being really high on the list of any one's play list, much less a female gamer. for rp'ers it's pretty much a given that some races are only playable as one sex.

Let me ask you a question.   Why is the amorphous character model exclusive only to the Super Hero sub-genre?

Instead of the seemingly universal fantasy approach of a static character model (of various races) and the equipped gear modifying the image, the amorphous approach should be equally applicable to fantasy games.  When I made my character image, I wanted that image for a reason -- to make myself identifiable.  But the fantasy model will artificially 'force' the character's appearances to be similar when both equip the same piece of gear.  It's almost like the gear's 'look' is given more credence than the player's desires in fantasy games.

So, players have to meticulously use crude dye systems to try to achieve the look they want, but it never looks right compared to what the player really wanted.   The nice chest emblem is now the same color as the chest piece, and the aesthetic is gone.  The character named Red Medallion now has a green medallion instead of the glowing red gemstone on a silver necklace over his green leather tunic.  The gear choice and dye system has potentially altered the character's personal story.  It potentially limits the player.

So, why haven't we seen a host of fantasy games where you pick the basic body frame / sex and modify that frame with armor, weapons, clothing, racial features, skin textures, etc.?  These character creation systems only seem to be available in the limited number of Super Hero games.  Let's have some flexibility in fantasy, too, even if it ends up being monetized (which I don't like).

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

I disagree about men not being concerned about a statement but agree about women playing the ugliest thing they can find. I think it's psychological escape. I'm an attractive enough woman that I can get hit on anywhere, grocery store, gas station even once sitting with someone visiting their parole officer lol Since many males look at us as a body to consume it's nice to drop that in the virtual world by playing a character that couldn't possibly thought of as sexualized and sometimes to "make it so" for personal enjoyment. It's the equivalent of someone 400 lbs dancing half naked on youtube I suppose. You have trouble looking away and are shocked they did it but it's all entertainment like these games. I think too that being seen as a body instead of a mind in there too you can attempt to be judged by your intellectual worth by taking the pretty girl out of the equation and donning the shell of a neanderthal if needed. People with decent self-confidence can play something different than themselves that may even look worse but if they have low self-confidence that's where I think they have to cling to what society considers perfection which is photoshopped, inhuman proportions because they honestly think they have fallen short and that they should portray that exaggerated example to disguise their shortcomings. Put it this way, if I see a pretty character in game, I imagine a bloated mess behind the keyboard and the reverse. There are probably plenty of cases where it doesn't apply but I'd be willing to say you could use the word most with this. Odds are simply in favor of it because there are more unattractive people on the planet.

This is based on the woman that introduced me to WOW, she played an orc that was built like a man and in real life she wasn't even 100 lbs. She used to love dancing with it and making dirty comments. Along with another woman I played with who was a part of a couple. They made jokes about how he was the girl in the relationship. He spent hours designing the housing and testing new outfits all the time. He would ask us what we thought of his gear. The point I would bring up for men are the men who try to imitate some character like Mr. T or the guys who wear pink gear. I think many people like the unexpected or change in what is expected. Men also choose character names related to some celebrity or a pun of them so I think they can be just as vain or have some statement to make in character creation. Having seen many gameplay videos with men they also spend much more time in character creation than I do. They test all the sliders while I'm more likely to choose random random random to see what fun things come up. That has been my single complaint about first play videos from men is that I have to skip ahead 20 minutes past them using character creation.

edit: got pulled away for a meeting, added my favorite aspect of any convo, why we do it psychologically

There are tons of Male armors that show off buff bodies, abs, pecks...

Maybe they want to know about that too as an issue.

You might not know the extent that women experience tales that their bodies aren't perfect because they don't match photoshopped women. Men don't get photoshopped to the extent that women do and they don't have as many magazines meant to sell them things. That's ok though, it's easy enough to avoid a magazine unless you are 12 - 17 years old. What magazines were representing a male image that you can recall, for me I had Cosmopolitan and Seventeen which was specifically for girls subscribed to me by my own mother as part of the things women should know. You wouldn't believe all there is to learn for a woman from how to use makeup to how to use feminine products and many discussions about hair removal.  As far as I know men aren't depicted in magazines until you get into ones like Men's Health but you can tell me about the teen mags that boys are sent to read to mold their image? I don't recall my brother having been given any magazine subscriptions and there weren't any mags dedicated to telling him what a male was unless you count Heavy Metal magazine which again was my sub where I saw men.

I find this funny though if you want to see the reverse.

Fat to thin via photoshop ...

Lodge your complaint at the OP not me if they aren't approaching the subject with soft enough gloves to suit you too unless we want to have me rant again and end up banned some more. I would also like to mention that He-Man was a superhero, Barbie... exactly. Every toy my brother had from Army men to action figures were all strong and triumphant while the dolls and my little ponies I got were candy colored blobs that had no reason to exist. Even our cabbage patch dolls were different. He got a Koosa and I got a chubby baby. Don't tell me kids aren't raised with certain expectations and women aren't drilled into them that being pretty is more important than being smart, even smart women get told they should wear makeup, I have a brother and being the older of us I got to defend him instead of the other way around. When is the last time someone suggested to you to paint your face everyday, shave all your body hair off and pretend it never existed, and to be fashionable all while putting in the same hours at school. What extra curricular learning did boys have because I recall my brother going out to play while I got to stay inside and learn how to cook and how to decorate a house along with clean it. My mother truly believed these were important life skills for women, men well... go play... a woman will do these things for you later, son.

I like playing smaller, thinner, "happier" characters. More often than not that means a female toon (although I play male Asure on GW2)

Reason two would be that I don't need to live through my character.  I don't need to play a male and pretend its me.

Finally I am going to spend a lot of time looking/listening to my toon. I would rather watch a female toon than a male one.

Just to add after reading more of the thread.  I also dislike and don't play overly sexual female toons.  See Tera.  Now a good female monster type is the Iksar.  The only reason you even know its female is because you are told they are.

I am a female gamer in my late 20s.  First of all, thank you for caring enough about female players to even post the poll.  I prefer to play a female character that looks feminine.  I would not play a game where gender was ignored entirely nor would I ever play a male character.  I like being female ... in life and while gaming.

Edit ... Greenreen's thoughts and comments are her own and do not reflect the attitude of the average female gamer.

Double standards to the extreme...you don't know because you aren't a man, you don't look for them and in fact overlook them...thus the entire point of that photo going around. There is He-Man, all buff, blond and handsome and wearing just a loincloth and boots yet there is nothing wrong with it. all during a decade of hair bands filled with guys with long flowing hair and wearing makeup with as many magazines pushin the latest hunky male singer/musician/actor as there were women.

As for that last sentence...please...don't even try going there with that BS.

"I disagree about men not being concerned about a statement" - In the examples of men you gave who were concerned about how they looked in game, none of them were making a statement. That's the thing, I am not saying men have no concern about what their online toon look like, its just that they are not trying to make some sort of personal statement with a certain look.

"I recall my brother going out to play while I got to stay inside and learn how to cook and how to decorate a house along with clean it." - I think you got the better end of the deal, you were taught valuable life skills, your brother was taught nothing.

It is amusing that women think nothing of the male leads in nearly every TV show getting their top of in every episode they can. While if a women shows a bit of leg it is shocking! We on the other hand are quite the reverse, never thinking it at all odd that a female lead only ever does her laundry in a tshirt and hot pants. This is a case of only seeing things through the eyes of your real life "faction". :D

Male power trip fantasies do not equate to sexism.

It's a false equivalence.

So many fewer words than I used. Thanks, for posting that. We had some further banter back and forth but it was removed. Guess it was going off-topic for the tastes of some.

Right, I see the woman and men defined tasks as doing a disservice to both parties. It may be anecdotal but as an adult my brother has moved back home to mommy no less than 4 times, basically each time he fails as an adult he goes back to mom until he finds another woman to shack up with who will take care of him. I've told him how to improve himself but he downplays my advice because I am but a woman and the bible says that I am beneath him and should be subservient so we all move on with life. He will tell you any day of the week that his goal in life is to find a great wife who will birth him many children. My goal is career oriented but it's only because I've bucked traditional roles and I only live with men refusing to commit to marriage and get hemmed up in those expectations.

Is that so...

Can you place a link for the poll you took of every female gamer, please.

Look, it's not necessary to disassociate yourself with me because you think yourself more feminine than me. It's clear to everyone by the names on the posts that I'm posting with my comments and you with your own. If we were all going to say the same thing there would be no reason for the question at all.
