Wow - Thats a really lame thing to say to be honest....

The amount of work that goes into a KS or indiegogo presentation at the personal cost of all involved is sometimes HUGE,  then with great hope they 'pre-sell' their game to make their dream a reality.  I see so many people on these forums with ideas for new games or existing games - for most KS and Indiegogo etc are they're only real avenue.

The word "begging"  is poorly chosen.

Begging???  This is called support the game or don't, if you people want different games it costs alot of money and this AAA companies won't make anything like this or as creative, so again, why are you complaining... Support them or don't. I find it funny how you people think its so cheap to make a game and so easy.. When you have no idea...  To many of you complain you want advertisement, and when companies do you complain, there is no middle ground on this forums at all... Its nothing but whining.. I wish for once some of you would make your own games, so DEVS can whine about what you made... or were you work 24/7... You people are never happy, no matter what they do..

Makes me sick.

just read their post history, they talk like this all the time.

"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

The only question I have is why is Life is Feudal's logo a knife and a sickle arrange in a way to look like a communist party symbol?

Isn't Feudalism the direct opposite of communism? lol

Just found that odd

If everyone thought like this then a lot of these recent games would never get made.

Big publishers do not want to put money behind these types of games so basically if everyone thought the same as you then it would never be available. :)

They beg for free money so they can set themselves up with a job. It's begging, plain and simple.  If it were investors they were looking for - people fronting money with the possibility of a return - that would be different. But they are looking for free money to start a business with.  Begging, and that makes me sick.
I think that's a harsh way of looking at it. Dark does have a point in that you're going to be hard pressed to find these kinds of ideas outside of indie projects. If all you want is the status quo you have plenty of options, so I'm not sure why you'd want to attack those trying to bring something else to the table. No one said you have to contribute to a KS or similar funding outlet. You're more than welcome to wait for a finished product before putting down any money, if a project gains your interest.

Those backing these projects do so to support their chosen hobby, it's a risk they're willing to take, you're not.. so be it. Nothing will really explain your reaction to it though.

To not look like beggers, maybe they should allow a ROI for backers? you know, like a proper business loan?

Look at the 'feature' list. Look at the graphics quality (I know, I know, graphics/animations don't make a difference...). Their credentials is a list of the computer games they've played.

Is there any reason at all to think they are capable of creating and supporting this massively multiplayer Torque3D-based sandbox-style virtual world in any shape or form that it will 1) deliver adequately on their proposed features or 2) offer gameplay that would appeal to even a remotely significant number of people to keep it enjoyable or even running for any length of time?

Now, I don't have a problem with anyone calling me a Negative Nancy (or even more colorful versions) but if you do, please also share what history or facts regarding the title/team that you are basing your stance on.

Oh, don't worry, there's no danger that "everyone will think like that". Not at this point, anyway

Just as F2P games have their "whales", so niche indie MMO projects have their Kickstarter/Indigogo backers. There's always a few thousand people that will drop some money in the vague hope that their project of choice might see the light of day.

And secondly, none of "these recent games" have BEEN made yet. They are all in fairly early stages of development. Nobody knows what the final product will look like at launch, and how many of the original "feautures" will be cut or unrecognizably altered before then.

I've labeled Loktofeit as an overly negative person in the past, but I have to say on this one I agree with him about 100%.

Oh by the way. How does Indiegogo work? Do they also need to meet their goal if they are to receive a single penny, as is with Kickstarter? At least in Kickstarter you need to ask for a realistic amount of money or your project will be shot down.

They have a programming bear.

Can't fail!

Pledged many monies.

I seem to have a weakness for the newcomers and underdogs, I toss money at projects that may very well end up belly up. Guess I just want to see something new in the gaming market, I know you people love your reruns of wow (my attempt at sarcasm)...but then there's people like me, who need...a non-wow-like muh-mor-puh-gur.

Yup! Though Indiegogo takes your money upfront. So when you pledge, you are charged the amount right away, and if the project does not reach it's goal, your money is refunded. With kickstarter you can pledge all you like all day long, as long as you remember to unpledge when you sober up.

This game has all the bullets points that the "hardcore" seem to ask for. Wonder if these folks will jump on board or just keep complaining and waiting for that perfect game...

I think it's closer to buy to play, Vanguard freemium model came to mind actually. You get to the newbie island where you can get familiar with all the mechanics, but when you get the feeling that you just simply have too much money burning in your wallet, you can buy the game and enjoy or suffer all the content game offers. Like chucking more wood than a woodchuck could chuck -- wood...and digging graves for all those woodchucks that choke when chucking wood. What does chucking even meen?

Man, I've had way too much coffee today.

To not look like beggers, maybe they should allow a ROI for backers? you know, like a proper business loan?

If those backing it required as much they wouldn't be backing it would they?

People are always talking about KS backers getting a return on their investment.  If these developers using KS could afford to pay shareholders they wouldn't be using KS, now would they?  The reality of it is that the risk for them would be too great, and none of them would attempt developing games which typically are aimed at a niche audience.

The reality of it is that games, and MMOs especially, require a LOT of money to develop.  Even after raising money through KS they will still not be "set."  Most of us think of 1 million as a lot of money when it reality that's nothing for a business, even a small business.  Therefore, part of what KS is about is also gauging how much interest there is in the project.  If 1,000 people are willing to donate $50, then you can use that to estimate with a certain level of confidence how many people will be interested in buying the game at a typical retail price.  If no one donates, what that tells them is that there is not enough interest to make it even if they had the financial means from investors.

Thus, having people investing in games through KS would be a terrible idea.  How would developers know whether people are investing because they genuinely have an interest in the game or because they're just hoping for a return on investment down the line?  1,000 people could invest $50 to get a return, but only 100 are actually interested in owning the game, then you get skewed estimates on exactly how many people will buy the finished project when it's done and the game ends up flopping because there isn't as large of an audience as they estimated.
