Kinda bored of MMO's, playing singleplayer games is more fun atm.

Not happy, new mmo's are way to similar to the old ones that I played to the point I don't want to play them, because it just feels like starting the old ones over again, doubling the repetitivenes, which is not entertaining at all.

And seeing how many times I was cheated into thinking that this time will be different, I have no reasons to believe that titles that are going to be released next year are going to be any better. Hype now looks just the same as hype then. Overexaggerating and dramatizing features that will be only little bit different than what is now, I'm used to it.

And even though a slight change happened in terms of gameplay and mechanics (for better or for worse), the fact that there is still nothing original in terms of lore is just wrong. Every game has elfs, like it is some kind of real life creature. It is really not that challenging to design a new race that doesn't have long ears. Specially when you had 10 years of time to do it.

Sure, those alternate designs might not be financially as viable as others, but people can dream that one day "the norm" will be broken and something really different might come out.

What I worry about is some game will grab a huge playerbase and then the genre will switch to this new design, just like it did for WoW. I fear we will see very little in the way of variety ever again...

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

"happy with the MMORPG genre" is really a misnomer to me.

I don't look at genre and say .. "ha .. i am really happy with this one, but not that one".

I play individual games. Some MMOs provides good entertainment to me, some don't.

I am "happy" with those which do, not unlike i am happy with The Avengers, or the new Sleepy Hollow tv show. But i can't say i am "happy" or "unhappy" about movies, or tv in general.

I am "happy" with entertainment in general though, because there seems to be more than enough to keep me entertained.

Wow is part of the genre and though I like WoW. I have seen it in better times. The rest of the genre Gw2 aside, I would say I am unhappy with. I dont like juggling payment models, and piss poor quality. I don't like being lied to. I don't like being left in the dark. I dont like investing in something just to have it go f2p. WoW and Gw2 aside the genre is very unpredictable and full of untrustworthy game makers.

Of course you can, you choose not to. I think movies are in an awful state right now, 99% rubbish being released. I'm unhappy with the movie business right now, doesn't mean there aren't a few movies each year that I enjoy. Of course you can say you are happy or unhappy with the genre.

GW2 is the only MMORPG to be released in the past 5 years that I didn't instantly think would go FTP and that was before it was common. Completely garbage has been released lately.

When have we ever seen variety?  I mean aside from better graphics where is this magical variety that we have seen before?

I mean I just don't see it. Just about any genre of gaming has been more about refinement, not about wholesale change in the way a game plays.  RTS games are still RTS, FPS, same, etc. etc ...yada yada yada!

Where does this expectation or belief that MMO's should have some drastic rebirth come from?  I mean even GTA 5 hasn't changed, it has just evolved into something bigger.   MMO's will too, it just won't happen overnight.  But they will still be MMO's and gameplay will be essentially the same, just with a little more depth is the way I see.

But it sure as heck isn't going to be as dramatic as an open world free for all that people seem to think is the next big thing.

Because that just doesn't work.

And yea I am happy enough with the MMO's I play.  When I am not I move on.

FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

well .. i can say it but it means very little.

I enjoy a large number of movies .. avenger, dark knight rises, iron man 3, pacific rim, fast 6 ..... am I unhappy about movies just because long ranger is meh?

The opposite of that. I say potential is more about the features that no-one is asking for because no-one has thought about them. Potential is something that only gets realised when developers sit down and think "what if..?".

When have we ever seen variety?  I mean aside from better graphics where is this magical variety that we have seen before?

When MMOs were young? Ultima Online was vastly different from Meridian 59, which was vastly different from Neverwinter, which was vastly different from Asheron's Call which was vastly different from Dark Age of Camelot which was vastly different from Star Wars Galaxies, which was vastly different from EverQuest, which was vastly different from Anarchy Online, which was vastly different from Planetside.

Almost all those games had similar budget and somewhat similar success. All deemed successful in their own right.

Now, you have ONE kind of AAA MMO, the WoW clone, and most aren't successful.

Now the variety is , WoW in MIddle Earth, WoW in space, WoW with rifts, or WoW with wings?

Thousands of players sharing a virtual, persistent online game environment. It's such an open idea that this genre should be bursting with wonderfully diverse interpretations. It's hard not to remain fascinated by the potential and equally hard - if you have even a little imagination - not to be disappointed by the present reality.

Agreed.  When I first joined the genre back in 2001 there was so much diversity between titles, and I expected each of them to more or less evolve equally into even more amazing representations of a virtual world, somewhat unique in their experience.

What I never expected was the homogenization that arose from the success of WOW to the point there is very little difference between most modern large budget titles once you look past the surface.  (TSW being a notable exception, if only they could have come up with a more creative endgame) Some indies still manage to challenge the imagination, but lack the resources to deliver the dream unfortunately.

So no, I'm not happy with the genre, which is probably why I'm playing a 10+ year old MMORPG that has been reset to it's former glory back in 2003.

I do however, think there's always hope on the horizon, and there are some upcoming titles that appear to present some ideas that I might enjoy so I'll be back in the new game market one day, just not likely anytime in the next year.

I agree, except for the playing an old MMO part. I'm playing FPS and city builders instead.

Nah .. you view is too narrow.

Now you have traditional themepark MMORPGs, MOBAs, instanced combat games like WOT, instanced pve games like Vindictus, online ARPGs, MMO FPS .....

I like now much better than the UO/EQ time.

I have replaced my MMO of choice with a little game called Progress Quest.

Or to put it another way, you have MMORPG, MMOFPS, and a bunch of other non-MMO stuff.

Your view is way too broad. When discussing the MMORPG genre you don't include aRPG, MMOFPS, MOBA etc. Those are completely different genres of games.

The MMORPG genre is in a really bad place atm. Almost every single title released in the past 5 years went free to play in under 2 years time and not by choice.

I'd like to say that I'm not *unhappy* but I have to admit that a lot of the time I feel like I'm nibbling at the edges of other peoples' games rather than playing a game for me.

I'm just not sure if that's a problem with the genre or with me.

No, not really.  To me, feels like the genre has taken steps backward with shallower gameplay and little focus on anything but combat.

I'm not sure if I'm happy with the genre, but I am happy about not having to grind CM to gear up my 2nd job once 2.1 comes out for FFXIV.
