The fault will not be in minimizing the impact class choice has on the game. It will be in allowing every character to potentially level up every skill available across the board. There is not going to be a skill cap, so characters will all begin to blend together as they mature. I feel that individuality will be limited to what you choose to slot for that particular adventure. Not what your character is capable of or what role it was created to fulfill.

Darkfall, with its many mistakes, at least recognized the error of this and tried to correct it. UO and Asheron's Call got it right by introducing a type of skill cap that gently guided players toward archetype characters rather than the ridged systems of class based gameplay.

They are not classes, they are skill sets like a normal game of The Elder Scrolls Skyrim Oblivion and Morrowind.

You can pick and choose skill lines once you pick a skill set. There are no real classes in this game.

actually no.  There are about 100 skills and there are a few that are class specific. Those few are all that separate one class from another. Everything like Heavy/med/light armor, 2h/1h/2x weapons and the like come to us separate of any class restrictions and can be picked up by everyone.

The  classes are the only thing giving any difference to endgame characters who have spread out their range of skills through lateral progression at endgame.

You would think that people who go out of their way to post on a website devoted to MMO coverage and discussion might be able to determine the nature of the class system with a quick search or by simply reading the article in question.

Ugh. I guess they need to bring back the ability to name your own class so that they can boast "we have over a million classes".

4 Classes are not enough at all, me personally, I like to have a unique character, when I travel the plains of Cyrodiil, I wanna use spells, weapons, attacks etc. that I don't see often, only having 4 classes, I'll be seeing the same attacks and stuff consistently. Some things I could see are like classes based off of being in groups, like Clerics/healers, necromancers for people who like to travel the plains solo but like that bit of help, maybe one day integrate cross classes, like a magic archer, where instead the archer using arrows and bolts, they use magic arrows, and like a hardcore battle mage sort of thing where the persons armor and weapons are 100% magic based. Just some suggestions....

They 4 classes, can chose into 3 basic classes, that 4 x 3 (altlesed), beside that all 4 classes can mix there skill build between all the classes skill lines, and fare more skill sets form other areas.

So only 4 classes = NO, many more.

Do I like this, yea. But will it be fun over time, no. As in any other mmo out there with multi class systems, after 1 mounth there will only be a few set ups that works and that all will go for. And after that there will be added multi spec in the game. That will make the players less importen and the game less social - now that any player can become what they whant and what the gruop set up needs, with one clik on a botton.

Your first problem is thinking of them as Classes.

I'd label them as Archetypes, and what you do within those Archetypes is your choice.

1 Class, many skills, endless compilations.

If something is to unbalanced just change that one skill.

You can have predefined paths/classes if they desire, but nothing concrete.

To be honest it really doesn't matter if there are classes or not. What matters is if the player is competent at playing the game with the mechanics available. Usually the loudest criers are the people who are inept, impatient or infantile.

One thing is for sure. No matter how the game is developed there will always be some group who wants it to be different than what it is.

4 classes are not enough imo. I prefer a game with diversity having as many classes as possible. That's why i love games like EQ. But as i understand having many classes the developer needs to balance them out which is really hard work, and i guess ppl dont like hard work.

There are so many various skill lines that class matters little in the end.  From what has been released, classes comprise of 3 skill lines, plus there is racial, weapons (multiple), armor (multiple), guild (multiple), pvp, emperor, vampire (possibly), werewolf (possibly), with more to be added as the game develops.

I would rather have a game with fewer class options that allows me a great deal of customization than a game with many classes and little customization.  ESO lets you build any class into any role you want.  Mage can be a tank in any armor with any weapon, rogue can be a healer with any armor with any weapon, and guess what, you can swap roles with the swap of your weapon set (which also swaps your action bar).

Last I checked balancing more customization options is harder than balancing many classes.  More customization means more possibility to min/max.

Cheers!

I've yet to play an MMO that has a class structure that was as appealing to me as what was available in EQ and EQ II.  Not only did those games have very distinctive classes, but they were so much more than the 3 or 4 button mashing games of today.  Why can't modern games give us all of the utility and fun abilities of the older games?  Why do they insist on focusing primarily on damage and healing?  Non-combat / flavor / silly abilities have become extinct in the modern MMO.

It's not just 4 classes... it is 4 base classes but within those base classes it's like 5 classes within, each with their own skills...

This just seems like a "we have nothing to report" piece.

Well the classes are more loose archetypes rather than doing specific things. Choosing a Dragonkinght(warrior-type) just gives you a specific set of class skills. All classes have access to skills tied only to certain weapons and armor, and there are no restrictions on those for any classes. Its more about general focus. Do you want to cast? If yes, then sorcerer would probably be the best choice. But the important part is that you can still successfully cast as a dragonknight or even a nightblade.

How many classes the game have doesn't really matter in ES games. any class can be anything in ES, if the devs are going the same system in ESO; which by the looks like they are, then there is nothing to worry about. Just choose whatever class you want and as you progress along the game just make your character however you like it to be. i will just wait for more info to be revealed.

i want an open world, no phasing, no instancing.i want meaningful owpvp.i want player driven economy.i want meaningful crafting.i want awesome exploration, a sense of thrill.i want ow housing with a meaningful effect on my entire gameplay experience, not just some instanced crap.i want all of these free of cost, i don't wanna pay you a cent, game devs can eat grass and continue developing game for me.
Seems like that is the current consensus of western mmo players.

I remember when i created a character in Morrowind and had to pick from a bagillion archetypes. Now you have a more modern TES game turned into an mmo and all you get is 4 classes?

It is very good that you can wear any type of armors and use any type of weapons but THAT IS NOT a reason to reduce class archetypes to 4. The fact that there will be classes in the game despite all the flexibility, it means that you can build a specific class and benefit form that class' stats. It needs more classes.

THe more i read about TESO the more i want to stay with the single player side of the franchise.

My endgame begins with character creation and ends with a new mmorpg

I want an mmorpg where pvp matters, my enemies are not my race or class, and community matters.

10/03/13 7:32:21 PM#58

4 classes per faction?  Or, are they saying each faction will have the same 4 classes?  Confused here, I assumed we were following the Dark Age of Camelot model where classes weren't copied between factions.

This will turn into the Rift "classless" system then, where people just played whatever was OP'd until the next patch.  Perhaps I misread?

We are supposed to be getting 3 factions.

Each faction has a set number of classes that are NOT repeated in the other realms (hence immersion, choice, variability, a sense of uniqueness, oh and RPG).

Am I wrong in this?

^^ adding to what I just posted.

Are they saying each REALM has the same The Dragon Knight, Sorcerer, Night Blade, and Templar?  Matt Firor (of Dark Age of Camelot) should know better.  Dark Age of Camelot had three realms too: and some 44 classes and 24 races.  At least half of that was available at release with a staff of 30 employees and as much money as a low end kickstarter.
