You and me both!

Would you like to pull up a rocking chair and yell at the young kids with me?

I'm not grumpy enough for rocking chairs.  I want to be an Obi-wan.

At least you don't want to be an Uncle Owen!

Ah ha ha ha ha ha.......

Ahem. Sorry, had to.

GTA V isn't popular because of its violence. It's popular because it's probably the best open world shooter ever made, with a ton of variety, amazing (for this gen of consoles) graphics and great gameplay.

Ah no, If the game had no violence I can with out a doubt tell you it would fail. Stop lying to yourself....

If it had no violence it wouldn't have gameplay. It's a shooter. You shoot stuff. On the other hand, if GTA5 had normal shooter violence, it'd still sell like hotcakes.

My point was that games with the 18+ rating are the ones selling like hot cakes.  COD AND BF4 are also 18+ and many more but the 3 above dominate the gaming industry.

MMORPGS have a lot of catching up....

COD: Black Ops 2, BF3 and GTA5 are all rated M by ESRB, which is 16+ and the standard rating for shooters. If they were R (18+) rated, many retailers would refuse to sell them in the US, which is the reason why ESRB ratings are important.

COD and BF3 aren't particularly violent. They've got blood and some gore, but we had much more violent stuff in the 90s.

Rated M is 17+... seems we both were wrong.

Do please continue telling us how ultra violent games are the future and how they're the best sold evah.

The OP needs a reality check because he/she seems to be living in a certain demographic and is unable to fathom that that demographic isn't that big (it isn't small mind you but nor is it the majority).

Looks like the money talks. But yeah keep down playing 1 billion in 3 days.... good on yah lol.

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all times and even caused particularly interesting individuals to commit suicide, does that mean that Avatar-like movies are all that's left in the future? 4 years have proven otherwise.

As for 1 billion in 3 days, yeah, it's also the most expensive game ever made and I am willing to bet it had the most expensive marketing campaign for a game ever as well. Time will tell if sales will keep up or if its main demographic (around 25-30 million people, if previous series game sales are to be believed) has shrunk. If everything holds and their marketing was spot on then the game will hit about 2.5-3 bil USD if everyone rushes to buy the game at full price. Pound for pound it looks good but that's under ideal conditions, my guess is the game will make a good profit but sales will taper off in about 2-3 weeks as saturation is reached amongst die hard fans and casual fans and then you'll see some spurts during sales. 30 million copies would be allot if it sells that much in the end but it's still not enough to make your point ^^ as both a italian plumber by the name of Mario ( over 10 million more copies sold on the first super marios game) and Wii sports ( over 80 million copies) beat it hands down.

mario cart (2008) being the highest grossing nintendo game  to date sales has made 1.4 million.  GTA 5 in 3 days over a billion.... Not to mention the game cost 250 mill. even with  marketing it already made a profit.

Its a trend in gaming like it or not numbers are number.

And yes the top movies released since have had avatar quality graphics.

But hey im not here to argue just stating the trend I have seen.

Sure, it's the biggest financial success in entertainment history, but it's NOT just because of the violence. Other publishers may try to tap into that market by trying to create their own game in the style of the GTA series, but they will likely fail because they don't have Rockstar. Rockstar makes great games. They take their time on them, they never flood the market with their stuff (i.e. Ubisoft and annual Assassin's Creed games), and Take-Two allows them to spend big on both development and marketing. People know that open-world action games by Rockstar San Diego are going to be great games. Shocking violence is definitely a big part of the series' history, and that may be why teens were so into the earliest games. But those teens are now in their 30s, and there's nothing wrong with them enjoying a great game with a ton of variety and content akin to anything you'd watch on HBO.

I agree on the point that the game allows freedom but I do disagree on that people play only for the open world ect. You play the game as a criminal, You kill innocent people. Blow up cop cars ect. You are right on the story and flow and how they created their world, its a quality game.

I mean If I had a kid I wouldnt let him play this game would you? Unless he was a teenager that is.

Yes, I also agree its a just a game, I guess the post was to reinforce that realistic non-pg gaming is on a rise.  IMO I feel its a good thing, It will pull more adults into gaming.

Sept that there is no one to pull, in the current enviroment. Most Kids that play games, turn into Adults that play games. as i said in my brick above. More people are playing games than ever before. most of them adults, kids arent reaching a certian age and putting down the controlers anymore.

Because i can.

Nope, merely twisting words to make your own opinion valid. GTA V is the fastest selling game to date, correct, that speaks to awareness of the title, marketing behind it, not popularity by definition though GTA is a popular series it is still not as popular as some of the classics and some of the non-violent casual games of this era and unlike those GTA 5's broad appeal will be gone within a year and considering the, probable, lack of modding support it won't even have Skyrim's longevity in the news.

Bort bort bort!

I find it amusing that, as games in general become more violent, movies are for the most part heading in the exact opposite direction. There are very few 'hard R' action films being made anymore, and the violent films of yesteryear are being remade into PG-13 CGI kiddie crap (see Robocrap... err, cop 2014).

Oh, and I'm going to plug both Dredd and The Raid: Redemption. Both are fantastic examples of how proper action films should be done, and are quite deserving of a place on any action fan's DVD / Blu-ray shelf.

Anyway, please continue.

I don't get that whole franchise.   Doesn't appeal to me in the least.   The only reason I think people like it is because they can just do crazy stuff in it.

Another score for the open world game.

The world sim with the game built around it just keeps on having success after success.

Not bad for gameplay made for a tiny audience.

It was great back when it was multiplayer. I gave up on it when they started locking you out of parts of the city until you completed the content. But back in the day we had some fun with this game.

The future of gaming will be listed in Rated R+.

Earth to OP, do you not remember classics like: Wolfenstien, Doom, Quake, Soldier of Fortune, and Mortal Kombat? Gaming has been ultra violent for decades.

Completely ridiculous statement.  Its like you just fell off the turnip truck Ray!

How many copies did they sell to guys hoping to be the first to find the hidden easter egg (bow chicka wow wow) before Mom does?

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Lets imagine I make a new topic and say "Driving a car in game, the future of gaming"... what? You can drive a car in GTA V and they earned 1 billion already!

Pulling out this one factor from the bottom of the list is like saying that the game was successful because you can ride a car in it.... it just so happened that one of the best selling games is also violent one, prove relation.

Take into account the violent/non violent games ratio, player demography and show some numbers in the last few years to prove your point. Such big claim and no effort to back it up...

Even if you prove GTA V was bought because people like blood, prove that it was different two years ago...

Think you missed the part I now highlighted red for you. So obviously in a shooter there will be voilence.

And you topic is already past/present and most likely the future.

[mod edit] you claiming that ultra violence is ultra popular all of a sudden when we've been butchering people (or seeing people get pulled apart, slaughtered, etc) in quite novel ways for over a decade ( Carmageddon comes to mind, there's also quite a few scenes in Area 51 particularly one where you watch some aliens vivisect a human being, then there the entire Aliens vs Predator series of games, Doom series, Quake series, Resident Evil, the new wave realistic combat games like Chivalry, Jedi Knight series where certain amounts of dismemberment were possible, further modded in, The Elder Scrolls had it so bad in terms of creative ways people found to murder their fellows in-game that Skyrim actually has unkillable children... you kinda have to thing who did what to who in Oblivion and in general the amount of gore in games has been at a certain level which has remained constant for as long as I've been throwing Timmys down wells).

You and me both!

Would you like to pull up a rocking chair and yell at the young kids with me?

I'm not grumpy enough for rocking chairs.  I want to be an Obi-wan.

We humans as a species love violence.

Always have....  Always will....
