I would rather play GW2,

Both games are dull, but Rift is a much more balanced game, and there is enough there to keep someone interested beyond a few months, unlike GW2.

Still, as posters up above have said, there seems to be that missing "something" to make the game truly great.  IMO, that would be world design.  The zones are just so bland and dull, and the boring combat doesn't help.

One thing, and maybe the only thing, I do respect out GW2 is the world design.  It's a fantastic looking world.  If we could combine the world design/environment of GW2 with pretty much everything else about Rift, we'd have a near-perfect themepark game.

The only things I would want GW2 to borrow from Rift are the Soul system, landscape-changing invasions, mounts, and housing.

Maybe the community is just moving past this era, 2 raids, 2 dungeons does not sound very appealing to me.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone always thinks I hate on Rift, but the truth is there is just something missing to put it over the top. It's like a good steak that just isn't seasoned right. It's good, but it's missing that one little thing to make it great.

I have been playing a bit because I get to tank dungeons and ... my main problem is that characters are so gray and vague.

from the 'tank zoom distance' which for me is not very far, just enough to see loose mobs etc...I cant tell who is a male or female, who's what race etc. I just have that feeling of not being able to identify with the character's traits. he's gray and uninteresting. I'll google a rift screenshot vs a wow screenshot.

Basically I guess the theme of the game is not at the same level of "high/low/med fantasy" as the graphics are. It feels...displaced a bit. I know i'm slipping into the cartoony vs realistic graphics but rift to me doesnt feel cartoony enough.

My interest in this game is starting to wane.  I'm fighting it, but I don't know how much longer I will last.  I'm not sure what they could do to keep my interest.

I like some aspects of the store.  I've purchased additional professions and leveled them up.  I wish the clothing packs were cheaper.  This patch, the most I got out of it was a new hair style.  And they should have made the hairstyles you purchase equipable from a character tab.

Maybe my dimension and building my dream house is all I have left to keep me going.  I don't like rerolling alts and I am not a min maxer.  It's probably time to find a new mmo but I don't have the energy at the moment.

One of the big turn offs for me was the lack of personality/charm in everything. Everything was done well for the most part, but Rift felt like such a 'paint by numbers' fantasy.

Exactly.  And part of the problem is the way they created the game itself.  Games like WoW and GW2 and even FFXIV...they started from an empty plate.  And the developers brainstormed "what can we do to make a great MMO".  And these three games, like them or not, have their own charm and personality.

Rift, on the other hand, didnt start as a blank plate.  It started as WoW.  And the developers thought 'how can we make WoW better?".  And the result is what should be a better game than WoW, but isn't.  And i would imagine part of that is because it has to be more engaging to make your own game, as opposed to a redo of someone else's.

.......but it seems there's a spark that's just not there. And to me it's a pity, as Trion have gained a a good reputation.

It may just be that if people want to play a wow type game - they'll play wow. What that says about ffxiv's longevity?

Agree.

Despite i m an active RIFT player and i find it as an excellent themepark game,  i think it has 3 major drawbacks.

1. The client performance. Its, imo, one of the worst clients, for such a good game, in the market.

2. It feels really soulless. Despite it has almost everything someone asks from a themepark mmo, it lacks in emotion. No epic feeling at all.

3. WoW. People prefer to play WoW, if they are to choose between WoW and some other WoW clone themepark mmo. RIFT is clearly one of them. Almost only ppl (like me) who don't want to pay sub anymore for games, prefer RIFT than WoW.

Even though I have been playing Rift since it has launched, I have only been playing this long because nothing else has kept my attention. I was originally using Rift as a filler for SWTOR and then GW2 but ended up going back to Rift after being disappointed with those two. While it isn't my ideal game (no themepark will ever be) and one that I have wanted to stop playing since late 2011, I will be stuck here being jaded and bitter until something better comes along.

First quarter of 2013 might be promising, but the hype train has let me and many others down too many times to get too excited about upcoming releases.

I think it's the opposite.  On the surface, the game is generic and badly designed.  The mechanics of the game however, are pretty standard like WoW, but WoW has better animations, npcs, lore, sound effects, etc.

Character models, animations, lore,  sound effects, npcs, etc..  Most of this stuff was unappealing to me, and for many others.

I really enjoyed my time in rift. But ultimately, I left for similar issues you are experiencing now. I took crafting as far as I wanted to go. I'm not a fan of crafting recipes and resources bound to raid drops. The stuff I could make as a pure crafter...well...two months after storm legion had been out, I could barely give it away.

so I worked on my treehouse. Finished that and felt satisfied with my time in rift and cancelled.

I absolutely loved RiFT having played since launch but since it's went F2P I've completely lost interest in it. For me regardless of item level the fact you can buy gear in the store is a pretty big part of why I no longer play and wont in the future.

And this is the most silly reason to quit. The gear you are talking about is entry level gear which is useless and would be replaced pretty quick and can be obtained while playing the game. You make it sound as if they are selling top tier gear in shop.

I think most people who don't have a personal slight against Blizzard or aren't freeloaders would.   The raids are better, the content is better, the world is more cohesive, the classes have soul, the side activities are more far enjoyable.   There really is nothing that Rift offers that WoW doesn't do better. Well except housing since WoW doesnt offer it, but pretty much all of SoEs games offer far better housing than Rift if that is your thing.   For the record, I am an Everquest fanboy rather than a WoW one, but even I can see that WoW wins that round hands down.

WoWs raids are a joke now.
Rift has the most challenging and difficult raids right now for large guilds

SoE better housing -no way, not even close.

WoW has a smoother engine, but imo its aged badly.

I beta'd Rift and played it from launch for about 6-7 months.  I quit because I just got bored.  I'm not a raider, never have and never will be.  I find raiding to be a really bad excuse for end game content.  I like to do dungeons though.  I also like pvp a lot, bg's and owpvp.  Rift just felt dead on the inside.  It was fun because of the soul combos you could do, but even that started to get bad after Trion started nerfing the crap out of hybrid builds.

I think the feeling dead aspect probably comes from the fact the entire game and the world had a similar color pallet which was a dark, dull theme.  And the character models were just so plain, all were humans but different colors.  There was nothing in the game that really made me laugh or get hooked.

So after Trion nerfed the bejesus out of my favorite specs and kept piling on more pvp levels and gear sets I quit because I can't stand gear treadmills, especially at the super fast pace Trion was out dating all their gear with lighting speed.

Playing: Smite
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing really, though Black Desert looks pretty amazing so far.

Housing in EQ2 and Vanguard are both vastly superior to Rift.

Regarding the raids and content, I didnt find either game challenging, but WoW had more interesting encounters and combat mechanics.

Rift has been my go-to-game since it launched. Nothing has managed to grab my attention enough to pull me away for long. I've tried SWTOR, TSW, GW2 and most recently FFXIV ARR (which after about 83 hours, I'm starting to get tired of that, and end up playing Rift instead, as it's just not different  enough for me). I think as far as themepark MMO's go, Rift is top notch (not to mention having an amazing F2P model).

I love the class diversity with the 9 (IIRC) souls per class and how each one does something a little different. Ranged warriors, melee mages, rogue tanks, and many more different things you can do by putting together 3 souls per role. Of course, end game is designed around raid gear progression like most themepark games. But there's all the side activities like looking for collectibles, achievement hunting for titles and other rewards, all the different kinds of rifts, chronicles, crafting, and dimensions (which has been a MASSIVE time/platinum sink for me). I don't know, Rift just does it for me (aside from PvP. Nothing Since DAoC has felt good to me in terms of PvP). I get into the story, the gameplay, and not to mention having a good and active guild always helps.

As far as 2.4 goes, looking forward to getting to do the new dungeon as it sounds super interesting, as well as the new chronicle. Don't care so much about the raids though. Looking forward to 3.0, as the whole atlantis-esque city idea sounds cool.

WoW has a smoother engine, but imo its aged badly.

Come on now...

Because LFR is easy does not mean heroic raiding is.  Heroic raiding in WoW is generally tougher than Rift raiding.  Even Akylios, Rift's crowning achievement, was on a similar difficulty level as WoW's top boss at the time, heroic ragnaros.  Its just that much less guilds clear the Rift stuff and it sometimes takes them longer, but thats because the Rift talent pool is significantly smaller, the guilds havent been working together as long, and the top guilds and raiders leave the game all the time.

And the guy who said all SoE games have better housing than Rift was a bit silly, but Rift's housing is based off of, and inferior too, EQ2.  Much of the reason why its inferior is because EQ's housing has 8 years on Rift's (there is just simply far more options for EQ2 because of this).  Both games have excellent housing.  EQ1 and VG have good housing (and VG gets extra points for being player built and open world), but EQ2 and Rift offer far more customization.  SWG housing was also amazing.
