I was probably dreaming.. but i could swear i read or heard that TESO was going to be free-form builds where you can pick and choose what skills you train and use, you know like Skyrim. Now Im seeing info about  CLASSES. To be honest i havent been following the game all that closely but i couldve sworn there werent gonna be classes.

did I dream this or did things change?

Yes there are classes, but its a base. The game is completely skill based, so you can mix and match and be for example a mage wearing heavy armor, or a thief carring a two handed axe...you have complete freedom to build your character as you seem fit. It is not identical to Skyrim at the very start, but the end result is almost identical.

thanks for those links. So the free form only applies to armor and weapons? I cant be a rogue who can cast spells or a fighter who can who can sneak/pick locks, right?

The class you choose just sets a very basic general direction for your development. The armor, weapons and skills you use are totally up to you.  You will level all of these things in the same manner as you did in Skyrim, the more you use a certain weapon, armor or skill will increase your proficiency with it.

hmm, ok. I dont understand the need for classes if it truly is free form. is it only for story purposes, maybe?

Not sure what the NDA is on this, but I played it at Pax Prime so I'll go ahead and say it is not truly free form. Each one of the basic classes has specific skills unlocked under that class. However, all classes have access to all three sets of armor and access to all the different types of weapons. This means each class can unlock all the shared weapon attacks and passives.

Just did some searches and found this http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Templar, the Skill Lines are the Templar (class) specific attacks and passives. Melee and short range attacks, holy/fire attacks, and heals would be the Templars 3 skill lines. You may be able to get similar skills by using a restorative staff or 2 handed melee weapon, but those won't quite be the same.

Yes you can be a rogue that casts spells and a fighter that can sneak.

Here, read this from this site. It gives a very good explanation of all of the variations this game is offering. Its a little different from Skyrim, but you can have countless possibilities based on weapon, armor, class, guild, race, etc.

The 3 class ability streams for every class in ESO use spells. Sneaking and lock picking is not class restricted. In addition to the abilities associated with weapons,  shield and armor--which anyone can use, there will be ability streams that come form the Mage's, Companions, Thieves and Dark Brotherhood guilds. There will be racial skils, werewolf skills, vampire skills, Cyrodiil PVP skills.

The only ones that aren't available to everyone are the class skills. It's not 100% freeform like in The Secret World. It's more like 75% freeform but the initial class choice does matter a bit since some of the class skills are very, very useful.

My biggest pet peeve, is that all things magic related are bound to the classes... sure there are like 20 skill trees available for all classes..... but all magic is in the 3 class specific skilltrees each of the 4 classes gets... So its much less free then you might expect...

The opposite, it  think it might feel very very restricted in the end for ES fans...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Magic isn't restricted by class tho, you get magic from the Mages/Undaunted guild skill lines, and the destruction staffs give you a different set of spells depending on what element the staff is, so theres at least 3 avenues available to everyone regardless of class

There are four(4) starting classes-you may as well call them starting points:

Dragon Knight: uses Heavy Armour+Alteration+preferably a Shield to "Tank". Tanking start point.
Nightblade: uses Medium Armour(Leather Armours etc), has immediate access to sneaking and uses dual wield/Marksman in conjuction with Illusion to be sneaky. Prolly MDPS starting point.
Sorceror(or Sorcerer-who knows those things?) is your typical, well, Sorceror. Destruction+Conjuration+prolly some bits from Alteration and Illusion as well to Act as a typical CC RDPS of yore. RDPS starting point. Uses Light armour(basically nothing at all! Just some robes).
Templar: uses Restoration, Alteration, Mysticism and prolly some bits of Illusion to Heal, Support and CC. Wears ??? Armour(well, if we are judging by the name-Heavy, but if we're judging by specialisation-Light-lol @ that juxtaposition!). Heal/Support starting point.

But the thing is, we don't know what exactly those "classes" are going to give you. If I'm right(and I hope that I am-for the sake of this game), they'll give you some bonuses to their starting skills, different starting equipment and prolly some sort of specialisation later on-say when you're morphing spells, you get an additional option to morph the Shield Spell if you're Templar, but if you're Sorceror, you can't morph that, but the Flame cloak instead.

Also, from the TES looking point(prev one was from the MMO looking point):

Just pick whatever sounds nice(or whose starting bonuses/abilities/equipment you fancy the most). And branch out-the typical TES way. Also:

Dragon Knight: leads to all sorts of combat/magic oriented classes. Think of the Crusader, of the Battlemage or of the Spellsword. If you liked any of those in prev TES games, you should start as a DK. Defensive Combat starting point.
Nightblade: self explanatory because it actually exists within TES lore. But I'll add all the following classes as benefits when choosing your class: the Agent and the Witch Hunter. Offensive Combat/Stealth starting point.
Sorceror: also exists in TES. I'll just add the Mage here. Offensive Magic starting point(Illusion/Destro yah?).
Templar: is what you would get if you mixed the Knight and the Healer. Or either of those-idk. Basically, if you always wanted to Support someone in TES and/or liked the schools of Restoration/Mysticism/Alteration mixed with the Sword n board(most likely)-this is the class for you! Good samaritan starting point/Defensive Magic.

So all the following classes fall under the:

DK-Crusader, Battlemage, Spellsword, Scout and Warrior.
NB: Nightblade, Assassin, Witch Hunter, Thief, Acrobat, Barbarian, Agent, Archer and Rogue.
Sorc: Sorceror, mage and that's it lol! But you could take any Magic specialised class and fit it into the Sorceror.
Templar: Healer, Knight, Pilgrim, Monk and Bard. In other words all the group classes yeah?

That's basically it. What I was able to understand from various interviews and other means. It should serve you well...

Take care!

I like your thinking.  I hope at least some of these ideas are in the final product.  I want to be a Battlemage and/or Spellblade.  Also an assassin ;-)

Any skill is open.  The base classes just give you a skill chain only that class has; you don't  have to use it or you can if you want a bit of  class uniqueness.

Remember that UO technically had classes like this, or rather optional templates. I'm find with it, especially if they have some sort of "Custom" Choice like I expect they could.

Not really mate.  The classes have 3 skill lines specific to them.  The armor/weapons/guilds/and a few other skill trees are independent of class.  You can be a dragon knight in light armor with a healing staff, or a sorcerer in Heavy armor who uses a shield.  Your class has some benefits towards a particular role, but any class can play any role, use any weapon, use any armor, etc...  Class is a starting point, but not necessarily for role.

Cheers!
