OP  8/26/13 9:58:42 AM#1

So I been hearing a lot of complaining about the global cooldown and how it feels slow.

Here is a good way of seeing the global cooldown system:

1.) All final fantasy games for console were turn based. The global cooldown makes you have to think for that 1.5 seconds to strategize your next move. It's a mix of turn based sort of with real time.

2.) Today on my gladiator, Level 12, I finally figured out how to AoE tank. It came down to me not using the right abilities per GCD.

3.) As you level up your primary and other classes, the games combat gets more and more complex because you keep getting more "strategic" option for your GCD.

4.) Some abilities aren't even on the GCD.

After thinking about this, I actually enjoy the combat system.

Ok, whatever.

I've been playing MMORPGs obsessively since EverQuest.  There has never been a GCD this ridiculous.  There has never been a need for a GCD this ridiculous.  I have a low opinion of modern MMORPG players in general but I don't think that they're all stupid enough or slow enough to warrant something this silly.

I hope....and there is a lot of things I hope get better with time with this game...that as you go up in level and the +skill/spell speed stuff is more common, that you eventually get down to something closer to the more typical 1-1.5s GCDs of normal MMORPGs, because I don't really want to play the kindergarten version for dummies forever.

I'm hoping this is just part of their treating MMORPG players and gamers like complete and total idiots and dumbing the game down to levels even the panda would scoff at and that the training wheels come off at some point.

C'mon man, the classes in this game are simplistic.  There is very little mental agility needed to figure out which of your very few skills to use in very generic and routine battles.  Is anybody REALLY using that 2.5s for intense strategizing on the fly?  I freaking hope not.

I'm just glad the "you can't do anything until you're off GDC" beep the game makes is very subtle because I probably activate it 10-20x spamming keys trying to make my character do something.  I want to watch the game...not watch my hotbar for 2.5s at a time waiting for something to be doable.

This for me is the biggest problem with such a long GCD.  It's well outside the norm.  It is a deterent to seamless play.  It hinders watching the beautiful game.  It crushes years and years of timing developed for games that usually have a 1.5s GCD.

It's something they did to pace out and extend combat so that lesser players could handle it easier.  Except, there are no players that need this!  They have designed a system for people who don't exist.  Newborn don't play video games.

I think as the new game shine and smell wear off that things like this are going to get a bit more criticism.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

I hope that it speeds up not a big fan of the 2.5s GCD. Right now the only thing that really bugs me is the tab targeting. It has to be the worst I've ever seen. I'll target everything around me before I get the mob I want and the mob is right in front of me.

You sir, don't know the game.  I'm also a little surprised you mentioned that you've been playing since EverQuest.  If so, you have not played many games.

1) The GCD begins upon skill activation, not completion.  A lot of cast spells have a cast time that matches very closely to the GCD to allow spam of the skill.  The GCD exists to prevent players from ripping off 3 DoTs in quick succession and then using Bane to transfer it to all nearby mobs.  That would be extremely OP.

2) If you are a Scholar, yes - you are using that 2.5s to strategize.  You either have to move/re-position, review your pet CDs, review your party's HP (determines if next is AoE heal or single target), give orders (if you aren't using VOIP), ect.

3) I came from Age of Wushu, where the GCD was far more dramatic.  It wasn't a major issue there either.

4) I literally didn't even notice it when I ran the level 27 instance.  As it stands now, I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the skills and options I have as a Scholar.

5) You don't want to spam skills anyway, if only for simple TP/MP management.  Skill spam is *bad play*.  The GCD is almost a crutch that forces players to be more effective with their skill management.

EDIT:

In regards to tab targeting, it's designed to pick the mob at optimal range.  Thus, if you are a ranged caster it will choose the mob that is closest to the max range of your skill.  It's great for passive enemies, not so great for aggressive enemies.

In defense of the basics of what the other guy is saying, that just made it sound worse to be honest. So instead of just having slow combat due to a cool down, you also have slow combat because so many skills take so long to activate?

There is a reason MMOs have been moving towards faster, less restrictive, combat. It makes the game more exciting and fun instead of slow and boring.

The combat is a bit slow, almost turn based - if you wish to call it that.  As a fan of the FF franchise, that feel of game is rather familiar to me.  I don't mind it (afterall, I played Atlantica as top tier player for nearly a year).

Once you get higher and mobs start casting some really big skills, you'll be moving around quite a bit.  Finding a flow between escaping damage and staying in range of your team is integral to the feel of combat in this game.

Early on, you pretty much stand there and cast.  I agree that during that period, combat is slow and boring.

In short, you need the GCD for skill balance.  It does get shorter as you level (although not a TON yet).  Not all skills have a GCD or cooldown - usually ones that require separate stacks of a buff to use.  In combat, you'll find that you move around a lot which brings you closer to using instant cast spells instead of casting spells.  If you cast, it generally takes up the time of the GCD.  Both of those can be buffed by other players.

"Get your FPS out of my MMORPG" - Timetrapper (me)

8/26/13 11:13:56 AM#7

The Final Fantasy series is based in, and has its roots in console turned based role playing games.  So please don't try to take 20 years of history and change their  global cooldown to speed things up to match something that we see in every other game.

People who play Final Fantasy games want a global cooldown similar to what they see in every other Final Fantasy game.  Why not?  The game is well-done and the 2.5 GCD is fine.  I don't like the argument of, if you don't like it go play something else, so what I'm saying is, this series has a history of using turned based combat and is using its roots when it made the game.

I'm glad it didn't betray its roots in order to suit today's fans, twitch gamers, fps gamers, etc.  These are all markets that most MMO creators want to grab, so they adjust their game's combat to try and grab fans in different markets and tastes.

But remember, all these other MMO games with faster combat either have no history or very little rpg history so they can do what they like without completely changing the dynamic of their games traditional feel.

So keep the combat the way it is, its worked the past 20 years and this game has tons of fans and a big playerbase who plays FF based off the fun they had with all the other games.

There's still plenty of twitch involved with animation canceling.

I was iffy about the cooldown system until I went into my first group instances.  As a Conjurer I definitely feel like part of what makes the combat interesting is the strategy mentioned in the OP.  Since I can do more than just heal for the party, that long GCD and the way the skills fit together see me doing a lot more than just looking at hotbars.  Learning when I have time to squeeze in damaging spells, finding a rhythm and anticipating spike damage along with moving at opportune times makes the combat more interesting than most of the tab targeting games I have played at the start.  And that's with pure CNJ.  If I had a few cross-class skills to bring to the table, I'm sure there would be even more decisions to be made.

I can see, however, how some people wouldn't like it, particularly if they're used to more action-packed games like TERA, for instance.

Logic be damned!

8/26/13 11:28:42 AM#10

I too have been playing MMOs for a very long time, 13+ years back to UO pre-Trammel.. apparently I need to preface what I say with this info in this thread...

... but GCD has never felt slow or been a source of frustration for me in this game.

I've played (in beta) on both PS3 and PC, and am now playing exclusively on PS3.

Primarily been playing CNJ and LNC.

Solo, group...

Only time it barely has mattered to me is in FATEs trying to tag mobs - as with a lot of people present the mobs die so quick you can barely get an attack in.

Healing on CNJ feels great at low levels, kind of like CATA WoW where you couldn't spam heal without running out of mana, you had to conserve and time things properly, not keep everyone "topped off" at all time.

LNC at low level has a pretty solid rotation + buff/debuff priority system, dependent on if you're behind mob or not. Keep buffs up, rotate for max damage, keep debuff up. Helps to pick up ACH +crit buff attack.

Now Playing: D3:RoS, Watch Dogs
Looking Towards: Destiny

I agree that the tab targeting sucks in this game do much do that I find it easier to just use the keypad to walk and left click the mob I want to attack

Freeloading mooches are the scourge of the gaming community.

I keep wanting to be intrigued by this game. Yet I keep reading more and more that makes me think no way. I will probably in the long run pick it up just for the sake of self curiosity.

Sigh EQN is just so far away.

You are turned off by complaints by people that barely put any time in the game and have a cursory - at best - knowledge of the game?

Dude, either put up or shut up.  All of your posts here seem to be designed to concern troll.  It's tiresome.
