FFXIV is awesome because they don't need to reinvent the wheel.

People who want the MMO genre reinvented with action combat and FPS mechanics are not true MMO fans. They are just gamers who want an open world game. MMO's need to stay true to their MMO roots.

The reason is simple.

Lately there's been an uptrend of people who seem to feel threatened by the paradigm of MMOs moving away from what it originally was. There's a group of people who want to play more of what they already had.

FF basically does a good job of making you feel like you're playing a new game, when in reality it's just more of the same. It's a comfortable game, with an IP that a lot of us grew up on. That's why people are excited.

You do realize, with that logic; you're pretty much forfeiting your right to ever complain that MMOs are 'stangnant', 'all clones', 'lack innovation', etc. You're basically signing off any & all innovation because you liked the first taste you got, and don't want to believe there's anything equally good or better.

It's akin to someone swearing off cars, because they grew up riding horses, and then saying that people who drive cars are not 'true' racing fans. You'll never get anything better if you don't open change. And you don't get change if you're completely against innovation. Unfortunately, this means being open minded enough to accept things trying to be different.

Why does everyone always think that every single game out there has to appeal to their personal taste?

Not every single game out there is made for YOU to play.

This game appeals to two types of players:

1) The kind of player that always dreamed of becoming a part of the classic FFverse

2) The kind of player who simply wants a polished, beautiful, decent classic mmorpg.

If you are not one of those two types of players, then i truly wish you the best in your quest to find the perfect game that meets your interests, but i found mine,  and it´s name is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

( And when i feel like some fun, flashy button mashing i play Phantasy Star Online 2 <3 )

You'd think by now, people would realize that different people enjoy different things for different reasons, and they will often not align with everyone else's; that liking or disliking something doesn't make one's opinion "right", nor anyone else's "wrong".

Imagine how much better conversations could become if more people would catch on to this simple and obvious fact.

Also, can we stop using "the year" as some kind of qualifier for "what a MMO should or shouldn't have"? Please? It's not a good argument, at all. There's absolutely zero basis for it, outside of someone's own personal preferences. It's just another way people attempt to assert their own preferences as "divine dogma".

Gameplay mechanics are gameplay mechanics. Graphic styles are simply graphic styles. Revenue models are just revenue models.  Each is chosen based on what works best for the intended game a developer is creating. If you don't like a given choice, then you simply don't like it. If you prefer something else, then you simply prefer something else. Whether it's "2013", "2010", "2005", or "2050" makes absolutely no difference.

Think of how interesting conversations on these forums could be if people stopped filling their posts with over-used and poorly thought out "canned arguments" to dismiss any opinion different than their own.

Take note of the ones feverishly defending the game. Check back 3+ months after launch if they're even still playing the game.

Then we'll see how old school worked out for them.

its a simple answer, really.  FFXIV has  the elements of  the type of MMO that I enjoy playing. (Funny concept, I know)

It's a quality mmo that is p2p. That is why I am playing. I am done with f2p games. The awesome crafting doesn't hurt either

I had to laugh at this comment.  I think the world is still waiting on a successful MMO that represents the "new School."  And don't bother saying GW2... just a bunch of kids zergin around a map (like toddlers playing soccer) with no skill or concept of group dynamics.  Simple fact, the "Old School" MMO style is THE  most successful variant of the genre - look at simple player numbers for proof.

OP drops thread that is highly debated.

OP is no where to be found.

Thread now seems kinda pointless.

Lets talk about how cute Moogles are.

Anyone ever wonder about what that ball on top of their head DOES?  I think its like some sort of telepathic communications appendage.

FF basically does a good job of making you feel like you're playing a new game, when in reality it's just more of the same. It's a comfortable game, with an IP that a lot of us grew up on. That's why people are excited.

Or, you know.... maybe they're excited because they've had a chance to play the game and actually genuinely enjoy it?

Maybe there's something in the style, the world-design, the lore, the implementation of various activities, etc. that they enjoy, and haven't been able to find in other MMOs they've tried? Or, they've found something similar, but they find ARR does it better for them?

Maybe it has nothing to do with them "being tricked into believing it's a new game", but simply because they find it fun?

Maybe it has everything to do with people actually, you know, actually enjoying themepark type MMOs to begin with?

There are people trying this game who say, flat out, they've never followed the FF series. There's no pulling on strings of nostalgia for them. No "comfort of a familiar IP". They're playing because they enjoy the game for what it is.

In case you haven't noticed (or have been ignoring them), there's been many people who've said, flat out, that ARR is very clearly modeled after the traditional themepark model, and that they're okay with that, because they feel it's very well done.

Tab Targeting, Sandbox vs. Themepark, Stylized vs. Realistic graphics, and so on... those things are not "all important" factors for everyone. Many people simply play a game because they enjoy it, whatever it is, however it's set up.

There are myriad different reasons why people would choose to play and find they enjoy this game. Your closing pseudo-intellectual attempt to squeeze them all into a tidy little box only demonstrates a degree of willful ignorance on your part. Either that, or it truly never occurred to you that people like all kinds of things, for all kinds of different reasons.

How does it effect you?

Do you some how get some sort of satisfaction over watching people be wrong?

Hmm it just really seems like you are rooting for games to fail, which is a negative attitude to have...

You should really try to be more positive and friendly... Will we all be playing FFXIV in 3 months?   Well I can tell you this game has had more positive reactions than any MMO in my memory, and I've been playing them since I was 12, and I'm 28.

If you don't like something being successful I suggest you just ignore it.

Depends on how their attitude was. It could either be yes or no.

True, even with things I like I tend to be more..."what if?" instead of being overly positive. It's helped me a lot so far and kept me more grounded.

The problem is that everybody is looking for an MMORPG that caters to them specifically, while practically every MMORPG released in the past eight years is trying to appear to everybody. Trying to please everyone doesn't work in real life, and it doesn't work in MMORPGs.

Let's look at FFXIV, for example. Here's my opinion concerning the demographics it's trying to appeal to.

  1. Final Fantasy fans
  2. Hardcore MMORPG players (raids, HNMs, etc)
  3. Casual MMORPG players (fast quest-based leveling, duty finder, controller-friendly,etc)
  4. PVPers
  5. PVEers
  6. Crafters
Take a look at that. That's basically every MMORPG facet in current existence. Let's compare that to say, Eve Online. It seems to try to appeal to:
  1. PVPers
  2. Crafters
  3. Weekend CEOs.
A much more concise list, as you can see. It's worth noting that both games have much more that they offer than listed above. But I feel their core is what is listed above. And that's the problem. 95% of the games are going to the FFXIV route of trying to please everyone. But very few are going the Eve route. The only one I can actually think of offhand is Darkfall.

In short, you'll continue to see these kinds of complains until more companies start taking risks instead of building safe McMMOs.

No games out there have content for more then 3 months. Of course casuals and hardcores could stay longer. One plays less and the other plays for the ultimate progress. And the rest, which is the majority, is somewhere between casuals and hardcores, who play 30+ hours a week. That is why people are changing mmo's constantly. Many will leave after a period and some others (not that many) will start playing. Eventually the community will settle and population stabilizes.

What I'm saying is that 3 months is actually a success.

Unless you get something related to your guild or friends (pvp ranking, progressive raiding etc) you could stop playing the game no matter what. It is the same for the mass-community driven games ala eve online and darkfall. What keeps you playing is the people and the environment around you.

This why I can not figure out GW2. It does not offer enough as it is made out to be. But somehow, they say that the game is growing. With B2P, the game would seem more popular then it really is. That is for sure. Because people tend to log in every two weeks or so will count as active players.

Depends on how their attitude was. It could either be yes or no.   That is concerning, you shouldn't get satisfaction out of watching others fail.   :-(

Hmm it just really seems like you are rooting for games to fail, which is a negative attitude to have...

I don't see it that way.   Your words of "lets see whos still playing who are so fanatical now" or something like that seem really quite... negative... Which is why that is the conclusion I drew.

You should really try to be more positive and friendly... Will we all be playing FFXIV in 3 months?   Well I can tell you this game has had more positive reactions than any MMO in my memory, and I've been playing them since I was 12, and I'm 28.

True, even with things I like I tend to be more..."what if?" instead of being overly positive. It's helped me a lot so far and kept me more grounded.    Being grounded in reality has no place in an MMO. Not in speculation for its success, and certainly not in it's excitement level.  Allowing yourself to get caught up in the excitement is one of the greatest things in life. Don't hesitate, don't hold back and be afraid if someone thinks you were a fool for being so excited, jump in with both feel.  It will make you enjoy life so much more.

If you don't like something being successful I suggest you just ignore it.

Don't assume.  Sorry, your comment seemed "snarky" like you were rooting for the game to fail.

Leave Momoti alone! She's adorable! XD

I think the Lala's really add a lot of depth to the story and feel of the game.  I think they're the best version of a 'little' race in any mmo I've played.
