Now it's something I don't mind ignoring alltogether.  It's wierd because it was only the People that played EQ that were most interested in this. If Sony did it right they would have had that customer base with ease.

Now if EQ lovers themselves won't play this game who will? The f2p crowd that jumps on the latest MMO that is produced? Is this what Sony cater for. ? . Or does Sony think WoW players will leave there beloved rich game full of raids / pvp / regular updates for a game that looks similar to wow?

I'm not sure what market this is aimed at but it will not be a huge success or the saviour of mmos or the next generation of mmos. It might have been if they didnt have the ridiculous graphics that even my 15 yr old cousin is ashamed to touch.

Most EQ lovers are older now they would have loved to visit Norrath again. I myself was.  I have a nephew who loves mmos too. He himself wanted to try it. Although he had no idea what EQ was (he is from the wow created MMO era).  He said he will pass and wait for ESO. Why? Because the graphics are a turn off and is bored of button bashing mmos from the iPhone to gw2.

We can see what's happening here .. People of all types hate to play cartoon capers regardless of how many went to watch lion king. Playing lion king is not the same.

Who would have thought the next incarnation of one of the greatest mmos would be likened to disney.

If I were Sony I would do exactly what blizzard did with Titan and not bother with this. Save your time and your money.  Go back to the drawing board or your in for a big loss making online game.

if people want to experience EQ then I'm afraid....we have to play EQ1.

They could suddenly turn this around of Ofc.    Get rid of the cartoon characters and using the same voxel graphics make them look at least less stupid/childish/disneyish. And add the trinity system with raiding of many kinds including lair style with pvp and dont make it F2P - THEN you might have a winner.

Otherwise Sony dont bother with this.

yes if you want to experience EQ1, you obviously have to play EQ1, if you want to play EQ2, play EQ2 this is going to be EQnext, this is something new, if you dont like it, just dont look at it, they are not REMAKING EQ1, unfortunately thats what most of the old eq1 players are thinking and thats why you are all disappointed.

If they had called it something else, I don't think anyone (reasonable) would have a problem with it.

But when you use a well known IP to build the hype and the awareness of your game, you get the expectations that go along with it.

SOE can't have it both ways: it can't say "Look! New EQ!" and then be surprised when people are disappointed that it has almost nothing to do with what the previous EQ games brought to the table. Especially after the build up to the "secret reveal".

SOE wants "the hype", but not "the hate". These days you more or less get both, or neither.

I was just thinking..  There are a lot of us that see the writing on the wall when it comes to EQN..  However, for those praising the hype, I wish SOE would make them back up that hype with $$..  Since games aren't truly free and you have to either buy, sub and support it to keep it alive..  I wonder how many EQN fans would be willing to put down $$230 up front to play it on Day 1 of release.. NO refunds :)  I always found that when it comes down to actually placing $$$ on a product or service, supporters start to disappear..

I am not gonna lie, the first MMO i played was everquest 2, a friend that played EQ1 made me start playing eq2 when it was released, i enjoyed this game so much at the beginning, exept maybe that the graphic were too big for the computer people were using at this time, but i would have appreciated if SOE could have kept this kind of graphics for EQNext, im talking especially about the characters/races, im pretty sure it can be possible with the new engine.. but oh well after seeing what kerra is now, i can confirm that im not rolling kerra..if im ever starting to play this game.

I wish they could put EQ2 on the new engine to make it run better, removes all instanced zones in the world and make it better but its only my opinion. I guess i had so much fun on this game that i wish it could be as fun as it was at first.

What writing on the wall do you see? All I saw was a tech demo so your "writing on the wall " isn't valid

I never played EQ1, I played DAOC, so not expecting very much.

If it looks like Free Realms, I won't be able to play it.

RIP City of Heroes. One of my favorite MMO's.

I wouldn't put $230 to play anything before it released.  Not everybody looks at new releases from a "this game is going to be so awesome" or "this game is going to completely suck" perspective like many of the posters on this forum seem to.  Most reasonable people have a "wait and see" attitude and I wish that there were more people here who felt similarly.

There are more NON-EQ1 players than EQ1 players. Do the math. Who would you target? The few or the many?

Plus EQ1 players don't like ANYTHING. Heck, most don't even like their own game after certain expansions....

Who would possibly try to please such a finicky group? NOBODY!!

I actually find it kinda funny how so many "EQ Vets" can complain so much about the graphics being used in EQNext. Any true die hard EQ players would judge a game more on its gameplay and mechanics more than anything and not its graphics. Games like Everquest and Vanguard have horrid graphics compared to tons of games out there today but I, and plenty of other people, still enjoy them more than any other modern day mmo games because they are FUN TO PLAY, and that enjoyment has nothing to do whatsoever with the outdated ancient graphics.

EQNexts graphics style may not be my favorite (and doesnt look quite as bad as wow or similiar cartoonish games when you look at it closer) and I will reserve judgement on the game when it is actually in a finished state and i can get my hands on it to experience the game in its entirety for myself. The mechanics of an ever changing world with players actions and decisions having an actual permanent effect on the world itself to the point that different servers could be nearly entirely different worlds has me interested more than enough, along with numerous other features, to really not even care about the graphics. For me the biggest make or break thing for EQNext will be what kind of F2P model they use. I don't really care much for the 8 ability and no trinity system but again the other features and mechanics they have planned have me more than interested enough to still give it a go and its far to early to complain and QQ about anything as we are nowhere near closed beta even let alone a release and things can still change quite dramatically. Either way personally I will still be giving this game a go and I am a die hard EQ (preLuclin being my fav by far) as well as Vanguard vet.

Yay for opinions I suppose. I myself, have been with EQ, EQ2 and really all things SOE since the very beginning. I check out nearly every MMO that releases as well, and have really come to realize that there will never be that Enchantment that I was struck with starting out in Everquest 1999 all those years ago.

That will absolutely never happen again. That really is fine with me, I'm not living in the past and that's why I also can enjoy this masterpiece in the making that is EQnext. If you are truly hung up on trying to find that feeling EQ gave you within this new game, rather than getting new feelings and experiences you probably will never enjoy EQnext, or any other MMO ever again.

Uh, wrong...I have a few friends who would not touch EQ1 with a 10' polearm that were kinda wanting to see what the next iteration of Norrath would look like. Guess what? They think it looks very good and will definitely play at launch.

As an EQ1 vet myself, I was actrually glad that they did not simply remake EQ1 with new graphics. Why? Because I have played that type of game since 1999. Time to move on...

F2P is a cash grab, I'm suprised SOE didn't invent the F2P model.  P2P is a long term investment, and as someone who has played 7 games for more than 5 years each...I like long term.  I've noticed the mood towards F2P to be changing.  People are finally figuring things out, and F2P brings a whole host of negatives, just to play free (but not free).

You are correct....The crowd they are targeting for this is not the old EQ players, many of which have been faithful to them for 10+ years, but the casual, hope to the next MMO in a month crowd....im sure they felt they can get more numbers this way......GW2 sold how many millions? Minecraft has how many millions sign up to play it? Vindictus has how many millions sign up?...... SOE is all about the dollar...Its their bottom line and always will be....Making the great game to end all games was probably never their plan with EQN...If it ever was, that plan was squished quickly when the suits heard about it.

I was an EQ fanboy, still am.  EQ2 & WoW both came out within weeks of each other and when they did I said to myself there is no way I'm playing WoW with those cartoon gfx. I bought EQ2 which had better gfx but performed bad, was bland, boring and not very responsive. I gave WoW a chance and ended up playing 4 years.

I evolved my position and came to realize that a combination game play, immerssion in the world and having an active community  trumps gfx by a longshot. I'm not alone, 10 million + others felt that way too. Remember the market had a choice between EQ2 and WoW and they resoundingly chose WoW which has the cartoon style.

EQN is focusing on immersion and wide appeal and they feel that going with this style gives them a better opportunity to do that and I agree with them. Furthermore as some have already said this style does not look as dated as quickly as a more realistic style and the game play should be smooth.

Do not fret OP, I'm sure at some point down the line an MMO will be created which offers the level of gfx and immersion you're looking for however I don't quite feel the processing power of home PC's is quite up to the task yet. It will come though, it's just a matter of time.

I do have 1 complaint though which is the payment model. I'm not a fan of FTP. If they want to remove the barrier to entry then I would support something like FTP for the 1st 20 hours or so then you must subscribe to advance your character after that. That way people can play the game for a reasonable amount of time to see if they like it and subscribe if they want to continue.

As a EQ1 vet (circa 1999 - 2003) I do not agree with your criticism.  Am I in love with the character graphics?  No.  Are they as bad as you make them out?  Hardly.  How often do you look at your characters face for that matter while playing?

As far as the archaic trinity system I am neither here nor there.  I do believe there is a certain level of trinity needed especially for end game type content, but I also believe that trinity can evolve into something that is not as hard lined as it is today in most MMO's.  With the enhanced AI concepts I am willing to listen further to see the level of intelligence the NPC's will be able to have against scenarios (i.e. group of 5 dps vs. traditional group setup) or even the ability to learn from overused (ala strategy site hosted) tactics to evolve into unique encounters each time.

Honestly, F2P bothers me more than anything because I know what kind of crowds are brought into the community versus subscription based games.  Here is to hoping for "premium" servers though for paid subscription players that can hopefully setup communities like the original EQ had.

Who did wrong? The advertiser hired to sell the game or the consumer who put faith in advertising?

They could suddenly turn this around of Ofc.    Get rid of the cartoon characters and using the same voxel graphics make them look at least less stupid/childish/disneyish. And add the trinity system with raiding of many kinds including lair style with pvp and dont make it F2P - THEN you might have a winner.

Otherwise Sony dont bother with this.

When I loaded up EQ for the first time, I thought: "I wonder if these games cgi will ever get so good that they'll look like Pixar characters - wouldn't that be awesome'.

That day has come and I am absolutely flumoxed by the detractors.
