A lot of mmo players are coming into FFXIV with many misconceptions.

For example, mmo hoppers think of FFXIV as more of an MMO then a Final FAntasy.  If you appraoch the game as a FINAL FANTASY numbered title FIRST, and an mmo second... then you can see some of the design decisions.

For example, a lot of PC players cried about the game being on the PS3 and somehow it was holding the PC players back.  I hope you realize that there has never been a final fantasy that has not been played on a console.

With respect to the issue at hand,  the elephant in the room COMBAT.

The current combat is truer to the roots of previous final fantasy games then action based mmo's.  Approach FFXIV as a proper final fantasy and you'll see that the combat is more in line with its history than the recent trends of action mmos.

I prefer old school mmo and old school FF combat to action combat.  If the combat in GW2 and Tera were so amazing... i would be playing those games right now instead of biting my nails, nervously waiting for FFXIV release.

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

You do realize that not everyone likes action type combat like Tera/GW2 right?

Yea and those people are wrong.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

So many ignorent comments, the only thing that will fail is the trolls.
While no1 ever expected this many beta sign ups it shows there is alot of interest in this game, from old FF mmo players and new players who never touched a FF mmo.

Naoki Yoshida gained much love from the community with his open letters and updates of what is getting done and what fans want.
This man is very open to its playerbase and its something all those fake cash grabbing hype molesters can learn a thing or 2 from.

Will FF AAR have millions of subs ? no, and they dont need it.
Can it happen ? yes FF AAR can get this many subs, but like i said it isnt needed.
Just like Eve Online and World of Warcraft pre Activision they put their own money into it.
And it was said that they arent worried to get that investment back.
Good if its 2 months down the road and good if its 5 years down the road.
It has been said many times over and over.

But why do you trolls care anyway ?
Its just a Final Fantasy mmo, is doesnt pose a threat for your current mmo right ?
They are all free to play now, so go back to those free to play mmo's and let us pay our outdated subscription....
I mean its a 10 year old engine and its a fail mmo and it has tab target and its asian and its not good enough for you, we get it.
Now move along and let us poor FF fans play our failed product in peace yes ?

Well..............that just tell you how much graphics counts in an MMO.

If it was for the graphics, FFXIV would be the WoW killer, but unfortunately.....................

you know what is sad!!? even if the game style is "outdated" it has been in development for at least 8yrs!! Its "beta" is better than any current AAA mmorpg game out.

FYI< it is not the Luminos Engine, but something like it, Yoshi's words. Not sure where I read it, but the Luminos Engine just didn't jive with the needs of an MMO...so they made a new one from scratch. I expect the used Luminos as a guide, to be sure.

At Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012, Square Enix debuted "Agni's Philosophy", a tech demo for their new Luminous game engine. Though members of the Final Fantasy XIV development team worked on Luminous, Yoshida admitted that both Luminous and Crystal Tools were optimized for offline games and could not handle an online environment with hundreds of on-screen character models.[20] Though Version 2.0 uses a "completely different engine", he called the Luminous engine and the 2.0 engine "siblings" due similarities in structure.[34]

I just find it amazing that graphics that are 8 years old are still relevant. The graphics engine used to create Final Fantasy XIV was developed in 2005. It was used for Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII, and XIV. Here's a trailer from the first FFXIV announcement in 2005:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgtZvn5c4e4

Well in 2009 they announced Final Fantasy XIV, but the game turned out to be terrible. Well, they've been working on the game ever since the release in 2010 to improve FFXIV version 1.0 but dramatically failed and decided to have a WHOLE new over hall and create Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn.

This new game has dynamic events, it has faster and better combat, a whole new storyline, a new community, and hopefully EVEN better graphics.

You're kinda overlooking a few things.

1) They've updated the graphics since the initial release

2) By the looks of the beta, they may have also updated the engine (many of the aspects of the game look like they were taken directly out of Aion, for one)

3) Trailers are typically not rendered the same way as the client. (They're usually rendered on machines and settings much more powerful than your standard consumer computer)

4) While the graphics are gorgeous, that's the staple of Final Fantasy games. They always focus on the graphics, and it's one of the few things this game has over other games. They'd better hold up, especially considering most other games deliberate go in the opposite direction (deliberately choosing a less-refined graphics style to compensate for hardware limitations)

Not trying to crap on how good the game looks, just some perspective. The game does look great!

The simplest way to say it is that it's a modified version of the Luminous engine designed and optimized to fit the needs of FFXIV: ARR, with exceptional results.

That said, this thread is going nowhere fast - inaccurate, easily misconstrued statements in the OP, perfect troll bait already - then some troll slams the combat and people take the bait...

May as well cut it off here, mods...

Thats a cool completely subjective opinion, have fun playing TERA or waiting for ESO/Wildstar/EQNext...

It's hilarious people fail to realize that if i wanted to mindlessly spam button rotations i'd play Street Fighter, Super Smash Bros, or at least an fps like Battlefield.

I like many believe it or not prefer this combat pace with the vast versatility of skills, and MEANINGFUL skill choices resulting from the GCD for PvE or PvP.  Some of us like chess not checkers, that doesn't make us old or stuck in an age of archaic game design. I just prefer a contest of both mental and physical skill, not who can spam the memorized xyz rotation the quickest.

Not saying ARR combat is slow or lacks skill to perform with a full arsenal. I have multiple 50's and do not feel that way whatsoever, however it is clearly designed with emphasis on the decisions you make and abilities you chose to use in your allotted time.  A proper approach especially if you ever hope to achieve large-scale balance in PvE and PvP.

No surprise considering that's how many of their successful titles have been, which I prefer to test one's mind not button mashing ability.

First, Really button rotations for Street Fight? You seriously have no idea how complex SF4 is at the tournament level and can't be broken down by simple "button rotations".

Your Idea of meaningful is you getting a positive emotional response based on your actions.  Your meaningful actions will be no more meaningful in this game than they are in WoW or any other Raid Heavy game.  You will memorize what skills to use when and everything will come down to a rotation.  Your fighting NPCs with scripted events with a few RNG things thrown in there with huge Tells.  You will memorize the fight, you will memorize the tells, hell you could probably at one point game the dungeon by doing specific actions to get the boss/monster to respond a specific way.  But in the end all RPGs that are PvE based will have a rotation.  You are fighting a computer generated monster.  They will not vary from their code because they can't.

Define "fail". My opinion is that it will not generate a lot of negative press like the first release, and there's going to be plenty of paid-for fanfares and reviews in the game-press, so a significant number of players will try it, although less than expected (because re-launch of an old game is, after all, old news, whatever anyone thinks). Afterwards the population would drop fast, as it happens with other mmorpgs, and it will remain as you average game, no better than those already on the market going F2P.

It will probably never become f2p (that would be too much loss of a face for square, and they have pretty strong ideas about how much players have to pay for their games, like $16 for crappy ipad port of ancient FF games), but it'll have its share of fans, and it'll hobble along for 5-6 more years.

It will never, in my opinion, be a profit generator, or even pay back the money spent on development, so in this sense it's going to be a failure.

This ^ about covers it.

EA CEO John Riccitiello's on future microtransactions: "When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you're really not very price sensitive at that point in time...We're not gouging, but we're charging."

Don't believe that 8 years,i know because i have followed this game since the very first release of a photo that suggested it was being discussed.

I think where the time is diluted is in developing the game engine.Yes i realize they could still be designing models, characters, textures, sounds but without a game engine,i think that is a far cry from the real truth.

There are other discrepancies, example Tanaka was apparently the guy,yet he was the guy also working on FFXI.Could explain why all FFXI xpacs since that time were pretty weak in comparison to Tanaka run content prior to any FFXIV "Orange/White Engine" mention.

I would say more like 5 years of actual total game design. There was still discussion on improving FFXI,but only 5 years ago, they decided it was too costly to redo the graphics. That is the main reason FFXIV was released so badly, they needed to recoup several years of a fumbling new game engine and needed to make the new game look different from FFXI.This was because players would cry foul if simply a new FFXI with better graphics, which is exactly what players wanted while not having to buy a new game.

So Square set out to make the NEW game "FFXIV" look different enough from FFXI to warrant a new game sell.Truth is they still copied 75% of FFXI but scrambled the game so badly it came out as a complete fail.Basically they butchered FFXI but added nicer graphics and have scrambled since to give FFXIV  it's own  identity.

However since Yoshi took over,he claimed he needed another 2 years,so if go on the 5 years i claim  and another 2 by Yoshi, you have a total package worth 7 years which  imo is BETTER than any other developer's effort ever. This is because Square does not have 10-25 man divisions, they have a complete PC division with at least 150 people working on the game. However still more math lol,the released game was not worth 5 years of work, barely 3 ,so give Yoshi his two years he wants and you have a respectable 5 years of solid game development.

The Critical Hit Pretzel!

People seem to think you need the 'latest and greatest' for graphics when really a good art style can carry a games graphics for years longer then others that don't stylize it well can.

A good example of a game that has this is World of Warcraft. While not one full of originality, it does come out rather well in using a more original graphic style, one that gave the game an appealing feel to it even years after its launch. While its falling behind it has aged far better then Everquest 2 due to the design choices they made with the game to allow it to shine so well.

FFXIV has done a great job in doing this. The graphics look amazing and yet aren't taxing, all due to the fact they highly optimized the system and spent time creating a style that makes the graphics look better without requiring more taxing functions on the system. If you really look at it, the graphic engine isn't all that great, its how they utilize it with their style that makes it appear so crisp and very pleasing to the eyes, all while giving accessability to lower end systems.

The graphics themselves aren't likely something in place consider for 8 years, and the graphic engine can be improved to do larger things. If its well optimized, additions can be added without major revisions which its likely the game had in place already. :)

If they can get this game in the green in 2-3 years I will be happily surprised.  So much money was basically wasted on 1.0.  Yoshi has done an amazing job turning the game around.

Combat style is  a niche for certain people if you dont like it dont play. I dont like TSW combat so I dont play it, but I also dont bash it.

Its like saying the color blue sucks cause you dont like it and red is best cause you like red. Its a matter of opinion, if you dont like blue dont wear blue objects, if you like red your going to wear red objects.

People seem to like to use the word niche to often describe poor or old fashion game design choices as a way of justifying them.

But you cn't deny that there are a lot of people who prefer this style.  I have every class at 50 with the benefit of having done 1.0 dungeons and 8 man content.

I think the boss encounters in this game are going to be so dynamic, with interesting mechanics, waves of adds, that you'll need the GCD to plan accordingly.  Plus, the combat system, if it were truly action like Tera or GW2....then it wouldn't feel like a Final Fantasy.

This game has a better chance at being successful (financially) by catering to the millions of FF fans around the world than to cater to the Jaded NA market that hops from game to game every two months.   From what iv'e read in the forums.... people who have never played MMOs but are FF fans LOVE LOVE LOVE this game.

The foundation is there and the future is bright.
