"e-Sports" is NOT on par with actual athletes.

I support "pro-gaming" where one might be able to make a living playing video games, but I do NOT think of that as being an athlete.

Why not? It isn't physical, but neither is archery, shooting, sailing, equestrian, golf, fencing or curling, and they're all Olympic sports.

If you even attempt to deny that there is a heightened level of skill required to participate in these games at the LCS level then I'll just call it ignorance and leave it at that.

Your fucking retarded. Every one of those sports you listed takes Athletisium. Ever tried to sail? Hit a golf ball 300 yards? Keep your balance on ice sliding a heavy ass rock into target? Every pulled a bow string back? I could go on but i dont feel i need to.

Yes, I've done all of it, but not as well as a professional. I'm saying that these are skills-based sports over physical sports. John Daly wouldn't run a marathon, but it was his skill that allowed him to drive the ball far plus, probably, some inherent natural ability. Curling probably has the highest percentage of fat people who play it than any other sport on Earth (except sumo wrestling) and some of the best archers in the world are fatties too.

Sorry, all I was trying to say is that athlete does not equate to peak physical condition. Maybe that's the perception, so maybe if they simply called them "professional gamers" that whole argument would go away.

All those sports are very much physical, show me a professional rider, sailor, fencer that is some pudgy ass kid that "ONE tubby tubby TWO tubby tubby" pops in their mind.

Calling e-sports is a friggin joke.  And this is not just a physical issue, really the physical aspect is irrelevant as that is not what makes sports recognized globally... well not purely physical.  There is athleticism and professionalism.  Coachers, regulations, organizations, ect ect all play a part.

And the quote is misleading that people seems to overlook.  The context of the quoted message seems more in line that e-sports are recognized and on par with the NFL, NBA, ect ect on the premises of issuing visas which I agree.

Granted given enough money the gov't would say installing games is an official sport on par with real sports given enough money.  The gov't has made so many retarded statements that nothing surprises me anymore.

You know i just had my roof done by "pro" roofers. does that mean roofing is now a sport? If the file guy at my job puts forth the effort to do his job faster then anyone else, is filing now a sport? I think we need to cover context when talking about this now.

A Sport

For Sport

Two different meanings.

"e-sports" is not A sport.

People do it FOR sport.

Say what you want about the subject. It will not change my mind at all. Stupid subject.

Key words that completely discredits your post.  Show me professionals in said sports that are "fatties."   Still trying ti figure out what the hell is curling, watch a Canadian match and just doing a "WTF is this?"

And some "inherent natural ability" is utter BS in what makes sportsman great.  Sure that might apply to the rare ones like Tiger Woods and other legendary sportsman but really it falls back to dedication and commitment since anyone can learn the stuff and if they tried hard enough they will be an accomplished athlete in whatever sport they are in.

Still though, when you have volleyball, badmitten, jumping the trampoline (whatever the hell you call just bounding on a trampoline that the Chinese won medals in) all considered Olympic sports anything goes in this day n age it seems like.  The criteria and tradition of Olympic sports being a test of physical prowess and athleticism is forgotten and anythings goes now.

they are not athletics but esport is a sport like poker or fishing or driving cars is.

and yes even gamers have a work out programm to train there reflexes. they dont play all day, they do sports and psychologic trainings to stay fit mentally

lol no, mashing keys and turning with a mouse aren't a skill, my secretary could do that if I trained her properly. You're on to something at least, "not like basketball or football" which are actually sports.

Chess and poker aren't sports either, they're freaking games. Just because something is competitive doesn't make it a sport, otherwise we could add risk and monopoly to the list.

Talk about taking something way out of context.

The government has not said the e-sport players are athletic in the same way as, say a professional football player. They did not say StVicious (a LoL pro player) is equal to Joe Montana.

What the government did is recognize that e-sport players have the same demands on international travel that sports athletes often face. By clumping them into the same category they streamline the process of getting travel Visas either into the country for those coming to the US or for US citizens to get travel visas to countries that require them (like China).

If you have ever had to get a travel visa to a place like China you know the pain that it can be. Not only does it require a lot of paperwork (including introductory letters from the company that is hosting you, letters from your own employer that is sending you) it can be expensive (several hundred dollars sometimes).

If you are going to argue about something at least keep in in context.

Sure why not, if there is a competitive official league with a ranked ladder and monetization for monopoly and risk

I have my own definition for sports you have yours

Don't think I've seen any pro gamers pushing 400 lbs. Most of them are scrawny kids, though.

However.. if you look at some of the more classical sports out there, they're not that buff either.

Sport:

- Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Not that I'm huge on esports, but there is a physical component to them as well (even though we don't think of them that way). As I understand it things like nutrition, excertcise, etc. do come into play, to make sure people's hands don't twitch out, lock up, or slow during a competition.

It's also fairly well known that, while it's possible to be 400 lbs and function on a computer, you do function a lot better if you're healthy, and that science has carried over into esports (especially be the larger, sponsored teams).

Well, I assume this would be on par with allowing professional chess players to obtain visas to attend matches in other countries.

Many of you are too young to remember the classic cold war matches in the 1970's like Bobby Fischer vs Boris Spassky.

So if anything all this announcement does is recognize these as legitimate competitive "games", and not actual sports. (which they aren't)

Good new for Monopoly, Farmville and Candy Crush Saga "professionals" as well I'm sure.

I call BS.

Otherwise the BBB would be asking for all international business persons to be classified as "athletes" so they could get visas.

Nice try with the "straw-man" argument though.

LOL   Personally, I could care less what people call what a sport. I doubt the government does too. The main difference here is that the P1 athlete visa costs more than a normal temp visa for visiting the US. Good way for them to make more money.
