How does that work?

 

I suppose you have a bunch of buttons to map to various hotkeys and such.  I'm curious how this turns SWTOR into an action combat game?  The only thing to change is the input device.  It's still "tab" targeting, although it's now "A-button" targeting, etc, instead of tab.

Not trolling you, I'm curious what you mean (I've never played a computer MMORPG with a console game controller).

 

You said you hate tab targeting, but how does a new input device change what you hate?

My background, I don't mind tab targeting at all, actually I prefer it, over twitch games.  GW2 was a hybrid, which worked OK for solo strategies I suppose .. but SWTOR is more interesting than GW2, and whatever GW2 had to offer couldn't save it from a bland story, and bland goals.

 

Can you expand on what you mean with the controller?

There are so many rude people here. I felt the combat was extremely fluid, I never encountered any of these bugs that people think they see, and I thought the animations were fine..especially with regard to how much they improved since early beta. I left near end level because I just felt it was too linear and the world felt too static with the social hubs in the wrong place, but combat was def not the reason I left. I think there were too many useless abilities, but pretty much on par with most MMOs.

i don't expect to like Darkfall, altho i may like it MORE than other MMOs. i know it is gonna have a very frustrating level of grind to it, even if its significantly less than most. waiting for a pure FAST action virtual world. dice rolling & character levels (even "skills") IN COMBAT should have never carried over from pencil & paper to a computer that can reasonably model 3D spaces and objects

Well in fact it is sad but SWTOR is the best classic mmo after wow, not only combat but also story, quests .....People can laugh how much they want but game is great

It`s great for you that you have found a "good" combat. But people see the "good" combat with their own eyes. Cmon! Maybe for Korean market but not for western. This Kung Fu flying combat is relic from 80s, to much hentai cartoon

Agree here.  I never had a problem with the combat, I think it is fun.  I don't fully understand all the complaints.

 

There are many other issues with SWTOR that get glossed over, like the horrid game engine, or as you mentioned linearity.  Or the lack of basic functions like sitting in chairs when socializing.  Or missing "real" space combat, or KotOR card games (Sabbak, Pazzak).

The horrible game engine tops any complaint I have by a factor of 10, maybe 20.  No world PVP?  Everything is instanced, even common areas?  That's my #1.

Unhappy with tab targeting combat and raids with tab targeting? ... give me a break.  Play another game.

 

Combat is fine.  As to whether it's better than WoW .. sure .. but not the best available.  Other games do it better, but those games lack features in other areas, all the same.  My real complaint here is that there is no world PVP, factions are separated into their own instances so they cannot engage in PVP (Zero chance, separated), and the planets that do allow PVP offer crappy rewards to the victor - the xp for killing a trash mob, really??

Even on a PVP server, PVP is meaningless .. There would be a valid complaint, if the OP wanted to start a new thread about useless PVP servers.

@bubaluba: Maybe you can tell me why this is not for the "west". I simply don`t understand this argument. You know i love to be a skilled player and usually i play a lot. When a system is easy to learn and hard to master, where is the problem? Why must everything be easy and dumb to get people in. I want a MMO with such a combat system+open pvp and i would never ever play anything other! I hope the guys from Pearl Abyss can use their experiences from C9 and make Black Desert great!

I wouldn't get bent out of shape.  I think people who hate tab-targeting never actually did any high end raiding, where success depended on true skill.

 

The younger generation prefers instant gratification via control pad, hence all the complaints.  Up, Down, Left, Right and a few buttons.

 

Meanwhile, in a MMORPG, as soon as they get in a raid situation where tab doesn't work and precision clicks are needed instead, along with on-the-fly ability usage, suddenly, "tab targeting sucks".  Because yeah, hitting tab means you fail your raid group. :P

 

Everyone in your raid dies, and you say, "Tab targeting sucks!" .. hehe

I'll state that I much prefer action combat or even a hybrid combat like GW2 over standard mmo combat.

But as far as that standard tab target mmo combat goes, I thought SWTOR was pretty decent. I really liked some of the animations, especially the force users. The one big negative for me though was the ability delay.

WoW was good because of it's fast ability response, depth in groups and novelty to many. SWTOR was sluggish, shallow and old news.

 

The best combat IMO is between GW2 and Neverwinter. GW2 would be perfect with aimed attacks and more abilities. Tab-targeting and AoE spam are dead, let's bury them.

 GW2 and Neverwinter have worst and most simplistic combat ever seen in mmorpg.  Any of people i know uninstalled both games after few days because of this simplicity. On top of that lack of almost every mmorpg concept in gw2 and useless pvp ruined  desire for this game even for most hardcore gw2 fans , the one that attacked SWTOR all day long for months.

The Combat/AI systems are among the worst i have ever played and the SOLE reason i quit the game.

I found the rest of the game to be not to bad,i even played every class on both good and evil sides just to try and find one class that had some good combat.

I am going to post one example to show what good combat is.This is just one mob a small example.

I FFXI there is a bird called Colibri.

You want a Piercing weapon,preferably a BOW to fight them because the birds are weak to piercing attacks.HUGE difference in combat dmg using bow versus these birds.Then these same birds will steal your food,so if you decide to use food you better not take hate or  the bird will steal it.

I decided to post another example.Crabs in FFXI are strong to melee and have a special ability that increases their defense to melee.SO you  prefer to have a Black Mage so you can nuke it with magic.Also if you can setup a DISTORTION Renkai and Magic burst you will get good added damage on top of that.

This was just two examples,with far more depth than any fight in SWTOR and these were just two ordinary mobs.

There is no action and reaction fighting in SWTOR it is simply hit your hotbar icon dmg until the mob dies.In FFX Ifor example the mob tosses up Stroneskin you might want to cast a spell to remove it or if a mob has a dangerous TP attack you might not want to feed it alot of TP or if a mob uses a strong attack if anyone stands behind it,then you don't want to stand behind it.SO many more ideas than that reside inside the game,that is what is called DEPTH of game design,SWTOR does not have it,especially not in combat.

FFXIV AAR is the worst combat experience I ever had besides Rift , it feels so slow and I fell asleep very fast :D SW:TOR feels more fluid to me.

How does that work?

 

I suppose you have a bunch of buttons to map to various hotkeys and such.  I'm curious how this turns SWTOR into an action combat game?  The only thing to change is the input device.  It's still "tab" targeting, although it's now "A-button" targeting, etc, instead of tab.

Not trolling you, I'm curious what you mean (I've never played a computer MMORPG with a console game controller).

 

You said you hate tab targeting, but how does a new input device change what you hate?

My background, I don't mind tab targeting at all, actually I prefer it, over twitch games.  GW2 was a hybrid, which worked OK for solo strategies I suppose .. but SWTOR is more interesting than GW2, and whatever GW2 had to offer couldn't save it from a bland story, and bland goals.

 

Can you expand on what you mean with the controller?

I think hate was a bit strong , i just don't use tab at all in SWTOR , I have combos of buttons using xpadder 32 skills for me and 8 for a companion , I also use the right thumb stick for the mouse cursor movement and back and start buttons for left and right mouse buttons. It just makes playing the game more like an action combat game , you could say like a beat 'em up. Granted it gets a little bit hectic in Operations 8 man and 16 man as a healer or tank , but that's cool.

Late reply as I was using the double xp last day to my advantage :)

Wushu combat is so damned easy its a joke. Its not possible for it to be complicated given the paper rock scissors system and slow speed/animations. (former rank 1 crafter and top 5 tangmen before i quit)

 

I think the best combat systems I have played with on either end of the spectrum were EQ2 and Tera

One of SW:TOR's prized features was the whole orchestrated combat.  Lightsaber 1 swings > lightsaber 2 blocks.  This looks great against mobs during dailies or leveling up.  The sacrifice is the length of the global cooldown to support the animation.

Unfortunately you don't see it much in PvP, since it's all about special abilities and less about autoattack as a filler (the ability that enforces the choreographed combat).  

It is what it is.  Even if you see less of it in PvP, the combat in this game is still very fun.  Now if only there wasn't restrictions on weapon usage. (Still wishing that my Guardian could wield double-bladed lightsaber.)  =(
