We all just have to hold on.  I'm dicking around a little in GW2, but not putting any real effort into progression.  More interesting games are coming, which makes waiting seem like forever.  At least one or two of them should be a nice change for those of us sick to death of theme parks.

IMHO thats the problem everyone is having. They keep waiting for whats around the corner and it will never, ever be there. They want that feeling they had years ago when they first caught the mmorpg bug.  When WoW and EQ released, folks caught the fever and got over it. No matter how many games they pump out now, you will never get that feeling again.

That has been the case in the past when we were all hoping the tide would change in MMO development.  Even a couple years ago it was looking pretty grim, and I was seriously starting to believe I was going to be ending my MMO gaming hobby for good. We got games like SWTOR, GW2, Defiance, etc, and while I know some people love them, there's a growing number of people who have been there and done that ad nauseum.  The difference now is that there are games we know are hybrids and sandboxes *finally* coming, and they will be different experiences than the pure theme parks we've had for the past 8 or 9 years now.

I don't think it's enough to tell people to stop looking forward and just deal with what is available.  I gave several new games my full attention when they released this past year or so, and the pure theme park experience can no longer keep my interest.  No amount of forcing my focus is going to change the fact that these games are limited in scope, easy-mode and too contrived for me to find them interesting.

I haven't given up hope mind  you, I just know that it will be very hard to relive those memories from the past. I hope you are right about these new hybrid type games coming up, but like you I will press on with what I have and just live with it. My biggest fantasy would be just to have Blizzard fire up a few Vanilla servers and keep them maintained with a minimal subscription.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Yeah, I heard your wallet can play the game for you now :)

GW2 sucked me in for a solid four months.  I haven't touched half the content, but I just got burned out.  It is a great game.  The WvW is also a wonderful time-suck (the good way).   Pay once, play forever.  The nice thing about the game is that new content and world events keep coming.

DF - If you are interested in DarkFall, I'd recommend paying for a few months (Depends on your budget, of course).  I played the original and was totally absorbed for about a year.  If you like playing with others in groups and/or crafting, I'd imagine this is a great place to play.  You'd think it would feel empty because of the lack of "story" or "quests," but I was more involved in that game and my clan than most I play.

Neverwinter - Got to 25 and it didn't feel challenging at all, so I left.

I'm also considering going back to DF, but in the meantime I'm giving Dragon's Prophet a generous trial and playing some closed-betas to keep things interesting.  There was a feature on MMORPG.com earlier this week where the author mentioned how it is harder to invest in a single game nowadays, since the market is flooded with options, make and model.  I think many of us are feeling the same.

there's nothing out there right now, i'm even considering taking the plunge and crawling back to warcraft after being away for a long time simply because there's nothing else out there worth playing (and while endgame sucks in warcraft with it's constant dailies and grind it is still fun to level up a character through all of the zones starting from the beginning after you've been away).

i've tried most of them.

i'm not sure if we're allowed to just say we're in beta of a specific game or games so i won't comment on if i'm in beta or not specifically in reference to any games i suppose.

but as to the current games out there released there's nothing worth playing, the only thing i feel is worth playing is eve but i just don't feel like attempting to get into it at this stage.

and the sad thing is there isn't alot of stuff coming that looks that captivating either, some stuff looks decent and what not but nothing that blows me away and makes me feel like i'm going to spend years with it. (5+ years).

i'm hoping wildstar will deliver on how creative/quirky/fun it looks but even if it does i have a feeling it will only be a short term thing. (perhaps a year at most).

it's a sad time to be an mmo fan, and i don't know what the solution is either.

It looks like most of the games you listed, besides SWG, are basic quest grinders.  Maybe try a different type of game? There is Eve, Age of Wushu, Fallen Earth, or GW2 for something that is a little different. Heck, even give Path of Exile a good run.  That's a fun game for what it is.  I know, I know,...some people don't like the buzz word, "fun".

Really can't find anything out there myself either.

Recently coughed up the dough for the secret world.. just can't get into it.  It's just not an MMORPG, imo.  I don't get it.I *want* to like it, too.  I feel like they could have done much more with that IP.

GW2 was fun but had no staying power.  Rift was generic to the max.  Can't get into LOTRO.  SWTOR no thanks.  Etc, etc.  Best bet may be just to return to some private servers until the next gen of MMOs proves itself (or not).

There's quite a few games that are ftp or are going ftp that you could try.

Rift goes ftp Wednesday, you also have Tera,Dragon's Prophet,Neverwinter,Age of Conan,EQ2 and so on.If you want to try the btp route you have The Secret World and Guild Wars 2,

People like different thing's and any of these games could be the one you call home!

Some day I'm going to put a sword through your eye and out the back of your skull!

and every single one of those games have something in common, they lack the charm, depth and intrigue to captivate you and keep you stimulated for a long time.

the secret world, perhaps being the exception but even with that there's something off that almost forces you not play it., it's weird.. even as i play it i'm thinking, "i should be having an awesome fun time right now" but i'm not.

i think in that game it's the combat/skills/loot system, the story/atmosphere is killer.

there's no creativity or depth in games any more, it's amazing how those older games on the sega/nintendo consoles with so much less available to them were able to be so much more creative and have so much more depth.

at the time i dreamed of games as they are now and it's ironic that now i dream of games back then.

if any of these mmo's could even bring half of what those oldschool games brought it would be amazing.

I'd say give Secret World a try if your looking for a good atmosphere type game.  It has it.  Though I must admit I have finally lost the spark it gave and I think that is mainly due to the lack of updates they have released.

I am having fun in Dragon Prophet beta,  a generic and bland game in many ways, but it has "something", I can not put my finger on, that makes me keep playing.

Oracle lv29 and so far the game has been getting better  as I'v gone through the quests, both content wise and patches.

There are three possibilities here:

1. Try other genres. There are loads of interesting games in other genres. Maybe try RTS, TBS, RPG, FPS? They could rekindle your love for games.

2. Do sth irl. Try various other hobbies such as Archery, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, cooking, athletics, dating, watching sport(live-yeah I understand that it's Summer, the drab part of the year)? Hell, you could even try something like astrology /astronomy? Maybe sth dead serious like writing, physics, chemistry, maths? As you can see, there are HEAPS of stuff to do irl.

3. Browse the ENTIRE catalogue of MMO games. Pick all the games that even remotely interest you and play them(no matter how long). It's the same if you play two games for 15 weeks each or 10 games for three weeks each. THE SAME waffling thing!

Pick your poison and good lukk!

Take care.

edit: maybe you are just burned out on mmos(can't blame you seeing how similar all these Themeparks are)?

I am in the same boat, OP (and all those who replied likewise).

There are some old gems still puffing away, but most of us have played them to death. Plus, they don't always sit well with the fluidity of modern games. Saying that, there is a horrible swell of new mmorpgs - including big budget ones - that are somehow clunkier than a MUD. I sincerely believe mmorpg studios have a tendency to throw too much money at amateur game designers: only in mmorpgs can devs spring out of thin-air 'fully formed' and get a multi-million dollar budget to work with (I speak as a game developer here). The industry if full of people with 'ideas' with no experience of how to realise them - it shouldn't be a surprise that there is a tendency to fall back to cloned designs and leave the marketing team to explain why it is different. The scary thing is, I think a lot of them believe their own hype!

A mmorpg should have a living, breathing world that we all share and, ideally, it ought to be an open seamless world. The different ways we can impact and leave our mark on the world is what will make it stand out to the gamer and entice them to stay. Investment in a character is not enough - I've gone back to mmorpgs after long periods (up to 10 years) and my characters are always the same - unfortunately, so are the worlds. The new breed of mmorpgs just don't address this fundamental pillar of mmorpg gameplay ad mmorpgs haven't for a long time (arguably since UO). I really feel there is an arguement that many mmorpgs are not mmorpgs if the only player to player participation is in small groups of 20vE or 20v20 - the only massive game to be found in most of them is on general chat, and that's not a game most enjoy playing.

It's been a slow creep to this stage and a painful death - let's hope the upcoming mmorpgs do things as differently as they claim to and aren't just speaking through a marketing mouthpiece. Sadly, experience makes me suspect that any positive return to the ideals of mmorpg gameplay will be as slow a creep and this new crop will turn out to only be good on paper, ending up ever-so-slightly more engaging than the current gen.

*sigh*

God, I sound like a right old moaning fart.

There are a few games to look forward to but TESO seems to be the big one to watch.  Archeage might be good, but its tough to tell.  The are some others to take note of like CU and other smaller MMOs like that.

I played GW2 for a little bit, but I couldn't stick with it.. the combat felt kind of stale after a little bit.  I ended up going back to DCUO, but its much more action oriented and would require a controller on the PC, simply because its more of a fighter where you'll string combos together.

Otherwise, I'd say try everything.  You never know what you'll end up enjoying.

Right now it is pretty much Borderlands 2 for me leveling up and min/maxing dps on various toons.  Can't seem to get enough of that game.

GW2 might be worth a spin.  Beyond that I think I will likely wait for new ones to come on the scene.
