Hard for me to talk about this system as I know I'm probably bias.  There have been too many videos and posts that I agree with to keep a balanced view.  This is also with me keeping in mind I'm not really all that "in the know" when it comes to technology, and what I read on it is usually from those who claim to be such (and they themselves might be wrong).

But knowing these things, I would also say that we can now potentially tell the gamers from the non-gamers and or just plain fanboys by looking at statistics and votes on sites of those who still defend the revealing of the One.

One party isn't meant to be used as an offense, but you have to question if you're a "gamer's gamer" if you enjoy multi-media over pure focus on games and the gaming (potential) power of a system.  Nothing wrong with liking a system that is some claim to essentially be an expensive remote, or do what computers can easily do now with the right hardware, but we're seeing a split (in general and not as a law) of those who have been hardcore / old school gamers and those who jumped hopped on with the 360 and enjoy their expensive features such as Gold and Netflix and other mediums.

I didn't much like the PS4 reveal, but at the very least they made the point that gaming was their main focus (or the features which enhanced video games or the experience thereof such as going into your friend's game and helping him with the gameplay).  How they wanted to make a system that developers could make great games on, how they talked with those who actual made games to see how best allow them to do so for the gaming fanbase.  Indeed, even how they focused on the powerful GGDR5 Ram to facilitate much of this (also so that in eight years time when the "one's" peaks are reached, the specs of the PS4 will shine and push things forward closer (no where near, but) to what the computer is then capable.  With that, it's a shame that the least powerful system will limit more powerful platforms as seen with the 360 and PS3 and not wanting to focus making PC graphics (additional work) when you also sell on the consoles.

As it stands with the current generation, the big companies spend millions to try and push just "25%" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00gAbgBu8R4 ) more out of the system's outdated hardware.  With that, I'd imagine superior parts could be pushed farther by the time we reach such a point with the PS4.  Many games would have to just not be developed for the One and instead just be released for the PS4 and Computer if they want to go all out (or have severely limited graphics on the One in terms of perhaps lighting/shading/new technologies (in the future) such as Tomb Raider's hair physics now as an example).

Even if they absolutely "WOW" us at E3, this event was to show gamers where they stood.  And they did such in spades.  The "shiny shiny" will soon fade and the console will be exposed for what it is to the general gaming crowd (and those who cling to Xboxone or don't want to admit the PS4's blantant superiority).  It's a normal reaction, as I wouldn't ever want to admit my computer being inferior to something else.  I've pretty much stopped playing consoles with the N64 and the Playstation, so I couldn't care less about consoles next generation aside from whatever limitations they have in the distant future as that may be the "quota" for games in general if they also release on the PC.

As a result I've been seeing arguments between gamers and people who are all about social media and the one thing I've read holds true from that:  It's all about what you want from a console, pure gaming or multimedia with a host of restrictions to gaming or even using the system (which in my opinion you don't really need if you have a computer of any age) that will decide which system is best for you.

If you can do the hard stuff (high end games), then you can probably do the easy stuff, too.  AMD is willing to sell Microsoft and Sony the IP blocks of anything they've got, whether Jaguar cores, Piledriver cores, GCN CUs, video decode, video encode, or whatever.  That's in addition to being willing to integrated anything into the chip that Microsoft or Sony already has or is willing to license from elsewhere.

I for one don't hold real loyalty to either console manufacturer. I think both will be rushed and end up with problems like the last gen consoles had. In which neither had a proper recall issued (as should be industry standard when you mass-release a faulty product) nor did the companies admit that there were widespread problems with the products.

AMD is already selling chips with 4 Jaguar cores and 2 GCN CUs, though laptops and tablets built on Kabini and Temash aren't available to the general public yet.  AMD started selling chip with 32 GCN CUs and 6 GDDR5 memory channels around the start of last year.  Getting from there to a single chip with 8 Jaguar cores, 18 GCN CUs, and 4 GDDR5 memory channels isn't a trivial thing to do, but it's not like Sony is inventing the stuff from scratch.

It all boils down to which console has the exclusive titles you're looking for. Specs barely matter anymore. Imo if you buy a console based on specs, you're not really in it for the gaming anyway.

If you thought the events were dynamic, you'll think the stories are living.

I doubt I will buy either, but I think Foomerang is right.  I seen the video for the illumiroom and that makes me want xbox even if it's the weaker product.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

That actually looks like shit to me and something I'd never care about. But they are thinking outside the (x)box, at least.

I understand that I'm getting older and less willing to adapt to new things, demonstrated by my avoidance of twitter for years among other social media but the one thing I always liked to keep up with is gaming. Based on what Quizzical has been saying the past few months about both consoles, the only real benefit to me is that Developers will finally upgrade the graphics on games and that will translate to the PC ported versions AND THAT makes me happy.

I'm still unwilling to convert to the console side, if I did, which I wouldn't, I'd have to say that the PS4 is the only one that makes sense, even if Sony can't keep their customers payment and privacy information safe, getting robbed by paying for Xbox live doesn't sound any better either lol.

I successfully avoided the 360 and PS3 without missing out and I was afraid they might give me a good reason to waste money on next gen consoles. Glad to see that it'll be no problem to skip this gen as well.

Worst case scenario is that the PS4 and Xbox one can keep up with the average mid-range to lower high-end gaming PC's of today? Then they'll make games for the next 10 years that'll run just fine on my current lowest end PC.

The biggest problem I have with consoles isn't the hardware. It's the closed system. It's the same problem I have with Apple devices, only consoles go to an extreme.

If rumors are to be believed, then the next generation will be even more restrictive than the current, with DRM becoming so pervasive into the system that I don't even want to touch it.

At least inside the Apple ecosystem, most programs cost well less than $1 - ok, I don't feel the need to be able to trade around a $0.99 app. Consoles that isn't the case, with $50+ releases being the norm. Sure, the production value may be a lot more than an iOS app, but $50 buys a whole lot of $0.99 apps. If I can't trade them around, rent them, borrow them, etc - the case for the $50 release is done for me.

And this applies to both Sony and Microsoft

If the price comes down significantly on the price of a new release - to the point where used sales are moot anyway (I don't think it needs to come all the way down to $0.99, but probably in the $15-25 range), then it's an easier pill to swallow. But $60 for a game I'll play through once (if that), that gives me on average 15 hours of play time (which is what most console games do - there are exceptions, but the vast majority once i've seen the story play through I'm done), no thank you.

I do like the convenience of having something in my living room. I bought a PS3 mainly for FFXIII (mistake) and to have a Blu-Ray player. I've watched exactly 0 Blu-Ray titles on it. Occasionally I'll turn it on (only to find I have 1hr+ worth of updates to do), and watch Netflix on it. I have an Mac Mini server also hooked up to my TV that gets used on a daily basis as my iTunes server, Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, etc.

We have a WiiU for the kid - he loves it. He mostly watches Netflix on the controller.... and plays free demo games (since he can't get far enough into them to get past the Demo lock on them yet).

Both will loose, to the PC gamers in the upper quadrant...

And the cheep mobile tablet gamers on the other hand.   My year old laptop (But then thats an Alienware) allready outperforms these systems.

And they are not much ahead of the Wii U either.

Edit ;  For those that dont understand, PC gaming has just been saved.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations)
Currently playing : The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar

Say they cost £300, you can build a better pc for £600. Now people might think, double the price.

But then current old gen console games cost £45, where as Aaa pc games cost £30.

So within a year, if you buy a game a month, your better pc is costing you £420 when you take into account what you save on game prices minus the markup to Sony / microsoft

So if you buy a lot of games the pc soon works out cheaper, and will be more powerfull and will let you do all that non gaming stuff better than a console. And that's not counting all the steam sales, indie scene etc..

Agreed. I built my PC, it was cheaper to buy parts and build it my self than to buy it whole. Over all the PC is cheaper, xbox console players are mugs for buying it... I know because I bought 2 my self few years ago. So I talk from experience when I say PCs are cheaper. :P

It's all about the exclusives.

I might go PS4 just for new FF and FFXIV on console, but if both are also on XBox One, then I'll go Xbox One all the way for new Halo and Fable.

I really could care less for what is going to amount to maybe 10-20% improved graphics.

I love the idea of controlling my TV with my voice and all the "one console to rule them all" stuff Xbox is doing.

They said that about the original Xbox as well, and we still can't (legally) play those games on a PC. Instead, we got some crappy Games for Windows Live thing that never really worked right and no one really knew what it was supposed to do in the first place.

The original XBox was also a x86 (733 Mhz Pentium III chip), and it had nVidia graphics which was some place in between a GeForce 3/4.

There was even a rumor that Windows 8 would have native support to play 360 games, but that one is more far fetched, since the 360 is a PPC CPU, and games would have to be run under an emulator (although it isn't impossible). This rumor did sorta come true, although not really: What “Xbox Games on Windows” actually means

I'll believe it when I see it. And if I could play X1 games on a PC, why would I buy the console at all?

This is sort of how we're setup and how I feel.  We didn't get a WiiU, the kids got the old Wii and we haven't updgraded or purchased another console.

I'm actually thinking about getting a 3D smart TV which will let me do most of my TV without the need for a blu-ray player or a console.  We use Netflix, VUDU, and Amazon and that's about it.

Again, I'll second this.  That whole xbox games thing never made sense to me.  Microsoft still has a lot to sort out with Windows 8 and XBox.  Microsoft doesn't have it all sorted out and I don't know if they really have an over-arching design and focus yet.

For one the Windows 8 store and the Windows Phone 8 store aren't compatible.  To me that's huge.  The XBox stuff is a little better.  I don't really like how they merged Zune into XBox Music, mostly because I loved how Zune worked all on its own.  XBox games aren't really clear about what is a Windows 8 store game, an XBox game, an XBox for Windows game, and a Windows Phone 8 store game.  Those are all almost but not quite well integrated and clear.

Like you said, it doesn't really work, they haven't quite delivered on integration (which I admit is a huge task give their environment), and if they did what reason do I have to purchase an XBox One when I can use a PC to game and my TV to watch Netflix?  It would just be an expensive glorified blu-ray player and I don't want one of those.

To be clear though, Sony and the PS4 don't entice me either.

I think a mind wipe so people could play an mmo like it was their first time again, would be easier to build than a new mmo people here would actually like. - DamonVile

The biggest problem I have with consoles isn't the hardware. It's the closed system. It's the same problem I have with Apple devices, only consoles go to an extreme.

You will be able to run Xbox one games on a regular windows computer, try that with ps4 game.

I doubt it, unless you merely mean that a lot of console games will get ported to PC.  A PC would be too easy to hack, and then single player console games would lose the anti-piracy protections that are the main reason for game consoles to still exist.

I'm not saying that everyone should get a PS4.  The "if you want a next generation gaming console" is in the title for a reason--and with the assumption that some people don't want a next generation gaming console.
