This might be the most ridiculous post i have ever seen.  Yes they layed off people after production of a major release finished.   You don't need a full team to produce DLCs.   The show has created buzz in the TV crowd.   It got renewed after 3? 4? episodes for another season.   It is SyFy's highest rated show and the game has over a million accounts in just 2 months.   Just simple math excluding freebies and such, that's 60 million dollars within 2 months of release.  Not to account in for cash shop items (which many people buy, my guild always has 5 or 6 people activating boosts weekly), DLC season passes, and collector edition versions of the game.   I would not be surprised if they have raked in 100 million dollars already.  Sure this is no WoW standard, but by all means this is a GREAT start to a successful MMO.

So tell me again why Trion Worlds would drop AA?

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

You were doing well 'til that little faux pas, Defiance has had 1 million REGISTRATIONS which is meaningless unless they all bought the game but then Trion would have said 1 million games sold, Trion are good with mincing words. Though it shows it works you fell for it.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/loadNews/27505

Then you really screw it up with the common mistake of 60x 1 million equals $60 million to Trion from box sales, I'll let you think about that one. But then why would Trion get rid of a large chunk of their dev team if they were rolling in it as you seem to think they are?

Its not that Trion will drop AA its that XL Games (AA's Korean develepers) will want a more capital rich company to take it on for them, its out of Trion's hands really.

I still remember what doom and gloom it was when BioWare laid off employees 6 months after release of SWTOR having the same argument, that it does not need that many employee for future development, nobody here believed it this statement,

Why TRION should be treated differently.

TOR flopped or they didn't hit their targets if you will, heads rolled, development was teams were cut but TOR is a decent game that had the backing of the second biggest western game developer to turn it around. F2p ensued and the ship was steadied but what has Trion got backing them? after such poor showing with 3 games? But I agree this situation should be treated equally for all games.

They're just translating the game, not making it. Even if we assume Defiance underperformed, they have more than enough manpower to translate a single MMO. Besides, AA is probably their most promising title at the moment, so they are likely to put some effort into it.

Translating a game or any software for that matter is not as easy as going to Google translate and changing some strings.

Thats probably why Tera and Aion took a year extra to appear in the west.

I personally think no and another publisher will have to step up (wait thats the title DUH!). The conversion of Rift will likely get some interest from ex-players and people who haven't played before but as the game is really outdated and mediocre (personal view don't shoot me) this interest will be very short lived and the game will sink back to its present situation quite quickly.DEfiance seems to need a lot of work and is not creating any real buzz with the TV crowd.

As a fan of Korean and Asian MMO's I'd like to see this conversion done properly and not rushed and with the lackluster performance of Trion Worlds games Rift, Defiance and the shelved End Of Nations this might be the case to try an inject some needed cash into an ailing company.

your maybe reading too mch into the layoffs at trion..its inevitable that companies lay off people after release of a game..they always downsize.its too early in defiances release to come to a conclusion if its a failure or not..i suppose time will tell.

You've had to much Chin Up.

I know. In fact, I've plenty of first-hand experience in the matter. Still, it's usually not even comparable to creating that software.

All of the alleged parts of your sentence came from an unnamed source in an IGN article which have been called 100% false by Trion and have been corrected or amended in most stories about this.

Though thats probably true and I bow to your experience in these matters, Trion have Defiance, Rift and supposedly End of Nations being actively developed at the same time. Is there room for a proper, thorough and quality translation of Archeage now that they are downsizing?

Before you blow a gasket, go and look at the article again.

From the Massively site:

"IGN is reporting "massive" layoffs at Trion. Though the website doesn't cite any sources, it suggests that "well over half the company has been let go," and it also says that those affected may include as much as 80% of the company. An undisclosed IGN source says that "employees are being escorted out of the building and that senior leaders from various Trion teams may not receive severance due to 'undelivered services.'" [These claims have since been rebutted by a Trion Worlds representative, who told Massively directly that while there were indeed layoffs, the 80% number originally suggested by IGN was "grossly exaggerated." She further clarified that no one was escorted out of the building or denied severance as IGN's unnamed source alleged. Additionally, developers emphasized during today's official stream that the RIFT team is not affected by the layoffs.]"

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/trion-reportedly-undergoing-massive-layoffs/ Read it for yourself.

So the question isn't can Trion continue with AA. The question is how many are Trion really laying off and in which studio/s?

This whole thread is nothing but speculation based on an inaccurate report. Before you engage in this kind of doom mongering it's advisable to get the facts straight first.

I'm gonna have to agree with the folks saying you're assuming way too much OP. Remember folks, IGN and PC Gamer are not valid sources of information...not for news, reviews...anything. Their opinion has always been for sale to the highest bidder. They make wild accusations to force companies to give them the inside story. It's a shitty, National Enquirer-esque tactic. You can always tell when a company didn't pay IGN off, because they will run that ass through the dirt in reviews, even if it's a good game that gets mostly positive reviews from other outlets.

See the misconception is that I'm basing my speculation on just the recent news but if you read my posts thats not thr whole story is it and this started for me a while ago. This recent news just prompted me to start this thread, but ask yourself would you not deny potentially damaging news from being seen by your investors before you get to speak to them? I certainly would.

Trion started out great, but they did what a lot of quickly successful and ambitious companies do.  They did too much and took on too many projects.  Rift launch was successful and they had a good couple of years.  But after that it has been mishap after mishap.  End of Nations was a disaster.  Defiance was a disaster.  The Rift expansion was not up to par and didn't do well at all.

One more mishap especially with ArcheAge and Trion will be in trouble.  I love Trion, especially the Rift team.  Hopefully they pull through.

What are people registering for? There's no trial, and it's B2P, are they including buddy keys or something here?

I know. In fact, I've plenty of first-hand experience in the matter. Still, it's usually not even comparable to creating that software.

Though thats probably true and I bow to your experience in these matters, Trion have Defiance, Rift and supposedly End of Nations being actively developed at the same time. Is there room for a proper, thorough and quality translation of Archeage now that they are downsizing?

Impossible to say from what we know, but if they can't do a proper translation of a high-budget and potentially very profitable MMO, they're really screwed. I don't think they are, considering Rift's move to F2P will probably generate lots of income and Defiance was probably not disastrous, even if it underperformed.

You were doing well 'til that little faux pas, Defiance has had 1 million REGISTRATIONS which is meaningless unless they all bought the game but then Trion would have said 1 million games sold, Trion are good with mincing words. Though it shows it works you fell for it.

Going ahead as planned. Feel free to quote me later on when I'm right. Not playing it anyways just saying.
