OP  5/17/13 6:02:37 AM#1

I've been taught when someone you dont know offers you something for free there is a string somewhere.

I read the FAQ for Neverwinter, seemed like a decent enough game to try out.  The problem I have is on their main FAQ they state the game is free and provide no details about the strings.

I come where and I read about their stupid over priced item store.  Developers should offer two tiered services. One service for the sucker born every minute and the other service so people who just want to buy a dam game and play it.

Cryptic is off my list because they cant clearly and honestly tell me how much a decent experience is going to cost.

Nope, nothing is free.

The truth is that the game is entirely free to play.

However, you may not enjoy playing it at the free level. That does not mean it's not free to play.

You can get to level-cap in common-drop (green) armor and looted potions. It may take a few days longer than if you spent some money, but it's entirely possible. It may not be a very "heroic journey", but you will reach the final destination all the same.

You may prefer games where you have more variety in armor customization or bag space or stat enhancing items. Many of those features are also available in NWO, but they cost extra.

I swear the world is being coddled into thinking socialist ideas are ok.

How about the saying "you get what you pay for"?

These Devs didn't sit at home for months straight and then say to themselves, "hell lets give this away.  We'll even eat the server costs.  Free money to all!  Viva la Revolution!"

I happen to spend less on a F2P game in 6 months than I do on a P2p game in 6 months.  This is the closest to free I've seen without being cut off unfairly at the knees.

i agree that nothing is free, but at least compared between quality mmo's, RIFT 's F2P model is by far the best in market.

1st we need to get out of the biggest lie and that is called BETA !!!

What a lie that is.

They say it is open beta, FINE!!!

If the game is in "beta" phase then we should get everything for free to test it.

Maybe $40 mount is bugged and don`t move like it should, maybe we should get repec for free so we can explore options and see that there are balance problems or things like that !!!

Instead we are paying for playing open beta game so they can give us excesses if they make some mistakes like: "We know that there are still problems but we are still in BETA phase".

Their free model is fine and i agree that if you want full commodity you need to give some money for it but resetting talents should be paid in in game currency.

Be smart and the world is free. The clue is not to enslave yourself and drop stuff when people want to get at you. No, no theft. Things like "Hey try this yummy cake!" - "Mmmh, so good. can I eat it all?" - "yeah sure, all yours." - "oh deli, cya later" - "wait I got this thing to do, can you help me?" and there you are.

If you can drop the concept of guilt, you are a free man. No, guilt aswell has nothing to do with being "good or bad". The universe does not care if you are good or bad. If your decisions help you with the expansion of your being, then you are good to go.

Neverwinter IS free (excluding paying electricity and internet). I went 1-60 without buying anything. Had ... abit ... of fun in PvP and PvE. Deinstalled. Done. Free game, free experience. Went in each corner a guy went by paying 200$. With the exception that I did not pay anything.

*hears the guilt-traing rolling - But whatabout supporting the devs?? - HAHA with such a game that had such a lazy development process behind it - NO, thanks*

Cya.

1-60 done all end game content have mount/bags/companions....all without spending a single dime. L2p f2p games, Rift/NWO/Tera/etc all have awsome f2p models where you do not have to spend anything to enjoy those games....where as SOE should get a clue and you should stay away from those games as they limit you via equipment instead of space/slots/etc.

Rift is COMPLETELY ... like completely, completely (Full PvP and PvE access) enjoyable FOR FREE?

Cryptic offers pretty much that for Champions Online and, to a lesser degree, Star Trek Online. Subscribers have access to certain items (not all) in the cash shop as long as they're paying for a subscription while free players have to pay for each item individually.

I don't have the link to post that crunched the numbers anymore (lost in the transition from Cryptic's forum to PWE's forum), but in Champions Online a free player basically has to shell out something like $500 to get all the same benefits as a subscriber (thus the $300 lifetime subscription is actually worth it) in addition to all the extra items that both free and paid players have to pay for.

Now I haven't actually played Star Trek Online, but by all accounts subscribing in STO is simply not worth it. A subscriber doesn't have much of an advantage over free players, and both groups have to pay top dollar for character-specific unlocks (such as crew and starship models) with abilities that scale to pricing, so it's closer to a pure cash shop model than a two-tiered model.

Now here's the rub: CO is horribly neglected, STO is getting a lot of developer love, and NWO is fully embracing the "sucker born every minute" model of microtransactions.

Two-tiered sounds nice in theory, but I'm afraid it seems Cryptic has decided the sucker model is more profitable.

People don't have the same tastes as you do, some of us enjoy a challenge, others are entitled little pricks that feel like everything in the game should be free, fast and loose, these two are on a hypothetical level of course and do not reflect on anyone within the thread, merely stating fact.

For the Queen!

5/17/13 7:23:08 AM#12

I've only spent $10...that's 1/6 of what a new game should cost...no complaints here XD  I got 3 level 60s and working on my 4th...it's not entirely free, but for my first 2 level 60s it was.  I just don't get why people complain.  Neverwinter is one of the best f2p models.  You can literally play everything without spending a dime.  There really isn't much of a hindrance to your character either.

I can see how you complain about the prices, they are like double what others would charge, but you can't complain about it not being free.

Well then they should stop promoting and hyping their games as though that's exactly what they're doing.

Cryptic's cash shops are a travesty.  But as far as content goes, they are among the best at allowing complete access.  There is no comparison in this aspect when matched up against the LOTROs, SWTORs, and EQ2s of the world.

While I agree some items need adjustment in the store, I disagree with your opinion that it's not free.

#1 mount training is free, that's right. They have tier 1 mount training and don't even charge in game charges for it. No AD so no struggling at level 20 to get the training. Tier 1 mounts also cost very little of one of their in game currencies, gold. No saving or struggling there either. Most sub games aren't even like that.

#2 bag space. There are currently two quests along the path of getting to level 20 that give you medium bags to hold items. The rest are in the store. They are 6 or 10 dollars right now which is a bit steep however they are hardly enormously priced.

#3 All the end game gear you can get for free. Yep all it takes is gameplay even for us filthy casuals like myself. No store cost just to convert it to gold to be able to buy things like I've experienced in games like GW2 where for many of us the only way to make gold is to convert it from gems because of how they've mishandled loot and the acquisition of loot in their game. NWO you don't worry about such things, there is no such thing as DR in NWO. And items aren't limited to only certain parts of the world. WvW and dungeons are the only real places to get drops in GW2 for the solo player or the filthy casual whereas you can farm the more open zones in NWO unrestricted.

#4 Companions. In game companions are also not nerfed to death once you reach the higher levels on your toon. Sure they could have been to force people to buy new companions immediately. On my level 30 cleric my companion level 15 pocket tank holds his own without losing an enormous amount of hitpoints with each enemy swing because he's build to hold aggro and keep the enemies from killing him outright. You know how much he cost me? in game gold. You know what I can do I can get any number of other companions for the same prices without ever touching the store that are just as useful. Would the store companions be better? Yep. They prolly are, but you pay for the better ones, it's not crazy difficult.

So you know what that makes this game? Exactly what they said it would be.

~~ In this market that's a beautiful thing, because I've been burned by companies like Anet that promised 1 thing and delivered something entirely different just after launch just because they felt like throwing out 7 years of interviews. (which they are currently scrambling to get to disappear off the net so new players can't see what they said it would be).

So I guess what I'm saying is this, could be worse, could be made by Anet. (a wholy owned subsidiary of Nexon)

The game has been truly free to me, I have a lvl 60 that I specd carefully to avoid the cost of respec, so I havent spent a cent.

Nor will I ever spend any money on NW.

It is 100% free to play to me, it was an enjoyable ride, but the lack of content and rampant exploits at 60 have done it for me.

The title of this thread drew me in like a shark to a tiny morsel of a woman swimming out in the ocean. Firstly, I don;t really think you are educated enough in the game to formulate an opinion as biased as yours.

Cryptic in no manner, shape or form have lied about the content of this game. The game is Free to play, with cash shop support (essentially meaning the cash shop funds the game).

Nothing in the cash shop helps or hinders your gaming experience. Some stuff is convenient such as a larger bag, but not a requirement nor needed to enjoy the game.

You can have a very complete experience 1 to 60 without any need of the Zen shop services.   It appears to me, you logged in and saw a 'cash shop' and took immediate dislike to it. Well, sadly that's on you for being bull-headed about it.

What alternative do they have in honest, subscription models are dying and only giants are able to keep them up to be profitable. Cash shops are going to be needed to fund the game, they don't work for free. Would you work for free?

Also, what alternative would you suggest? Cosmetics only? That's all well and good, I love cosmetics but convenience items always sell more and in Neverwinter there is a healthy trade of people selling those items for AD (in game cash equiv) and for Gold. You have a means to get all you could ever want without ever spending a single red cent and if I am honest, its not even much of a grind.

My only concern with cash shops is whether things are Pay to win, and thankfully from playing the game on 4 characters (yes I bought 2 more slots) and leveling them one up to 60, one 40, one 30 and one mid 20's I have yet to find myself requiring anything off the cash shop as a must have. Everything I wanted, I traded for.

Please reply, fast.

yes it is

No, you can go 1-60 , but the Storm Legion souls are not Free

They can be http://raptr.com/game/Rift/rewards/rift-storm-legion I am 2 hours away from claiming my key and I will be perfectly blunt: Do not put in the time, do not get free stuff (you need around 13-14 hours of playtime which you can amass on a trial account as you get enough to do for 13-14 hours on one and afterward you upgrade it and spend the last month playing sub while waiting for the F2P to hit).
