Like the title says, I am building a pc on a $1300 budget. I don't need any peripherals, just the tower and everything inside of it please. This is just going to be used for general media (movies/music) as well as gaming. I would like to be able to run any recent game on maxed out settings without a problem.

I appreciate the help, and I would like to shop through Newegg because I have a credit line with them!

Have you ever cruised: http://pcpartpicker.com/

I can scroll through it for hours.  You can make tons of builds, it pulls pricing from newegg and others (I think you can filter to simply newegg) and it automatically filters for compatibility.

how on earth is 1300 a budget pc, you can build a real beast.

first of all bookmark www.Newegg.com

secondly bookmark http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Highend: (Half the cost of intel)

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-8350+Eight-Core&id=1780#price

and build from there.

UPDATE:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113285 - 10% off promo until 5/15 so 160$

You have to do Nvidia though for a GPU as ATI just has too many performance issues with titles too often these days. Outside of having a 4-500$ card and getting like 60fps in Darkfall....

CPU - intel i5-3570k $235

CPU Fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 120mm $37

GPU - GTX 660ti MSI PE $340

MOBO - ASUS P8Z77-V LK $140

Memory - 8 GB 1600 Mhz $66

PSU - Corsair Enthusiast TX 650M Semi-Modular $100

SATA - 128 GB SSD $110

          - 1 TB Hard Drive $110

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium  $100

This is around $1250 range. Add a $50 case of your liking and voila. I didn't calculate any shipping costs and such so it will be a little over your budget. You can always not get SSD and have your system run slower if you want to cut on some cost.

As has already been echoed here a couple times you can built a real state of the art system (minus stupid, and for the most part pointless, upgrades) for the price you listed if you it's truly only designated to the tower and internal hardware.  Perhaps you can give some other "likes" such as silence, size, and/or maximum GFX settings overall all else as a specific "want".  Only then, considering the budget, can anyone offer any real meaningful advice.

As I read it, he wasn't saying he wanted a budget computer as opposed to a higher end.  He was saying he was willing to spend $1300 on a computer.

The problem with those CPU benchmarks is that they assume that programs will scale well to arbitrarily many cores.  While games aren't hard to scale decently well if you know that you need to do it right from the start, you're not going to get perfect scaling, and some games won't scale well at all.

Dismissing AMD out of hand on a video card is just silly.  Yeah, they'll have some glitches with some games, but they'll usually get fixed.  Nvidia will have some glitches with some games, too--and those will also usually get fixed.

Why are you linking to a Canadian web site?  Also, why an enterprise hard drive for consumer use?  Your SSD link doesn't go to an SSD at all.  And that's way too much to pay for that video card and power supply.

No offense but thats just BS on the ATI GPU. I think the more likely culprit is bad coding on the part of DF:U ( big shocker I know)

I am not an ATI fanboy by any means, but thats just wrong and misinformed.

Edit: the guy has $1300 to spend and your steering him towards and AMD FX cpu? On that budget Intel all the way. I have nothing against AMD and have used them for years, my old gaming rig ( now 2nd comp.) is an AMD. On that kind of budget no reason not to go Intel.

Thanks for the help so far guys, I'll just clarify that what Quiz said above is correct. I am not saying that I want a budget computer, I was stating that my budget is $1300. I would prefer to purchase my parts from Newegg and I live in the US.

So far there is a lot of people giving reasons why others parts are not correct for a build, if anyone else has some more suggestions I would gladly take them! My biggest confusion usually comes with picking a motherboard/psu. I'd prefer to go with an Intel cpu because my latest one I used has worked greatly. I also usually go with AMD for GPU simply because it is what I used on my first computer and haven't used anything since due to never running into any problems that were serious.

Thanks

CD Drive $15 after code:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289

922 Case, $90 after discount +10 mail in rebate to make it $80 in the end.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197

Intel i5-3570K cpu $220

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

1 TB WD 7200 RPM HD $70

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339

Corsair 2x4 GB DDR3 1600 memory $63

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233180

Gigabyte GA-Z77-HD4 MB $102 after discount code, $4 shipping, $10 mail in rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128580

XFX 7970 Ghz edition 3GB, plus 3 free games $450 and a $30 mail in rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

Rosewill 630W 80+ bronze power supply $52 after code, $3 shipping.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182200

Windows 7 or 8 $100 from Newegg, can find it for probably $80-85 or less if you shop around elsewhere or wait on a deal, they have Windows 8 for $80 fairly often.

Cooler master 212 evo $30 with $5 mail in rebate if you want a aftermarket, or something else, but it'll be $20-30

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=35-103-099&Tpk=35-103-099

Total $1196 with shipping, $55 in mail in rebates to knock it down to around $1150.  You could definitely cut back some on the case, video card, probably knock off 5-10 on the memory if you get 1333 with no heat spreaders...

You could also do this, and get a 128 GB SSD drive if you wanted and still come in around $1300

Too bad they didn't have the ASUS MB i5-3570K combo still for $299 that I just bought.

EDIT : I was spending your $1300, I am sure if you want to squeeze the budget, you could cut a good deal off and go lower, my aim was to spend the $1300 on good stuff.  You could definitely get the stuff I listed and add a SSD for the $1300.  I am just not a SSD expert to tell you which 128 GB SSD is a good price and reliable, someone else would have to help there probably.

I'm not really doing links, but, if I had a $1300 build, I would look at

(*) Intel i5 3570k
(*) Heat-pipe based or AIO watercooled aftermarket CPU cooler (nothing too fancy needed, but something aside from stock heat sink)
(*) Asus P8Z77 Motherboard - specific version depending on exact needs (I would also look at MSI or Gigabyte equivalent models depending on sales)
(*) Either nVidia 670GTX or ATI 7950 ~ish level graphics depending on what's on sale and what color graphics chip you wanted. This is the big variable in price - not knowing what the other prices come in at total, you can swing your budget a few hundred dollars just by shifting around your video card.
(*) 8G DDR3 RAM - unspecified speed or vendor, but solid timing, voltage, and warranty (9-9-9- or less, 1.5V or less, PC1333 or greater)
(*) 240G+ SSD - model depending on sale
(*) 1T 7200 bulk data drive - model depending on sale - WD Blue or some such
(*) 600-650W Solid PSU (Corsair, Seasonic, etc) - exact model depending on what's on sale
(*) Case to suit taste
(*) Random generic SATA DVD-RW
(*) Win7/8 OEM License

peripherals as needed

Hello I'm Canadian sorry. Anyways.... Modular power supply will always cost you more, but you will get a better airflow in your case. Corsair is in my opinion the best supplier of psu and you don't want to risk damaging any of your things because of cheap psu. GPU is personal. If he knows how to overclock it himself then all power to him, but for those who like it overclocked already then msi has probably the best one out of 660ti.

660ti is bad value for money

Either go one lower with a 660gtx or go higher with a 670 or 7950

You could get a very nice power supply for $100, but Corsair's TXM power supplies aren't.  In value for the money, the various SKUs of GeForce GTX 660 Ti range from mediocre to awful, so even if you find the least bad of them, it's not likely to be any good.  Besides, overclocking the GPU doesn't do much good when you're mostly constrained by memory bandwidth.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182200

I'd get a much better power supply than that on a $1300 budget.  You'd definitely also want a good SSD, as you mentioned.  Add an OS license and sales tax and you're well over budget.  The video card is the easiest place to cut back.

first of all bookmark www.Newegg.com

secondly bookmark http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

Highend: (Half the cost of intel)

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-8350+Eight-Core&id=1780#price

and build from there.

UPDATE:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113285 - 10% off promo until 5/15 so 160$

You have to do Nvidia though for a GPU as ATI just has too many performance issues with titles too often these days. Outside of having a 4-500$ card and getting like 60fps in Darkfall....

Don't argue with me guy... I have never said something to purposely bash a product outside of reality. Rift also had problems with ATI game was literally unplayable for 5850 and lower line for a while it would crash constantly. I never said it wasn't the programming either I specifically said Nvidia is better and it is, it has been better for a long time and all reviews and ratings determine the same thing so game companies apparently spend more time working with Nvidia then ATI.

I'm very strongly skeptical that Rift would be unplayable on a Radeon HD 5850.  The minimum specs list an ATI Radeon X300.  Most likely, you were doing something wrong.

I'm not lying for the sake of lying... There's no point I'm actually skeptical you as a MMO player who surfs forums aren't aware of all the game launch ati or crossfire problems so many MMO's have had over the years most likely due to them working more with Nvidia. Do they eventually get sorted out? yeah sure do but who wants to say I spent 300$ on a graphics card so I can play any game 1-2 months after launch without GPU conflicts instead of 300$ and not have them to begin with.

I never said you were lying.  I think you just have a PEBCAK on your hands and don't realize it.

And CrossFire?  What does that have to do with anything?  Multi-GPU setups are for a very narrow niche, and there's no reason to consider one on a $1300 budget.
