My view is that there is one legitimate reason to pirate games:  if you did pay for a legal copy of the game and the developers got paid that way, but for whatever reason, you're unable to play the copy you already paid for.  For example, if you lost the DVD, or if you bought a new computer that is incompatible with the original for some reason, such as not having a floppy drive.  Or if, ironically enough, the legal version has such intrusive DRM that you can't get it to work, but the pirated version works fine.

I like it!

I added some code to our commercial software ($200K a copy) to try to catch people who tried to cheat. It was locked to a specific machine, using a node ID. If they tried to hack the license file, our software would run about 1/2 of the way through, and then error out with an "Internal Error". The error code was the illegal machine id!

RIP City of Heroes. One of my favorite MMO's.

Take my advice, I'm not using it anyway.

To me, pirating is a sign of the market failing, whichever it is that's been pirated from. If your software is easier or more appealing to torrent than it is to pay for, the individual company/developer/studio needs to find a more efficient way to push content to users, as quickly as possible, and most often adjust their standard for pricing into a much, much lower range. Spending more effort and resources creating DRM isn't really helping the situation for them, either, because it's not really preventing anyone from pirating anything at this point in time.

So basically, if you can't create DRM so intrusive that it's cheaper to pay $50 than to find a pirated version for free, then you're not allowed to charge $50?  Do you really want the entire world to be forced to go to always-online DRM?

If I were in the business, I'd absolutely prefer the DRM solution to be always online. As a player of games, I'm not really excited about the idea, but it's a pretty instantaneous and permanent solution to the problem, isn't it?

Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the priviledge to do so as well.

It doesn't really matter what system/procedure you implement. There will always be people out there wanting it for nothing, and those willing to crack it. It will never change. This is not something new.

As simple as someone looting a store during a riot. If the consequences to commiting that act are low to non existent, some will invariably tempt fate.

I think you're mostly correct, but price has far more to do with preventing pirating than I think you're giving credit.

Maybe for some, but generally the pirates and those that get the free booty (pun intended ) tend to do it because they can. Why pay for something when you can get it for free. Like that saying about getting cow milk for free etc.?

You may limit the amount who will but it will never go away. Why should it? It's too easy to stray and give in.

Same here! $7.99, I cannot resist :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Proper pirates don't steal from struggling indie companies, those that do are just stingy thieves with no sense of morality.

That  being said, this has to be the first game that actually has content for video game thieves, I find that interesting and the concept could even be explored further.

At any rate, GJ to these guys, they made history and found a clever way to advertize their game without spending a dime.

Currently playing: Football Manager 2015.

Getting more kicks out of a single player sports RPG than any MMO on the market. A sad state of affairs indeed...

No reasoning with thiefs!

I've been buying my games since the 80's and so forth, yes I have purchased  , recieved bad games but I will always continue to buy games, why? Because it is a past time that I enjoy and I also like to support the devs. We know people like Ichmen, they do not know what is right and wrong, thats clear by his response in justifying his attitude, and its people like him that cause people to loose their jobs in the first place.

If a company has said game to sell, and they have a quota to meet, and say that 90% of their game is pirated ( Stolen ) well they have to recomp some of their cost and doing so they have to let go some of their staff, so yes , stealing hurts everyone, why do you think most corporations have security forces in place? They want to make sure that their property is safe hence why we now have the DRM, because of stuff like this.

Thiefs hurt everyone and that includes people like us who actualy buy the product in the first place, just more scum of the earth and people like that need to be black listed through all the service providers, since they can't behave themselves.

Ok scrap the "made history" part then.

Which game(s) were you thinking of?

Serious Sam 3 had the giant, invulnerable scorpion that chased and attacked the player non stop if it was the pirated version.

While not content per say, the original Operation Flashpoint introduced a single new bug into the game every time the game launched if it detected it was a pirated version, so slowly the game would become unplayable.

And iirc, pirated versions of the original Earthbound had a screen warning that piracy was a crime that the legitimate game did not have, and then proceeded to make the game significantly harder than it actually is; up until the last fight, where it's guaranteed to freeze so the game is uncompletable.

But that's all off the top of my head. I'm positive there's many more, but this one is quickly one of my favorites, heh heh.
