Would I prefer to play a new game with old game design rather than the modern, accessible one? hell yeah!

There's no MMO released since 2009 that is worth to even log on, so I can very well save my money and spend my free time playing those old and ugly games as f2p.

Try since 2004 :/ Though Vanguard and Darkfall are close.

On hiatus for a while guys, MMOs still aren't interesting me.

Games have gotten better... Standards have skyrocketed though... That's why players are unsatisfied, going back in time would profit gamers little, most good classics are still running, the only thing to gain is another brush with popularity booms in certain games.

Should have made a poll on this.   Would be nice to see how it would have done, given that you don't have to be vocal to participate.  I understand wanting a reason for X or Y though.

They butchered EQ.  For the last few years, it has been just a shimmer of its former self.  That leaves only one option, which I can't speak of, to actually "go back" to what it was.

So you could say you can't go back even if you wanted to.. and in a sense that's right.  But ehh.. You *can*.

That said, if I could go back I would - but only if all of the following were true.

1)  Visuals, as you said, would be "fresh" again

2)  I had the time to play that I once did.  Even though I was in my 20's when EQ came out, I had a lot more time to devote to MMORPGs.

3)  All of my old friends, and the first guild I created (which required an actual GM and was a ceremony), were there as well.

So yeah.. If this and that, then goback();

Playing: EverQuest, RiFT, Defiance, APB:Reloaded
Mourning: World of Darkness, Vanguard, City of Heroes

The thing I miss most about the 'old days' is the real sense of community you got on an MMORPG.

My favourite would have been Mir2 - the community on there back in the day was fantastic, you just don't get that anymore nowadays. I'm not sure if its because of a change in the mentality, or the design of the game, but I'd definitely without a doubt go back to those days.

I don't like the MMORPGs of today, not sure if I would want to play any of the old school ones right now either.  I could defnitely go back to Vanguard if and only if they brought back the FFA PVP server and it had a healthy population.  That server is the most fun I have ever had playing MMORPGs despite all the horrible bugs/problems at launch.  The open PVP in that game was just fun as hell with a large population.  It had tab target combat which is lame but the skills that they had in that game were so unique and cool that the combat was actually a blast.

Things weren't balanced well but everything felt kind of overpowered.  I remember how excited I was when I killed my first Cleric, since they were practically impossible to kill (though not particularly dangerous)  I remember being chased by a sorcerer almost dead and teleporting behind the guy and murdering him.   I remember how pets were so buggy that it was really hard to target them, and this made the crappy pet classes viable.   I remember how Bards made there group members flicker in and out of invisibility and could keep a player incapacitated for however long they felt like it.  I remember how druids could do an enormous amount of damage with one spell, so you had to be wary.  I remember how Blood Mages could siphon health off an enemy and redirect it to an ally.   I remember how Paladins had a low level skill that was bugged to do enormous damage in PVP, but the tooltip was so bad that few people bothered.  When you saw a paladin though you RAN!!  I remember when running through New Targenor always meant someone would try and kill you so you had to be hyper alert.  With all the fixes now that game would be great if they re added the FFA PVP server with the same system of gold looting that they had before.

The bugs, crashes, falling through the environment, gold duping ect. really killed the games population and somewhere along the line they merged servers and decided the FFA server was not needed.  I hate PVE so end sub there.  When I think back on MMORPGs that is the one I think i liked the most...

Currently about 10 friends of mine and I are playing an unofficial "older" version (circa 2003) of a MMORPG and loving the old school feel and mechanics.

I enjoy the slow grinding, challenges of npc's that resist different abilities/weapons, and the "surprise factor", when sometimes, for some reason the npc just resists all attacks and kills me flat.. (requiring a nice long horse ride back to pick up my grave after healing back my con)

When I joined them recently I expressed my inability to find pleasure in modern mmo's for more than a short time and as one person put it, "you are probably too intelligent to stick with those for very long".

Uhhh, yeah, that's it, too smart for them, that's my story and sticking to it.

Nah. I learned pretty quickly that I didn't like MMORPGs of the time.

Still playing FFXI and i will until they shut it down. No fancy new game with shiny graphics is even close. Some of the new games are fun, but like above poster said, i feel insulted by the hand holding and easy mode.

Maybe... An interesting hypothesis :)

If I could go back, MMO-wise, I would probably try out other games that I never tried back then.

Older Single Player Games, though, I still play today. Any time I feel the desire, as I often do.

Games have improved in many ways over what we had way back when. In other ways, they are surely lacking. Some of the headaches older games handed out, newer games have rectified, while creating new headaches as well as losing some of the "good parts" of the older games.

Overall, I don't think I would, though it could be tempting :) Thanks to DOSBox and the like, many old games can still be played today.

- Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Same here with Ultima Online.  Reactivated my account it was terrible.  I felt like how Marty McFly felt when he went back to an alternative 1985.

No need. All the old games are stil there and you can get them one way or another and play them. There's more games out there from the past than any person can play in thier lifetime.

Purely from a gaming standpoint, you don't need to go back.

In a heartbeat.  Other than a brief foray into SWTOR and TSW, I haven't played a modern game in years.  I keep replaying classic rpgs like Baldur's Gate and the M&M series, modern games look great but play like shit.  MMOs are the worst of the lot.

I would go back if I could tell developers not to make MMOs with super graphics that won't run well on thier minimum or even reccomended specs.  I'm sorry but playing a game with a computer that has better than the suggested computer spec, but only getting 10 fps in some areas...yeah that's really playable, I'd hate to see what they play like on minimum specs lol.  In my 22+ years of playing MMOs, I think I've noticed that the vast majority of MMO players take graphics as a secondary thing, gameplay is always number one.

I would happily go back to 2003, eve and planetside were the new mmos on the block. Daoc wasn't totally ruined and EQ was still semi non elitist.

Yes. I'd go back to play more SWG pre-CU and accomplish everything that I always thought I'd have time later to do in-game.

That's the thing, it was awful before when you played it, you just didn't know any better.  Now that you do, you can't go play it again.  That's something people who want to go back to old school games overlook.  They're running on pure nostalgia and wishful thinking.  Those games sucked then but they had no other frame of reference.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more

No

I love those games for their time, but I enjoy where mmos have gone (generally speaking). Besides, I'm not a graphics fiend so if I really wanted to I would have no problem playing EQ again if I felt the nostalgia for it.

The only genre I have missed for a while thankfully seems to be on the return thanks to the likes of Shadowrun Returns, Divinity, Torment, Wasteland 2, etc. That was an era of gaming I have sorely missed and seemed dormant for some time. However, seems there will be quite a few of those games out soon to whet my appetitie.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
