Obviously if there is a demo available try that but they don't always give a full representation of the game either.

Normally you just have to use your gut feeling whether you will like a game, and you are normally right.

I see what you're saying, though I kind of feel more like 70ish is my "has potential" threshhold. For example, SimCity is at 64, and I wouldn't touch that thing with a remote control, based on what I've read of it.

EDIT: And then you get some wierd ones like Diablo 3, which has an 88 metascore. However the user score is 3.8. How does that happen?

Sometimes it's just really split. For instance, Defiance at this moment has 68 with a user score of 6.8. Compare that the 88 and the 3.8 of D3.

You're example is a prime reason why I look at both the professional metascore and the user metascore. With a disparity in scores such as you describe, it's a really good idea to read a couple professional reviews and at least 2 high rated user reviews and 2 low rated user reviews. Gamers are the best judge of the game, but have a hard time articulating their thoughts into a revew, so lots of reading inbetween the lines is needed along with extensive experience in the genre of games you're looking at.

However, when the professional and user metascore is pretty close, it's a solid indicator that the game deserves that score. I'd steer clear of Defiance in this regard.

Depends. If it's a game I have any real interest in I've likely been tracking it for a bit and have a decent idea of whether or not I want it. Chances are I won't ever know or care what the Metascore is. However, if I'm going through a list of games on sale somewhere, or looking at something in the bargain bin, chances are I'll look at Metascore, read a few of the good and bad reviews, and what I see there may weigh heavily.

No, and none.

You know i used to just trust metascores, but recently i bought tales of graces f, which had a lower meta score than ff 13 for some reason, and i enjoyed tales of graces a ton more than i did ff13. Tales of grace has a 76% score, ff 13 has a 84% score. Now i may start really looking into anything that has a 70% score or higher.I guss with some games they gona get a good score because of their popularity and history of the series.

Metascores are more useful for publishers than for gamers, primarily because it shows the extent of the coverage and the likelihood of further coverage. The more scores there are and the higher the scores, the more likely it is that follow up news and press releases will be relayed. It also indicates how much of the media is likely to jump on the next installment when news of it breaks.

I consider a lot of factors. I don't always consider such scores knowing they can be off for certain games that I might really like if I had given them a try. On the other hand, they can influence my decision to take a risk in certain situations.

I've been looking at a game on Steam which had a metascore rating of 70 yesterday. I checked a little while ago and it's down to 67.

How do you look at metascores when making your decisions about whether to buy or not?

EDIT: Has there ever been a game that had a relatively low metascore (on Steam for example) that you bought and enjoyed and thought deserved better?

I pay no attention whatsoever to metascores. I have recently started ignoring game review scores as well, since I find them to be unreliable.

I may read some reviews and look at the scores, but usually make up my own mind. Some games with really high scores I know I wont like, and I have really enjoyed other games with lower scores.

But to answer the question I put very little weight to meta scores.

I don't have much to add that has not already been said. But, I will post a link towards contributing, to metacritics stated process for how they create their meta scores for peoples reference here:

And would like to be clear that Metascores are the intelectual property of CBS Interactive incorperated and come with the user rating (typically). That is to say that any site showing a metascore is sourcing them. Which also means this meta scoring is standardized accross various review sites that utilize it (they can't even legally say meta score if it is not a score from metacritic). And, that is just all to say that a meta scoring is not a generic term for rating a game that a given site may legally do on its own. But, proprietary to CBS service that doesn't (or at least shouldn't) differ from site to site that uses them.

Curiosity really, not much else.  I spend more time reviewing the in depth comments of others prior to making game purchases. (well usually)

Arrogant, Condescending, Dismissive, Elitist, "Meany", you speak as if these are bad things?

Absolutely nothing.  There's only one reviewer I trust, and that's myself.

Edit: On second thought, I don't even trust myself sometimes lol.

I intend to live forever -- So far so good!

I don't look at sites like metacritic or the like.  If i hear of a game that might be entertaining I seek out videos of it's content that show the game from as many different angles as possible.  However if a game is due to be out I usually find a way to get my hands on it before I buy it.  I have a few friends that must have the newest games and be the first to dive into things so I use them to get at the games that I think have potential with no cost to me.  I'll either go over and try it there, or have their "friend keys" and do it myself.  The other option I have at my disposal is a fair number of internet cafe's in my city that have rabid fanbois who play all kinds of games.  I can easily take 1 hour out of my life and go there and just have a look around.  I find the best game reviewer are my eyes and ears when I see the product, and nothing is really stopping me from asking questions right there and then to have certain things demostrated to me.

I've blown money on games I thought would be good without trying them first and regret it.  Ever since I started making sure I play before I buy, I've managed to save a decent amount of money and avoided games that quite a few of my friends jumped on only to quit a month later complaining that they wasted money.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Reviews or metacritic scores have almost no bearing on my purchases.

Reviews are opinions, which are like assholes.

Metacritic scores are therefore just a bunch of assholes.

I pretty much never look at Metacritic before I purchase anything (unless I happen to see one on Steam before buying), but I find that most of them are pretty damned accurate overall.

Excepting the rare occasions when I'm convinced reviewers are wrong I won't buy anything below 80 or 4 user rate. No way in hell.

Same with movies, generally I find reviews are spot on my taste. Excepting a very small amount of the time.

That said, I'm still dissapointed with many things that get above 80, so I have to again be picky about what I want in that bracket.

None, I really don't care about meta scores.

I consider a lot of factors. I don't always consider such scores knowing they can be off for certain games that I might really like if I had given them a try. On the other hand, they can influence my decision to take a risk in certain situations.

I know what type of games I like, however I do view or read reviews, some games I don't need info example tried to stay away from to much Biochock Infinity info. But the moment I heard about that game I already knew it would be a instant buy and will find out myself if I truly enjoy it. (And I sure do) If I'm on a threshold I try to wait for a demo or trail to play.

I've been looking at a game on Steam which had a metascore rating of 70 yesterday. I checked a little while ago and it's down to 67.

Ask yourself, do all those who play games enjoy the excact same things you enjoy? Same with those ratings.

How do you look at metascores when making your decisions about whether to buy or not?

 As said I don't

EDIT: Has there ever been a game that had a relatively low metascore (on Steam for example) that you bought and enjoyed and thought deserved better?

Sorry since I don't look at metascore's hard to say.

OP  i only give weight to metascores if it gives very high ratings to my precious. Otherwise i just brush it aside as being immature, un professional and waste of time.

What? why you looking at me like that? haven't you seen a hypocrite before?

none what so ever. Most of the people on here/there lie about games anyway.

I only take reviews and metascores into consideration when I am on the fence about a game. I do the initial research and leg work first, try the game out with open betas, free trials, and or demos next, decide on whether I am truly interested or not, if I can't decide then and only then will I look at reviews and metascores from other players, if for some reason I am still undecided I may look at professional reviewers and their metascores.

So as far as weight and importance for me in order...

1) My own

2) Other players

3) Professional reviewers. These guys are the last place I look if I bother to look there when making my decision.

I look at reviews more for their points for/against a game then I do at scores. Scores never work, and often times are heavily inflated. Good example is Bioshock Infinite. Amazing game mind you, by far one I'd recomend anyone play at least once just for the story, but its not really 10/10 as it has combat flaws and other things for me that hold it back.
