Can someone summarize what the main activities are in the game?

I understand these are not typical themepark activities, since the game has been labeled as "sandbox".

But just to have an idea. If you play for about 3 hours, what are you doing during those 3 hours? For how long? Like 20 minutes TP? What else?

I love games like Darkfall, will play the new one and Arche Age and any other legit sand box but this games combat is slow and far too different for my taste. Was not enjoyable in the least I really wanted it to be as I really wanted a game in this Era. Oh well.

You will do fedex missions for the first few hours. That auto-run you to each spot. Seldom will any of these quest involve combat. You can craft and gather for a small amount of time then you need to wait till the next day for it to recharge. Once you hit level 5 you can join a guild.

My guild is currently escorting a pony up a hill over and over for a repeatable guild quest.

Uh, the guild thing is tied to story progress not level so everything else stated must be discounted as fallacy as well...

I will agree this isn't a PvE game.  The missions are a mean to an end.  But in the 4 hrs I played lastnight, for free, I was entertained.

I usually start with some spying (not for the exp anymore but for honor badges), followed by a short patrol duty - longer if there are several spies around to kill.

Then I go kidnap someone, usually in Jinling. My favourite kidnapping spot is right next to the posion maker there so usually I'll stop by him and play some minigames and fetch my daily life skill quest.

Then I do some farming (mostly ore and posion herbs, but sometimes actual farming, depending on what seeds I've gotten lately) while I wait for my buddy to come online. This may involve PvP if there issome other guy camping my nodes.

When my friend is online, we go cart robbing. We have our favourite ambush points and if they are slow we'll jump around a bit and see if there are more action elsewhere. Then we might  run some challenges for rep, but those are pretty boring so normally we only do 2-3 runs before moving on.

If there's more time I'll try some instance, or just hang around town, do some shopping/selling, TP, or go explore some remote area. I still haven't seen all places in this game.

There are lots of other stuff to do, but since I'm in the EU I always miss the main events like script stealing, guild wars, school wars, etc, which is a shame and also affects my char's monetary situation. One thing I strongly dislike about Wushu is the timed events - it's very non-sandboxy and it also makes a big portion of the playerbase unable to particiapte in major game content.

That all sounds like a pretty well rounded day to me.  I was going to roll a beggar on White Tiger but decided on Royal Guards instead so I could do more things without my school frowning  on it.  I also really like the look of their school uniforms.  I'm ready to start trying my hand at kidnapping and spying.

I liked MMOs better when gamers didn't play them, and just geeks did.

4/11/13 7:10:05 AM#9

I've enjoyed sandbox MMOs in the past, such as WURM and EVE, so I figured I would like this game as well. At first, I was lost, but I pushed on and after a few hours began to wrap my brain around the basics of the game. I was happy. However, after about 30 hours in, I quickly realized that the game is essentially logging in, doing your daily gathering/tradeskill/quests, maybe shop through the market, kidnap an offline player and do some PvP.

The game has some good things going for it. It's immersive, which is a big checkmark for me. It's pretty, it's open and the movement skills are fun to play around with. For me though, that's pretty much it in its current state. It needs more time to ripen IMO.

Playing: ESO

Played: AC1, AC2, AO, AoC, CO, CoX, DAoC, DCUO, DN, EVE, EQ1, EQ2,
FE, FFXI, FFXIV, FF, GW1, GW2, Istaria, L2, LoTRO, MO, MxO, NW, Rift, RoE,
Ryzom, SB, SWG, SWTOR, TERA, TSW, WAR, WoW, WURM...

Just like in any MMO... I'm surprised that someone w/ such a game list states something so obvious like a 1st timer...

And you could totally skip any of the part you mentionned if you don't like it. Well, PvP isn't easy to avoid in Wushu but you could.

and then you forgot to mention : Events, arenas, guild wars, school wars, PKing, Anti-PKing (witch is rewarded), "farming" instances, script sctealing, building the guild base... etc , etc, etc...

Since you have guild bases  and guild wars.. you have politics and diplomaty...

So no really, AoW is not just about logging in and doing dailys and "some" PvP....

Old school french hardcore whiner. Online since T4C.

I was "Namless" and "Daroot" in AO (Rk2)
Recently known as "Vindicar" (Aion (EU), SWTOR (EU), WoW (EU).
Actually Known as "Wundicar" in Age of Wushu (US)

Not sure why people keep calling this game a sandbox, its as much a sandbox as TSW is.  Same with Arche Age.

Both games are themeparks with a few rides that could appear in a sandbox, but overall the game is a themepark with a super linear storyline.

People being dissapointed in this, for that reason, are a direct result of people attempting to sell the game by any means, even if it means being less than truthfull about the game, which imo does the game a dissservice.

I can agree here with some posters, i played for about 10 hours total, most of that was autopathing doing boring quests.  I cant buy anything from any player shop because i dont have the cash shop money, which restricts me to lame weapons...not that there was ever a reason for me to fight a mob.  Even with that the NPC store weapons seem to run their corse fairly quick, and if your not into the time it takes to craft stuff (which i dont even know does it require cash shop money?) your going to be sitting there with gimp weapons, and sadly no reason to use them.

I just seems like a game where you go resource, craft, do some simon says button mashing for that skill thing, which was interesting once, but then became kinda lame...and then you log out where it seems most of the fund stuff happens while your offline.

Yeah pvp, people tout pvp as the the main focus, but with combat being incredibly slow and clunky, and and tab target...i wasnt really willing to wait to try it out...saw a bunch of videos on the clan wars and it seemed right out of the early 2000's in design.

I mean dont get me wrong, this looks to be a fantastic game for people who like crafting and side stuff and dislike combat in general, just wasnt for me.

And please stop calling the game a sandbox already, your just setting people (like me) up for huge dissapointment, which does the game a disservice.

I normally log in during Script stealing event and do that.

then Team practice w/ my guild, ya its kinda lame but i wanna level my skills quickly

then i do my spying for the day

then a mini instance or instance

then dueling for a while

it's a bit different each day, since there's a lot to do in the game. If you don't get rid of you "quests lead me through til endgame" mindset, this game will be boring for you.

I have guides and videos on youtube.com/wenersz

mainly age of wushu so check it out

Look, another guy who's played for a few hours and feel qualified to talk about what AoW is and isn't.

It's silly really. You haven't even scratched surface here and yet you're talking like you've done all there is to do and seen all there is to see.

This is not your typical MMO where you log in and know what's it all about in 15 minutes (or ten hours for that matter). AoW opens up after the starter tutorial - which is boring and lame btw, no doubt about it - and offers a lot of freedom and non-linear progression, but you obviously never made it that far.

You don't even know how money works ffs and yet you feel competent enough to judge this game's "sandboxiness"...

You don't understand the game.  TSW is inherently PvE based and linear because of it, AoW is PvP based with PvE mixed in and non-linear due to the multiple ways of progressing in the game.  I'm not particularly familiar with Arche Age, so I won't comment on it.

People being dissapointed in this, for that reason, are a direct result of people attempting to sell the game by any means, even if it means being less than truthfull about the game, which imo does the game a dissservice.

What damages the game is the lack of information and inherent difficulty in figuring things out for yourself.  You, being a prime example of what happens.

Ten hours is enough to scratch maybe 5% of the game.  On the outside.  If all you were doing was autopathing around doing quests you didn't spend any time looking through the tutorial or exploring.  The tutorial should take 2-3 hours, unless you go at an epically slow pace.

Mobs are *NOT* the focus of the game, which is why their difficulty is tuned so far down.  You are a martial arts master and the mob is some starving theif.  Naked or not, you are whooping that mob's butt.

If you aren't into the time it takes to crafting things, you missed about 20% of the sandbox right there.  Equipment actually is extremely important and had you run a forbidden instance - you'd know that.  Fortunately, they cap out of the bones you can get on equipment so you don't have super noobs running around smoking all of the harder content.

I just seems like a game where you go resource, craft, do some simon says button mashing for that skill thing, which was interesting once, but then became kinda lame...and then you log out where it seems most of the fund stuff happens while your offline.

If you are button mashing combat, you aren't doing it right.  I'm not sure what else to tell you there...

Yeah pvp, people tout pvp as the the main focus, but with combat being incredibly slow and clunky, and and tab target...i wasnt really willing to wait to try it out...saw a bunch of videos on the clan wars and it seemed right out of the early 2000's in design.

Slow and clunky - at low levels.  You are a low level.  I'm not sure why you'd expect everything to be blazing awesome at low levels.  I know it's a bit painful, particularly pre-Goose....but this type of description is rampant among people that know every little about the game.

In regards to the clan wars, the most interesting part of it is the diplomacy and politics behind the scenes.  The war itself is fairly straightforward - the whole kidnapping maids thing is a bit new...but the general idea of what a guild war applies here as well.

I mean dont get me wrong, this looks to be a fantastic game for people who like crafting and side stuff and dislike combat in general, just wasnt for me.

You have that backwards.

And please stop calling the game a sandbox already, your just setting people (like me) up for huge dissapointment, which does the game a disservice.

I have a feeling you don't have the first clue what a sandbox is, and when you are actually delivered one - you complain about how you can't figure it out.  I've seen people like you before, and if you ever wonder why we never see innovation - hold up a mirror.

I downloaded the game last night but can't give it a try until after work. This thread has me a little worried. I'll keep an open mind tho. Usually things aren't as bad as people say.

You see there is your problem. NO ONE quest in Aow. You do you 1st chapter and NEVER quest again. the first chapter is more of a extended tutorial, quest giver to quest giver to ease you into the system. That should take you about 3 hours.

After that the world is yours.

then i do my spying for the day

then a mini instance or instance

then dueling for a while

it's a bit different each day, since there's a lot to do in the game. If you don't get rid of you "quests lead me through til endgame" mindset, this game will be boring for you.

I have guides and videos on youtube.com/wenersz

mainly age of wushu so check it out

Ha, I just watched your "Royal Guard versus Shaolin" video earlier this morning by chance, and then recognized you here. Love the vids :)

OT: Yeah, I have to agree that the reason some people are likely having a hard time getting into AoW is that they are so stuck in that themepark-ish mentality of linear, quest-driven progression that it's difficult for them to adapt to a new design (I've had that problem myself). I've played many themeparks over the years, and while I enjoyed quite a few of them, I'm always thrilled to see a game that strays the course and does things differently - In fact, that's a huge selling point for me. I can only do so many grocery lists of generic quests before the burn out hits me...

I've been researching pretty hardcore for the last couple of days (as I've been in a cave for awhile), and I still feel as though I have barely scratched the surface of what this game is all about. The attention to detail is staggering to me, and I'm pretty confident that once I get past the learning curve (however long that may take) it will be worth it in the end. It feels like an actual virtual world, and there's only a small handful of other games I could put in that category, most of them being 1st gen mmorpgs.

All that said, for any other would be, prospective players lurking this board, when/if you decide to try the game out, do what I did, and leave your conventional expectations at the door. Play the game for what it is and not what your years of mmorpg experience might expect it to be. I've had a way better gaming experience in general, by adopting that mindset. In the end, it might still not be what you're looking for (I can't even say for sure if it's 100% for me yet), but you will probably have a better time with the game if you go into it with an open mind.

It's pretty bad from what I played (though admittedly that wasn't much).  I remember seeing this cutscene ingame and thinking I was playing an N64 game.

The model graphics might not be all that great, but the combat animations make up for it, for me anyway.

Graphics have never been a big deal to me in general though.

Pro comment, I'm with you OP! I paid 19.99 for this a while back and couldn't last more than an hour. I love games like Darkfall, will play the new one and Arche Age and any other legit sand box but this games combat is slow and far too different for my taste. Was not enjoyable in the least I really wanted it to be as I really wanted a game in this Era. Oh well.

there is your reason right there. There is nothing wrong with the game, its just far too different for your taste. That is ok, not every game is made for everyone.

When it comes to mmorpgs i am used to play themeparks which is a lot different than this so i do feel strange playing AoW without anything holding my hand and its sandbox elements. But i am totally loving it. I dont play every day but when i do i get both overwhelmed and excited. I like it. Specially since i dont try to rush the game.

My endgame begins with character creation and ends with a new mmorpg
