There... are... four... lights!

4/06/13 10:43:47 AM#41

It always amuses me when someone says a video game is "pointless", be it GW2 or any other game. It usually comes from the people unable to play without that gear carrot, unable to just go out in the world and play for fun, they need their purple gear fix, their rewards... which are, actually, completely virtual items in a video game, and therefore totally "pointless".

Enjoy grinding your Tier 500 raid in a WoW clone... and losing that item you were waiting for for months to a guy with more DKP than you or who just had a lucky roll. Have fun in that nice community based on greed and abusing each other.

Playing now: WoW, Landmark, GW2

Got a refund: Archeage. First refund since I started MMOs.

Top 3 MMORPGs played: UO, AC1 and WoW

Honorable mentions: AO, LotRO and GW2.

Lol, well, the "point" of playing a video game is to have fun.  It's the definition of "fun" that becomes the problem.  Agree with you though!  :)

i think its funny as well.. especially in a themepark game.. overall there is no point to these games aside from having fun. Now of course maybe someones idea of fun IS the gear treadmill but thats on them but again it IS pointless. You spend all those thousands of hours to get top gear in a game like wow for what? what does it matter? what can you now do so much differn't with that epic loot?... whole point is these games are designed imho to be enjoyed "for the moment" type play. Which is fine by me but those expecting long lasting effects on the world or alliances that take over portions of the world and allow you to shape how the world works should look elsewhere... but i do find it amusing when people say gw2 is "pointless" but other games like Rift or Tera have a "point"

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. To be honest GW2 with all that gambling and cash shop resembles more an f2p game which you also have to pay for the box before it become really "free", and then it's unending grind or Gems Shop.

GW1 is a good b2p game example as sombody else stated, and TWS as well i might add.

I'd prefer for gw2 an option to go p2p which would take away all that gambling, and get a decent number of bank/bag slots, plus a decent system to store permantely your wardrobe items, instead of skinning items and store them in your bag/bank

I would gladly pay also to push them making a better game engine, the actual one is good looking but it is terribly optimized and a hw resource drain.

That doesn't make much sense, sorry. All the "cash shop gambling" is 100% optional and doesn't affect your ability to play the game. Don't like gambling? Don't do it. I never bought a single cash shop item that involves gambling.

And about the bank and inventory space... GW2 is a commercial product, not a charity. And unlike most if not all other B2P and F2P games, you can easily get those upgrades by using in game gold (and converting it to gems SMARTLY, at the right time). You don't want everything for free, do you? You already get one content update, for free, every month. ANet needs to get that money somewhere, to pay their developers.

And by the way, you suggest the game goes P2P... well, it's simple, just buy $10 worth of gems each month in the shop. There you go, you have your monthly subscription, and suddenly, the cash shop isn't a problem at all anymore. That's what I'm doing, not because I have to, like in sub based games, but because I enjoy the game and therefore the developers deserve my money. And $10 (the minimum gem purchase) is still cheaper than most of not all P2P MMO's monthly fee.

That post really doesn't make much sense. Want to see a really greedy pay to win cash shop? Go play SW:TOR, where you have to buy UI ELEMENTS (yes, you buy QUICKSLOT BARS!). Play LOTRO, where you need to use the cash shop if you want to optimize your character fully (best legendary stats, etc...). But please, don't be ridiculous pointing fingers at the GW2 cash shop, which is in no way mandatory to play.

i saw you listed FFXI as your favorite game of all time in that other thread.. i'm curious what was the overall "point" in that game to you that made it such a better experience overall compared to any other recent MMO. After hundreds upon hundreds of hours i'm sure you put into that game what overall "point" did it have that current MMOs don't offer you.

TSW was pretty awful, and I had my bank and bag slots maxed out in a few days.  Stop crying about GW2's cash shop, it's not going anywhere because it's actually fair to people's wallets.  Learn to make gold.

Yeah, it's always some small print too, like "Well it has a point... but that point starts at level (insert # here)."

Honestly, GW2 is pretty much the ONLY MMO I've ever played where I was having fun at level 1.

well for me if I don't find a game at least "fun" in some sense at level 1 It probably isn't a game for me honestly.. i will say GW2 has had the most to offer imho from a level 1 perspective in this type of game though

Yeah.  Well, I try to give every game a chance.  Your way makes much more sense, but if I went by that rule, I wouldn't play much of anything relating to MMO's since most of them honestly don't seem to want to entertain you until you're level 10+, or in TERA's case, level 20+.  I just don't see the point.  The good thing, however, is that it really doesn't take that long in today's MMO to get there.  It just doesn't make me want to see the rest of the game very badly either, unfortunately.

I don't have to play anything but GW2 to appreciate GW2.  The game suits me very well.   I prefer combat that is higher paced and I prefer cosmetic rewards.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

GW1 was probably one of the worst buys I have ever made. Bought the collectors edition, and going from classic MMO's like DAoC and WoW, it was a true dissappointment you had to click to move etc. It was so bad I cannot describe how shitty it was.

GW2 felt great. But I got burned out when I did hit 80, and I never looked back. WvWvW seemed fun but was buggy and you had to run all the time when you died. No fun in that.

TSW was also bad. Bad animations.

I enjoy playing Defiance atm. Will it last? Don't know time will tell. I try not to play the same game too much these days.

The Critical Hit Pretzel!

4/06/13 7:47:57 PM#55

GW1, though yeah... bit silly to compare that way. Of the B2P models, GW2 (I feel) has the most Pay 2 Win model out there, just for the fact power is so limited so having that money (which can directly be bought in game) is quite a big advantage.  Its bareable mind you, but its definently one thats on the iffy side for me and with the way its set up with WvW kind of benefiting from buying seige tools, it does feel that way. Yes you can earn it in game, but to me being able to BUY ease is always P2W to a degree, even in games I enjoy like Aion or Tera with just even exp boosts, GW2 just pushes it that much more.

I just can't appreciate its 'model' when it directly offers IN GAME GOLD which has more purpose then ever from other MMos to determining the ability of your character or who will win WvW. Not the worst model but its definently not one I'd inspire others to want to follow.

As for GW2 having more... eh... not really... but hey if you enjoy what it DOES have, theres no real reason to argue against it. Diablo 2 literally had very little to go about doing (repeating acts a dozen times) but I had a place with less content to do and had a blast with it compared to other games I could of played.

i agree on GW1.. sorta liked it when it first launched but lost interest fast.. tried to get back into it for the hall of monuments and couldn't suffer my way through any of it.. just don't care for that one at all

No, you could click to move, or use wasd or hold the mouse button.

Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, King of Tokyo

well, I don't play GW2 anymore as found it very boring after like 400 h of playing.

here people would argue that console game last as long, cost as much. May be, can't tell as never played console games.

GW1 got me for like 10h per day for like 2 years, may be more. I would play even more only some bad updates killed population there, I lost my game mates and quite playing.

TBH I don't even see b2p games, except GW1 and GW2 + secret world (so far I have not bought SW so have no idea), so I can't even guess which game I need to compare with GW2, OP?

so far my conclusion is, sorry to tell: for 60$ I would better appreciate 4 months of WoW or like 2 years (if not more) of some fun f2p.

GW2 to me is great graphic and very pretty game, but that all....

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

You probably made the same mistake as a lot of people did, assuming that GW1 was an MMO. It wasn't, it never claimed to be, and it still doesn't.

GW1 was more like a multiplayer co-op KotOR. It had decent tech for it's time, and was expanded upon for close to a decade. If you bought the game thinking it was an MMO, you may want to be more careful about what you buy in the future. Do some research before buying.

And for every one of those people there is another thinking that anyone that believes sitting in a town continually saying LFG for an hour is a socially handicapped 56kbps modem gamer that apprently would rather be standing around doing nothing instead of actually logging in and playing the game right away.

Wrong track ....we use to have things called guilds (where you use to do things with your friends ) being socially handicapped is where you are so selfish that logging in and playing the game right away is the only thing you understand . To be honest I'd at least give someone that tried for a group in a town the benefit of the doubt , LFG just strikes me as a tool used by someone so selfish they can't even take the time to make  friends
