It gives you 6 months free sub, 6% off monthly sub.

USD 450 gives you 1 USD /year sub.

You might want to double check at the kickstarter page. $250 WARRIOR FOREVER gives you the lifetime sub.

I don't think the Lifetime sub is a bad thing in the case of this Kickstarter.

For me, the possibility of a lifetime sub on a higher Tier plus some other goodies shot my pledge up $500.00.  I suspect this will be the case for others as well.

I suspect if CU is funded that a lifetime sub may not be offered when the game goes live, and that the percentage of players that have the lifetime sub will be relatively small.

If I get three years out of CU I'll be happy.  I suspect if CU is a success we'll see the game either expanded or a bigger, more feature robust sequel planned.

Searching on the word "forever" on Kickstarter, as of the time of this post, there were:

594 Warrior Forever ($250)

135 Hero Forever ($350)

9 Physical Phat Loot Forever ($450)

99 Whole Shmear (Hero Forever $500)

So, currently there are going to be 837 people with the lifetime subs, or about 15% of the current kickstarter pledges.

The minimum to get a digital copy, and a free month is $25.  The minimum for the lifetime is $250.  They haven't released anything about monthly subs, but they did sound like they would have tiers, and such, so I am thinking $8 or $10 a month maybe?  It sounded like they didn't want to do $15 if I remember correctly.

At $10/mo it would take 23.5 months, including the free month (and minus $25 donation min to get game) to equal the Forever pledge, so basically if you played for 2 years only, you would come out about the same, if you play longer it is all money savings after that.  The presumed lower monthly fee brings the value of the lifetime down a little.

At $8/mo it would take until the 30th month to start seeing the positive side of the forever subscription.

I didn't factor in all the aditional bonuses, character slots, founder apps, etc...So if that stuff actually ends up meaning a lot, it would significantly make you get into the 'positive' much faster.  You also get quicker access into the game at the higher tiers.

The games that have gone free to play, from what I have seen, they still offer the lifetime member points/cash in the cash shop, so while I am not in that situation for any game, I imagine they are still making out on most of these games....As f2p means they try to make you want to buy stuff in the cash shop, or need to, depending on the model.

So I would say it all comes down to how much faith you have in the project, if you think it will fail completely, then it is a bad idea, if you think it will launch and become f2p in 6 months (which I would have to say I doubt, they seem to want to build like Eve, even if it starts out slow) it would depend on the consideration you get in the cash shop....If they do build it like Eve, then you are going to make out in the end and be very happy you did it.

If I wasn't hesitant about the no pve (and I know why they are doing it, and I agree it makes the project more doable on their budget), I would consider it.

A lot of the over 1000 tiers get lifetime subs as well.

So, lets multiply the people that have done the forever pledges by 2.5, probably roughly where it will go when done.  That is roughly 2100 people with forever memberships (I didnt look to see if the max number of people could reach this, but probably so).  If the game can get 50,000 people, that would be 4.2%, and at 100,000 it would be 2.1%.

I think the 50k number is more reasonable to look at to begin with, using the same formula, it will have 16.5k backers (that is a less certain number as number of people will probably go down, and donation amounts up I imagine).  So they will lose about 4% of their sub revenue, while not huge is a decent hit, but I am sure calculated to help them get funded and made.

If they do a good job, the game will grow, using the Eve type model, and this will continue to become smaller, one comparison that may not work is that a lot of people playing Eve use multiple accounts, I do not know if they will have a need for such in Camelot, so it may grow at a smaller pace, or do good to stay at around 50k.  If it only has 20-25k people playing, they will be taking a 8-10% hit, while still probably operational, improvements would probably slow down a lot at that rate.

Now from their standpoint, this could be viewed as a loan, that is the price for getting $2+ million dollars to help make the game.

For me, it usually ends up being more risk than it is worth for me, while some people, even in games that have gone f2p, they have loved it and said they have gotten every cent out of it, plus more.

You are assuming that everyone with a life time sub will take full advandage of that life time sub. I would venture to say that 1/2 ot the people will be on to a new game by the time they can recoop the money they spent on the game not to mention expansions will still cost for most. If it takes 1-2 years to get your moneys worth from 2.5 years from now you don't think in 4.5 years there will be another game out there. Someone will probably start copying MJ's ideas the second they realize that people like this type of game and it is making money.

No, this is not correct.

It is effectively a lifetime sub, the reason for the 3-year thing is down to the KS system.

They are not promising to run for a minimum of three years, no-one has said anything of the sort.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

That would be a pretty stupid move.

Why drastically limit the money you can receive from the segment of your audience that is most likely to continually give money?

Can you grasp the concept of funding? Of getting cash in hand and not having to pay any interest on it...or giving any back? Of not even "giving up" anything for six years?

Lifetimers will still be paying for expansions so they will have that income from us.

Is it a bad idea for CU? I dunno. Is it a good idea for us if we tend to be loyal MMOers? yes.

$60 for a new MMO plus $180 for a year of monthly subs is $240. Suddenly the $250 lifetime looked a littler better to me.

Keep in mind it is only funders that gives A LOT of cash in investment. The retail players will not get a cheap sub.

It is limited.

On the other hand.

Would they get funded if they didnt do this?

Probably, but why not spoil supporters?

Exactly what I was going to say.  I doubt it would be an option during pre release or launch.  It's more of a dedication reward for those who helped get it started.

Good lord you people are wearing rose colored glasses on this game.. sure if asked I will say DAoC was the best PVP of all time, but until I recently went back to SWGEmu I was saying SWG was the best sandbox of all time.
