I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I had been playing this game as a nightly dessert to my SWTOR gaming sessions.  Suddenly,  one particular day about two weeks ago, something hit me.  I'm not sure what it was exactly, but I think something had changed in the angle I was viewing this game.  Rather hard to describe exactly, but something just clicked.  I think the problem with a lot of our perceptions comes from the way that the industry and media like to pigeon-hole these games into a certain genre/category/type (FPS, MMO, etc. etc.) We've become so entrenched in what those type of games mean to us and the way in which we play them that we have become conditioned to what we find enjoyment out of.

Anyways, whatever this change in my view is, I've come to accept it.   In this last week I've had some of the best MMORPG playtimes that I have had in quite some time.  Found incredibly nice, mature individuals to play with.  Reminded me of back in the old days.  Funny, what I had been looking for was sitting right there all this time.  I just needed a little time to form my own opinion.

In short, I am having an absolutely great time playing this little gem of a game.

Got my Elementalist up to level 80.  Bought an additional character slot and created a Ranger (which I find incredibly entertaining for some reason; odd because I don't tend to play ranged classes).  Been popping on my 80 Warrior a bit, plan on getting my Mesmer to higher levels.  So much to do but so much fun in doing it.

SWTOR's expansion is coming out in a week or so (which I preordered), but something tells me I'll be busy with GW2.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I had a very similar experience with GW2.

I posted my thoughts here.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/view/forums/thread/379861/Worth-a-2nd-look.html

Although since this post, I've changed from Guardian to Mesmer. I love this class.

To me, it's on par with the overall enjoyment level I had when I played a Bureaucrat in Anarchy Online. (Actually, there are a few similarites in their class concepts)

mesmer is a great class.. currently working on a new build been doing shatter build for to long.. might go for a phantasm build or maybe matra focused haven't really dabbled in those much.. although i do need to level my thief heh

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Currently a full zerker Shatter built, but I really want to explore other options. As it is now, if I even fart, I generate a clone so I got plenty of UP IN YER FACE boom-fodder. But I'd really like to try a phantasm build.  My interest piqued when I was doing the Svanir Dome event and had my Sword/Pistol combo up and for the most part all I did was maintain 3 pistol Phantasms at as much range as I could from the Champ. I'd let them do their thing while I ran around rezing everyone. When one would drop, I'd spawn a new one. But in that fight I rarely used my F keys.
But that was as a young'n. I've since been almost exclusively GS. Occasionally, I'll use Sword/Focus for the RS buff.

I want to try something different. But. Wow, what survivability for a berserker geared clothie.

Recently started playing SWTOR. I am posting updates to my experience in this thread:

What made me come back to GW2 after hitting level 80 and quiting was realising that this is less of a theme park mmorpg, here you really need to choos your own goals, and if you look at it like that ther is so much to do.....

Complete the huge maps!!

Costimize your gear!

WvW

Save up for legenderys

Complete all of the doungones!

And much more.... Anyways the point its that ther is life after level 80.

Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

Completing the whole map doesn't take all that long. A month or two tops. Customize your gear...as a goal? *sighs* WvW is pvp, not everyone likes pvp. Legendaries just a stupid grind for money/items, nothing legendary about that. Completing all dungeons again, can be done very very shortly there's only like 6 dungeons. And no, there isn't much more to GW2 than that.

There isn't much life after level 80, that is why so many people stopped playing once they hit 80.

I've got a few mesmer builds up my sleave I've been  playing with. Shatter / Phantasm builds are generally the best all-rounders (very high damage, and enough survivability to hold your own in a fight).

However, to mix things up.. mesmer's actually have quite a few options to look into. One is Manta-support. Mesmer's actually get some pretty insane healing / utility if they go heavy into mantras. Another build is to focus on Glamours with AoE blind / confusion utility. One of my personal favorites, is a build that focuses around clone generation & Chaos traits. The basic premise is to keep clones coming out, you can shatter them if you need to, but if they die, they cripple / bleed / confuse opponents into the ground. The whole build is a nice combination of survivability, condition damage, and confusion, so your opponents end up killing themselves most of the time. There's another variation of hte build that focuses more on direct damage, heavy blocks, and retaliation uptime. Very trolly, but hilarious in PvP.

Definitely true.

It's funny, because myself and a few others have been trying to point out this aspect of GW2 to others for some time now. However most posters just acted like we were making crap up. I guess some realizations you just can't tell people about, they have to come to their own understandings =/.

I'm not sure what it is... that they really hate the game in question or that there is so much hype surrounding it when it launches that they don't want to be seen as followers, because that's happened to people I know before.  Hell, it's happened to me!  There's always a chance that a game just disappointed you, but like myself with TERA or SWTOR, I just forgot whatever arguments I saw or took part in on these silly forums and just played the game.  There really is NO point in disliking a game because of other people's opinions, but sadly it happens a whole lot these days.

Like others have remarked recently, if I only played games people on these forums liked (I'll add at release), I would be really bored. lol

Besides, when it comes down to it, they're all just video games, and honestly, unless you get some kind of gold stars that earn you a cash prize at the end of the month each time you try to prevent someone from playing a game you don't particularly care for, what's the point?  That last comment excludes EA employees, because you probably do that for real.

Customizing your gear is very fun in GW2,as you can dye your armor... (gatharing the whole set of colors is also chalanging)

Well not every one like doungones... whats that to the point? still something to do,you have WvW and Team based pvp....

Some poeple like to grind... as do i its fun saving up money slowly and in the end getting an epic wepon.(Isent that what 70% of mmorps about?....)

Maybe ther are only 6 doungone... but done forget they alwayse have an even doungone+every doungone can be done in aobut 3-4 difrent ways, some of them are so hard that only hard core raiders can do them.

and ther is much more... Lets not forget fractals of the mist, world events,Game monthly events (that are epic) and you know what? just socialising around and helping noobs is really fun in GW2.... i bet ther is much more to do,im just in a hurry, late to the army,so i wont be able to discuss this further... :\ cya

I struggled to get my first toon to 80 and quit with a number of level 30's.  I came back and went to the later zones with no heart quests and a bit more solo difficulty and the game started to click with me.  I've been back playing this game as my primary game for 4-5 months.  I completely understand those that don't like it on the first run through but when I saw the different built opportunities and different ways to attain gear/runes/sigils/crafting I was hooked.

I'm not in love with the universal loot table (other than crafting mats) but I can tolerate it.  They should make some gear/recipes unique drops to different types of mobs.

Due to the number of different leveling paths being an altaholic is actually possible in this game unlike 90% of the latest MMO releases.  I hope to find another 6 plus months of entertainment with this game until something with even more PvE freedom is available.

I honestly feel its less you finding something with GW2 and more so feeling your time on SWTOR is 'useless' so to speak so you haven't wanted to play it and so you went towards GW2 as an outlet instead.

Its nothing new, it happens with any game out there. For you GW2 was there to invest more time into. I had this happen with Path of Exile having taken me away from Rift quite a lot to the point I didn't even feel like logging on Rift which I had been playing for a long time, despite thinking I'd play it a bit till the expansion. I ended up going with PoE for its Beta that would be wiped over waiting for the expansion on rift and it filling a gap rift couldn't fill knowing it would be trivialized in a few months (was at PA cap by then)

Hehe why do you think so many of us keep playing and enjoying GW2... because it DID break off from the WoW clone model. After 8 years of WoW clones, many of us just had enough of it... and GW2 is the welcome breath of fresh air in the genre.

There is more, much more to do, but GW2 took the first step. It broke the damned mold.

When I log into GW2, no matter what I do, PvE or PvP, I know I don't have to worry about being forced into some activity before I can enjoy another one. I know I can jump into World vs World and be competitive without having to farm for gear for weeks if not months before like in WoW. When one logs into GW2, he's in for fun not limited by gear or other artificial limitations.

Playing now: WoW, Landmark, GW2

Top 3 MMORPGs played: UO, AC1 and WoW

Honorable mentions: AO, LotRO and GW2.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I had a very similar experience with GW2.

I posted my thoughts here.

Although since this post, I've changed from Guardian to Mesmer. I love this class.

To me, it's on par with the overall enjoyment level I had when I played a Bureaucrat in Anarchy Online. (Actually, there are a few similarites in their class concepts)

I did read your post a few days earlier.  It definitely contributed to my opening up to this game.

Release a game with a very large established fanbase from 10+ years of bnet history when the market was still emerging and the casual base had not yet been established, thus ripe for harvesting a momentious self perpetuating playerbase people never leave because they have X hours invested in their characters, and their friends and everyone else plays anyway. Not discounting Blizzard quality... but WoW's success is as much about perfect timing as it is quality, if not more so. - Derros

Yeah, the post can seem a bit over the top but I was having one of those moments where I had some really fun days of playing.

Oh, and by the way, you might see me in PVP but you won't see my name :P

Now, is anyone interested in doing some guesting?  I have multiple alts I am leveling up and the most of the guilds I have joined in are mainly 80+ level players.

If so, either reply with your name or send me a PM (I'm at work and I don't know what my account name is off-hand).

I ended up going with PoE for its Beta that would be wiped over waiting for the expansion on rift and it filling a gap rift couldn't fill knowing it would be trivialized in a few months (was at PA cap by then)

do you consider yourself an expert on what other people feel or enjoy?

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

To this day I am still baffled how ANet flubbed up PvP so horrifically in GW2. The mechanics are there, the gameplay, lot's of potential, I noticeably miss dodge in other games that do not offer the feature, but the way in which they chose to package PvP is awful, and ultimately, unplayable longterm. It's a quick fix game imo.

Build diversity doesn't mean much to me if all I am doing is repetitive gameplay for a bunch of nothing. Sure, events and dungeons are cool for a few go-arounds, but then what? Do it again and again... why? It wasn't THAT fun. All my opinion, of course.

I'm getting old now, and life has caught up to me, so if a game doesn't hook me, I won't force it.

If they ever get around to adding a competitive rating system, and actual guild wars with rivalries, where winning and losing matter, not this everyone get's a gold star BS because we are all special snowflakes, I would come back and play.
