PAX East 2013 was a significant event for Gazillion Entertainment's Marvel Heroes. Read on for all the highlights! There was quite a bit of news from the show floor, so be sure to dig for a full recap.

As it would turn out, Gazillion had major plans for the show, and this was something we had speculated on previously due to the aforementioned booth location and size. Marvel Heroes hasn’t enjoyed a massive marketing campaign up until this point and given what we learned at the show, we can understand why Gazillion pulled out all the stops at PAX East.

Read more of Michael Bitton's Marvel Heroes: Gazillion's Super-heroic Plans.

This Ultimate Powers is a huge money sink.  It sounds just like the system in Cartoon Networks "Fusionfall".

In that game you start with a handful of heroes.  As you grind out the limited content you earn ingame cash.  You use the cash to buy "eggs". Which when opened will give you a random hero.  There are 3 price range tiers with each tier giving you the chance of a rarer hero.

You go up levels as you play but the only want to advance the stats of your heroes is to get copies.  Maybe after like getting the same hero 20 times you max him out.  The difference between this and Marvel Heroes is you don't spend real money to buy eggs (as far as I know).

You can see how crazy this is.  They get you both ways.  If you just want a certain hero you have to play the random drop game.  If you want to max out your character you have to keep buying chances a lot.  It would be bad enough if you could just buy the Hulk 10 times to max him out, but to make it random?

Yup, the random concept they might go with will kill this title. At least for me. If I wanted to gamble I would buy lottery tickets.

There are actually some ideas being tossed around the beta forums which I will not go into.

They were so close to greatness, but whoever is coming up with their business model is just retarded.  No other way to say it.  I don't care about random drops, but random buys are not good when you want a specific hero to play with.

You dont have to spend real money.

That's true, you don't, you just have to grind and grind and grind.  Just how long do you think it would take to max out, no just to get the hero you want from rare random drops?

Maybe you will be able to buy/trade heroes on the AH, but I don't believe they will sell cheap.

A ftp has to have a way to earn money, but to be greedy about it seems shortsighted.

I am a founders pack owner the 59.99 one. If they would have announced the bull shit random token thing earler, I woundnt have bought the pack. Im really hoping they take a few steps back, rethink there approach. I dont mind spending cash for more heros, but not going to buy a random chance at getting what I want.

Big fan of the game but, yep, this is probably the one thing they could have done to make sure I never spend anymore money on it. I'm glad I grabbed a single hero starter pack to make sure I get the only hero (for now) that I really wanted, because if this system stays, they'll never see another penny out of me.

This is a little worse than I thought.  Once you buy/loot a token your chances of getting that same hero increases.

Did I misuderstand?  It can't be right, that I could pay for a token, get a hero I didn't want, buy another token which will have an increased chance of getting that hero again?

This is the part that concerns me:

"If you don’t own a particular hero, looting or acquiring that hero’s token through the shop will add it to your roster. Once this happens, your odds of receiving a hero token for that character again are increased"

If this is true, it means the more heros you have, the less likey it is to find NEW hero tokens.  Imagine you find a Jean Grey token, you add it to your collection, you try her out and dont like her play style so decide not to play her any more.  Because you own her, when a new token drops, it is more likely to be for a hero you own like Jean Grey.  This reduces your chance at new heros like Gambit who are due to come out soon after launch.

This "random" / more chance for token at heros you already own crap is a game killer.  Just wait until you played the game for 30 days and find yourself with 5 Scarlet Witch tokens and wishing you could play Deadpool or someone else but dont want to spend money on a small CHANCE of getting a hero you might like.

Every publisher should have an average joe/jane gamer on staff with veto power over their various departments.  That way ideas as ridiculous as these get fed straight into the paper shredder before the outside world can see it.  Think of all the doomed-from-the-start Freemium matrices we could have skipped, the embarassingly awful design decisions that had to get rolled back, the ugly and unpopular game revamps that could have been avoided!

The heart of this game is playing your preferred Marvel character(s) in the Marvel universe with friends.  Anything that gets in the way of that experience cheapens the game and lowers its chance of success.  So, back to the drawing board, Gazillion, to come up with something not so dunderheaded this time.

I was real excited about this game and bought a founders pack. Then they changed the business plan to the stupidest pay to win scheme you could dream up. Shame on Gazillion and Marvel.

I love the random drops..but random coins?..that blows. You should be able to buy the character you want if you're paying real money. Even if its an adjusted cost based on popularity. The higher cost may even limit the possibility that a million wolverines will be running around..or some simililarly popular character. (but I doubt it).  I don't even have a problem with random coins for skins/costumes for your character...but not the character itself.

The exception would be those versions that have different stats...like savage hulk vs mr fixit or hulkbuster iron man suit vs standard iron man suit...spider-man vs captain universe spider man.lol...well the last one is very old-school but you get my meaning. Those different versions should be purchasable separately or in-game drops only...and I'd even go as far as to say they should be available as one or the other but not through both means.

I'm actually warming up to the idea of the game now that I know Daredevil is one of the free ones....now to decide which starter pack to buy....Wolverine...Colossuss....Cyclops or The Human Torch?

by the by...is this on PC only or are they attempting a multi-platform release?

I think what happened, was they gave out too much free credits to purchasers of foundry packs, and realized people are just going to live off of them and not buy any more. That is based solely off of my speculation.

I agree a bit with Birdie above.  I think the finance guys have looked at the founder pack sales and the amount of heroes purchased by beta testers using free money given to them and they realised most people are going to buy one hero of each type (melee, ranged, hybrid) and then buy an outfit or two and then stop buying.  They realized their model would not work unless they charged $50 per hero and that was not gonna fly so they decided to make hero tokens random and remove the choice of buying the one you wanted and limiting your purchases to just those heroes.

I am also speculating all of this.  I dont see the random tokens going away but I predict an announcement soon where you can either

A.) Buy a token for a specific hero before launch, this would drive up founder pack sales

B.) Allow specific heroes to be purchased in the store once the game launches for an inflated cost or allow you to take a chance with a random token for much less.

Not to defend this nutty idea of Gazillion's, but isn't this the opposite of pay to win?  Even if they come out with a more powerful character a person just can't go out an buy it.  And if he all ready spent money on a lot of other heroes, his chances for getting the new one are even less.

Sounds good to me. Being able to buy specific heroes was definitely P2W. Randomizing it will put to use less known characters, and add much needed longevity to this game (for those not spending real money). I literally see no downside to this idea.
