That sounds like a good balanced approach to stealth in RVR.

All sounds awesome to me.  I'm not a particularly big fan of stealth classes, but a scouting class with stealth abilities that isn't damage oriented sounds ideal.  I would love to play a class like that to scout weak enemy positions or pockets that are ripe for pillaging.

I may love steath classes (well a bunch of other classes too!), but I liked the perma-stealth like DAoC.  You could also go counter-stealth and hunt down stealthers.  I do agree with the fact that the cooldown before reuse should be much longer, like a minute.  Nothing is more frustating than zapping a stealther only for them to dissappear in front of you and there is nothing you can do.

He doesn't say the scout class WON'T be ranged.  He says that it will have strong scouting capabilities, but not strong, long-ranged damage capabilities.  It could be an archer class with average range (think 1500 range in DAoC instead of 1875 bolt range) and average damage which also has some average melee capabilities.  Add strong scouting abilities and this sort of class matches the definition given in the original post.  I wouldnt expect a scouting class to not have ranged capabilities.  I, personally, would love a class such as this.

Yeah, good catch. I had to go back and re-read his quote. I'm hoping the scout has some kind of movement speed enchancment or temporary bonus to help get away while out searching for the enemy.

What i assume so far is that archers will be able to do good damage (i.e. the crit shot ability in DAoC)  if not stealthed, but wont be allowed to use that same skill if he's stealthed, at least thats what i hope for.

My HOPE is that Archers will be the Scout class and will be unable to perform just about anything while in stealth.  They may have to unstealth completely before attacking... perhaps even for several seconds.

I would much rather see an Archer with superb DPS and no stealth than an Archer with sucktastic DPS and stealth (think Shadowbane.) 

Either way, I will be playing the Scout class AND the Archer class... if that needs to be two separate toons, so be it!

You are assuming the archer and scout classes are one in the same.  There can easily be more than one class per realm that uses bows as a main weapon.  The type of weapon used does not make the class, the abilities do.

Just as pure speculation, one realm could have a melee oriented scout, one realm could have a range oriented scout, and one could have a magic oriented (think of a more advanced Nightshade magic) scout.

He doesn't say the scout class WON'T be ranged.  He says that it will have strong scouting capabilities, but not strong, long-ranged damage capabilities.  It could be an archer class with average range (think 1500 range in DAoC instead of 1875 bolt range) and average damage which also has some average melee capabilities.  Add strong scouting abilities and this sort of class matches the definition given in the original post.  I wouldnt expect a scouting class to not have ranged capabilities.  I, personally, would love a class such as this.

I guess it's possible he meant that, but it would kind of suck if the archer class did mediocre damage with a bow. Maybe there could be a damage penalty to shots from stealth or a flat out requirement of being unstealthed to shoot a bow.

My HOPE is that Archers will be the Scout class and will be unable to perform just about anything while in stealth.  They may have to unstealth completely before attacking... perhaps even for several seconds.

I would much rather see an Archer with superb DPS and no stealth than an Archer with sucktastic DPS and stealth (think Shadowbane.) 

Either way, I will be playing the Scout class AND the Archer class... if that needs to be two separate toons, so be it!

Both could be possible, depending on how the skill spec lines will work, i thought of a way that stealth would be a spec of course, and bow another spec. the higher level you are in bow, the lower you are in stealth. So if lets say (just using those figures as example) oonce oyu reach i.e. lvl 50, if you chose 40 stealth than the max bow level you could have would be 10, or vice-versa.

you could end up having 25 in each, and have average stealth average bow skill

So much bashing stealth classes that were able to kill SOME classes and slink away back into the darkness.

what about some othe classes? Heretics with focus/snare that was death to anyone without insta range. 

This is just one example....but needless to sy I dealt with it and loved it.

sometimes you recognized a class and turned tail....

- Give Stealthers the ability to waylay stragglers without mega frontload damage. (Surprise attack is there, but insta death would not be. No stun openers are really necessary, maybe an ensnare that slows runspeed and keeps target in range if Stealther is  CC'd. )

- Have an *additional* non-assassin-type alternative scouting class that may be light on damage (primarily a utility class), but with some short duration CC, with stealth and escapability (slightly more mobility, dodges, distractions, tricks, misses, parries,cloaking, etc)

- Give Stealthers the ability to infiltrate keeps and attempt to dispatch defensive siege (difficult as most keeps will have NPC and player defenses).

- Give stealthers a greater stealth "check" when in lower lighting or near environmental objects like bushes, treelines, rocks, walls, etc. Slight-somewhat greater chance to be revealed in higher light and open field. If stealthers are given this type of feature, they should not have a slower stealth speed as they will be taking less direct routes toward their objectives and would have issues reaching fights in time.

I make these suggestions as a longtime stealth player from Ultima Online-present, having tried varying types of stealth classes, builds, etc.

I'd be more comfortable giving stealthers CC type abilities from a stealthed status.  That way if the CC is working with others they could be a very valuable member of the team.

For example, a hamstring ability that lets you sneak up on an enemy and root them or snare them for a decent period of time, allowing a group in hiding nearby to ambush the straggler. 

Anything that makes scouts/stealthers more valuable to a team/group without making them individual stealth death machines.

I'm looking forward to seeing what MJ is going to propose to kickbackers regarding stealth.  It's pretty clear he already has some mechanism in mind.

how about the more stealth in an area the further away they can be seen...no more double/triple perfs

Which is why the stealth community will try to keep up the pressure until we (hopefully not) are eliminated.

BTW, what is the BSC mechanic? I haven't come across that acronym before.

It might mean Buff Speed Class...there was that and SBC (speed buff class) being bandied about a few weeks ago. So, if that's the case, probably what it means is they're going to determine how speed works first, then go from there.

It irks some people especially those who like to solo around bridges in DAOC, but I'd say the high damage attack from stealth with poisons, debuffs, and stun is more aggravating. That won't be in CU according to Mark. So we move on to figuring out what stealthers can do instead.

For stealth, I would go with "medium armor" and up (maybe even a stealth tank).

Stealth as a general mechanic provides one thing that almost no other mechanic provides: initiative.  The stealthed player strikes first, be design.

It's seems obvious in 2013 that high burst damage plus auto-initiative is a bad combination.

 

So here's the question: why not just have a stealth tank?  Or maybe not even a tank, maybe just a "DAOC-Merc-like" sustained DPS ... with stealth as their utility.

 

Stealth classes have traditionally been given burst damage because developers avoid giving them sustained DPS.  This seems like an old broken paradigm from a "good gameplay" perspective.  It seems like stealth should provide some utility (stealth openers could blind, stun, root, snare, silence, disarm, but not deal 9001 damage).  GW2 actually seems to have a pretty good model for most of its stealth (aside from the burst damage part, which returns).  In GW2, stealth:

- Happens often (so you don't have to stack a huge amount of utility/damage into 1 stealth opener)

- Very short duration (so you can't stealth across a map)

- Can be penetrated (most melee attacks work as an un-targeted cleave, so you can still hit the player)

- Provides a lot of utility via the player's spec (heals, cleanses, movespeed, other things)

Warhammer's stealth openers seemed to be a very good model -- they were damage barbs, but offered no burst damage (for most of the game's life).  The burst damage of the stealth classes were a separate issue (they came from other abilities unrelated to stealth).

 

I particularly like the way GW2's stealth is repeatable.  This removes one of stealth's hardest balance issues: how binary it is.  In other games, a successful stealth is "autowin", and a failed stealth is "autolose".  GW2 avoids this by making stealth generally weaker, but more spammable.  I think this is a good approach, although stealthing across an entire frontier is rather fun.
