Some people, like myself, feel that rooting is an old tired method that needs to evovle or die off. Some people are afraid of change and would rather that the old 1980 arcade style of play remain popular and even go so far as to claim its a step forward and requires more "strategy".

Some will agree some will not.

But it's not an old method. It's very, very new to the MMO genre and it's a change I like. Frankly, in nearly MMO I've ever played I was able to tab-target, jump, swing, slash, and hotclick a dozen abilities at the same time. And I'm really glad the NWO doesn't do that. 

EQ didn't root attacks, WoW didn't root attacks, DDO didn't root attacks, Rift didn't root attacks. 

But this isn't a standard cursor menu hotbar spam tab-target MMO - it's an action MMO. 

Action games that root attacks: Diablo, Path of Exile, Devil May Cry, Dark Souls

Action MMOs that root attacks: RaiderZ, Tera

now... this is an action MMO, right? And it's based off of a tabletop game that doesn't allow for moving at the same time as attacking? 

But nonetheless, if you can name a SINGLE action game that doesn't root attacks, I'll be impressed. I can think of 2 series, and both are sidescrollers.

Way to dismiss anyone that doesn't agree with you.

I hate GW2's spastic movement based combat.  It was novel for the first 20-30 hours than it got old fast.  You hardly notice being rooted when playing melee toons in Neverwinter, it only really shows it self with ranged classes and I still don't feel it's that bad.  Maybe after a few dozen hours I'll change my mind but so far it's not bothering me to much.

Yeah, like in WoW casters can't move while casting since day one to present. In fact, one of the casting classes has a cooldown ability that allows them to cast while moving for a short time (shamans), so it's pretty clear that the rooting is used as a balancing factor.

 

But yeah, since WoW uses rooting while casting, that game really has no business in the genre. 

 

Oh wait.

 

You might want to try again with another argument.

Not all skills in WoW root you though.  There are talents and i think glyphs that allow you to cast while moving.  Also, in WoW, you're able to cancel and reposition yourself, or run away.

I will never understand people that love their freedom to be limited.  Rooting, killing your faction's guards...anything.  Find something else to fight for.  People just want to move and there are game out there that prove it can be done and balanced.

 

I don't want to play Ninja Gaiden again, it sucked in the 80's and it sucks now.  People say that Raiderz and Dragon Nest roots.  They do to some extent, but those game are clearly fast action based unlike TERA and Diablo. 

 

I suppose it's all subjective.  I felt like melee in Neverwinter was ok with rooting but ranged was not.  I will play melee characters in that case.  I'm just glad that not all games in the future will root me in place as GW2 and countless other games have proved that it is not required for "balancing".

You're making a mighty leap by saying a preferred style of combat is somehow "limiting" freedom.  That's kinda ridiculous honestly.

Some people don't like floaty cheesball combat mechanics where you don't have to think about things.  We like our games to have weight, to have an illusion of impact, and to make you think about your positioning and what your enemy is going to do in the next couple seconds before you start up that fireball of doom.

There is a reason games like Demon Soul are applauded for their combat mechanics, and why GW2 is not praised as high in most circles as Tera for it's combat mechanics.

Just because you are rooted now, doesn't mean it will be like that forever.. it is just beta. Also, there are many tricks that can be done to make rooting in place seem less problematic - WoW has rooting in place and it doesn't work too badly does it.

Atleast its not Like Aion where you couldn't (can't?) even turn while casting.
