Originally posted by cronius77 First of all: piracy isn't stealing. It's copyright infringement that (might) withhold earnings from the product creator. I say might because it's hard to figure out if a pirated game equals a lost sale. Like, I don't think you could argue that a copy pirated by a person that truly never intended to buy the game in the first place counts as a lost sale. But I digress... the only thing DRM does nowadays is to punish legitimate customers such as ourselves (yes, I pre-ordered Simcity, the Limited Edition even). Pirates are going to pirate the game, DRM or not, and they won't have to suffer through EA's DRM shenanigans. So why's it even there? A strong DRM can make the game a bit harder to crack, but it will be cracked. So all EA's doing is fucking over their customers because they don't want to face reality. I'm OK with DRM for the most part, though. Steam's DRM is pretty non-intrusive, although I've had problems getting offline mode to work. <childish, provocative and highly speculative banner about your favorite game goes here> |

"I hate EA, but I will continue to support the company by buying their products" Well people, I see much more DRM coming in the near future. |

I don't see what the big deal is. 99% of the games I own use Steam, which basically requires you to be online at all times anyway. Granted it does have an offline mode, but it's pretty much useless (you can't start it in offline mode unless you actually switched it to offline mode while online). Not to mention that MMORPGs by their very nature require you to be online while playing (duh). However I won't be buying the game because my backlog is large enough already, and also because Origin is absolutely awful and I don't want that crap on my PC. Plus I'm already boycotting EA for killing off pretty much every single good game company they've acquired. So I suppose the TC can take some solace in that fact. |

Lol Pretty much, this video illustrates your point. |

This is the first game that I've actually payed for [mod edit] since Skyrim, and I'm loving it. I'm pissed off that it's down right now meaning that I can't play it at all, but meh. The game itself is great fun and there's no reason to boycott it just because you don't care for the company behind it.

Originally posted by Loktofeit This is true, and I will fully admit that EA"s typicaly crap probably would not stop me from buying a game that I really, really wanted. However...I was on the fence with SImCity. I enjoyed old school SimCity, and this one actually looked pretty good, so I was more or less planning to buy it. But when I saw EA's crap, I passed. So I mean, it all depends on how interested the individual consumer is in the game. If you're really psyched, EA can probably get away with screwing you (or me). But if you're on the fence, you're likely to pass...and I think EA should really consider this. Yeah, you will still sell your game to a lot of people, but there are also a bunch of people who would have bought your game, but didn't because of your crap. Another thing to consider is that developing a game with heavy microtransactions in mind can actually hurt the game. For instance, the forced 2x2km map size in SimCity was a major factor in me not buying it. And I'm pretty sure they did this so that they can sell bigger maps later. Actively HURTING a game so that you can profit later really pisses me off. And I actually feel bad for the developers, who put their blood, sweat and tears into this game, to see key features of it gutted so that EA can sell them later. Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob? |

I was very disappointed with them last night. While I do agree with the OP, honestly, DRMs don't dissuade me from purchasing. I just don't really care. Granted, I really care when I can't logon, but that's really rare.
I think the DRM EA is using is a little draconic. It's kind of ridiculous that I can't do anything without constantly pinging their server. Truth is, I'll keep playing this game. It's that much fun |

It gave an error message about cloud saves desyncing, but didn't pose any problems for me. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

i'll join your boycott. Although drm is fine with me if it screws over the pirates, and I couldn't care less about simcity anyway, so I don't think it will help much. But I wont be buying dragon age 3 if that helps. I guess it doesn't count as a boycott if you don't buy something because it will probably suck, but oh well.

I disagree. Just don't buy/play the game. Supporting pirated copies is why we have this crap in the first place... |

And this is why we got drm. If the gaming conmmunity as a whole didnt buy the first drm games, publishers would have been forced to sell without drm to stay in bussiness but just as this thread shows 90% have the patience and foresight of a baby so instead we have to deal with this. Thanks again folks

Fun game. I personally didnt have any trouble connecting to the server. for me it was the origin friendlist and the sim city friend list that were having a cock fight lol. Great game though and honestly i wasnt surprised about the issues. For the most part its worked fine for me and i recomend the game. Its great :).

[mod edit] All they're doing is punishing the people who actually bought the game at this point, not like that's anything new from EA though I suppose.
Edit: Ah but yes, boycott EA. |

I used to love the Heroes of Might & Magic series. When the makers started using DRM, I boycott them too. Those companies are so self-centered, they don't realize that their games aren't great. I only play those on rainy days when I lose the net and can't access mmo's.

I'm sure people have legit complaints about SC5, so this isn't for them.
Hey guys. I see Sim City 5 was released. As soon as I saw it, I didn't even need to play. I went to Metacritic and spammed the site with a bunch of 1s. As soon as I saw it was by EA, I didn't even need to play Sim City 5, I automatically rated it as a 1. I keep making new accounts so people don't play any EA game! I do this for every game EA releases! I also went to Amazon and have been spamming about how bad EA is, I don't really talk about the game except for that online thing, whatever that is. All I know is I have to rate everything a 1 that is by EA! I would rate every EA game a 0 if I could! I downrate every review that is positive, and uprate every review that shows how bad EA is! Boy does EA suck! Current MMOs: Defiance, Guild Wars 2, TERA, SWTOR |
