I suppose you meant "cycles" ;)

I had the problem with nights being really too bright until a moved to a 32" HDTV to play and therefore calibrated the display using proper software and a calibration DVD.

But I agree, nights are still too bright, and there should be a separate gamma setting for nights so everybody can fine tune it as he prefers. I made that suggestion on the official forums a couple of weeks ago.

i have my gamma set pretty low already so when night comes around it is pretty dark overall so guess that's why it's so noticable to me

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Immersion is up to the player, not the game.

When you have your display properly calibrated for movies so that blacks are pitch black and whites are bright white while keeping all the nuances inbetween, it also looks much better and the difference between day and night becomes more noticeable too :)

I find myself looking at them instead of the game world most of the time since it tells me what and where to "explore" (or visit the places the game already explored for me).

Those "handholders" were placed in the game right at the end of the development for the simple reason of players feeling completely lost in the game... not many were used to that new event-system, field combos,dodging....exploring

But hey! it´s easy to solve that! just uncheck the "map completition" in the map (lower left corner-eye icon) and voilá!

prepare to enjoy GW2 ;)

No. Handicapping myself won't make me enjoy the game. That's not how it works. If I received a bonus of some kind (+xp?) or a special achievement I would do it.

It´s about as immersive as any Super Mario 3-D game.

High fantasy cartoony look and different playfields to run around and kill stuff. There is nothing "realistic" about this game to get immersed in.

GW2 is "cartoony"?  Seriously?  You're just hating on it because you lack any meaningful objectivity to back up your claims.

Oh, and let's not forget your "Best MMOs played" list in your signature, and you dare to call GW2 "cartoony" and unrealistic. lol.

Yeah, that kind of answer makes me wonder if the person even ever logged into the game.

I don´t care if you call the style "cartoony" or not, perhaps it´s "anime", I just don´t like to have things like these in my gaming experience. Same reason I don´t play TERA. As for my signature, you see I don´t like any high fantasy T rated MMOs. It´s a matter of taste.

This, this, this and another thousand times THIS.

I thought I was the only one realizing it. GW2 has what is probably the most breathtakingly beautiful and painstakingly detailed game world that has ever existed, and once you reach level 80 there is absolutely nothing to go out there for.

It isn't cartoony or anime.  What you dont like is apparantly non-human races.

I'll keep it brief.

My biggest and most immediate issue that I had with GW2 on release when I tried to play it was that I felt it lacked immersion.  Strangely, despite the polish and detail, I had rarely felt so un-immersed in a game.  I think it may have had something to do with world design, character models, UI... something that I can't quite place.

Anyways, I haven't played since launch.

I'm wondering if others have had a similar experience, and can help me understand why I feel so much less connected to this game than to its prequel, for example.

i completely agree.  leveling just felt like going through the motions.  i felt no connection to my character.  imo it's not world design,  character models or the ui.  those are done beautifully.  it's the class design and lack of holy trinity.

I think the prostitute mod corrupted your game files man. -elhefen

Don't mix single player games with MMOs. In single player games I play against myself. I see MMOs more competitively.

the point is though how in anyway does turning off map completion handicap you unless you are specifically going for the 100% map completion.. all it deos is give you a way to better enjoy the game if all the map markers are to distracting imho.. i like it this way because with the markers on i tend to fall into the i'm going here to get this waypoint type play with them off I just wander and enjoy the events and content in the zones

it reduces my exp/hour and makes 100% map completion slower. I'm not a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of player.

I think the biggest issue I had is that it was a game stating that the world always changes, but after staying in a zone too long you slowly see that nothing moves, enemies are static and just play animations in place. NPCs don't move often, some do but most just repeat a pattern. Finally, dynamic events repeat so often that the world feels too much like a game and less like a real virtual world. The combination creates a sense of dislocation since everything appears out of place.

So you complain about features which actually serve your "not stop and smell the roses" playstyle.

What I read on those forums never ceases to amaze me.

how is it a handycap unless you are going for map completion specifically?... also curious in all games that offer easy, normal, hard options. Do you always choose easy because the option is there?

Don't mix single player games with MMOs. In single player games I play against myself. I see MMOs more competitively.

the point is though how in anyway does turning off map completion handicap you unless you are specifically going for the 100% map completion.. all it deos is give you a way to better enjoy the game if all the map markers are to distracting imho.. i like it this way because with the markers on i tend to fall into the i'm going here to get this waypoint type play with them off I just wander and enjoy the events and content in the zones

it reduces my exp/hour and makes 100% map completion slower. I'm not a stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of player.

then why play rpgs? differn't strokes I suppose..

The reason GW2 is the least immersive MMO I have ever played is that there is way too much important information on the minimap and map.

Never heard of MinMaxers? There are different ways to play MMOs you know.

So you complain about features which actually serve your "not stop and smell the roses" playstyle.

What I read on those forums never ceases to amaze me.

No, handholding and making everything easy isn't serving my playstyle. I want to be challenged. Fully pre-explored maps are no challenge.

I personally feel there's next to no immersion in GW2. Nothing ever really sucked me in, and never once did I get excited travelling to new areas, or really about anything in the world. I played for the combat and a bit of crafting, and that's not enough to keep me into it.

Then turn off the markers, the option is there, 1 click away.

people who play for an immersive experience probably aren't the same who want to hit max level as fast as possible and get the best stuff asap.. we are talking immersion.. turning off the markers helps with immersion which is why it was brought up
