The company and mods behind TERA are ok with racism, sexism and other hate speech because they choose not to deal with it.

If a person supports that company with money, they are supporting the company's actions - so they support the continued racist and hate speech in chat.

I have no clue what server you guys were on but on Temprest Reach I have never had any problem besides Global I turned it off and never looked back...

I mean once in awhile we get a troll in lfg,area,trade but I mean doesn't every game?

Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know but I have never seen anyone talking about raping children or any of that such nonsense...

I just havent seen on my server what you guys are talking about so maybe I just picked a good server I don't know....

You don't need global and area to play the game with others. I've done fine getting questing parties with just /say and if I need a dungeon then I use the dungeon finder. Simple as that. One last thing, do people forget that we have free speech in US. If you don't like it then ignore it but if some neck bearded basement dweller wants to make stupid comments then he should be allowed to do so without having a company get involved. If you can't deal with your own problems then that is your problem not the companies.

I turn global off and /ignore those who spam Area and LFG.

Outside of those few loudmouths the community is actually really nice.  I've met some friendly people that pugged with me for overland group quests.

I guess there are some perverts with an agenda to be loud.  There also seems, by the reaction, some people with an axe to grind from the other side of the coin.

i have seen blatant racism in games before, in wow there was a guild called kool kids klub who would dress up in white gowns and chase dark skinned toons around org.

that guild got removed and i think some of the players temp banned.

but threatening to rape someones 5 year old daughter? there is no way that should go unpunished, that player should be permanently banned from the game.

whats next? linking child porn in chat? i feel sorry for anyone that thinks this is acceptable behavior in any mmo, even F2P.

This goes both ways, yea these people need to be punished for making comments about kids like that, sure they should, I support punishment for that type of stuff wholeheartedly, but if people get offended by something said on a video game by a random person they probably have some issues of their own as well.

It's just not a big priority for a company trying to save a sinking ship to worry about what some dude in general chat.

It was even a problem in beta. Something about the game drew in many of the worst of the genre and many complained on the offical forums about how it was driving players away.

A company that doesnt police the game has that affect and not it got what it deserved, a trip to F2P to try to save it.

Never said it was acceptable behavior, just said it's not worth the effort to have someone watching ever server for trolls when they will just come back anyway. Of course it shouldn't slide in any game, and it's disgusting and should be punished, but I'm not personally going to do anything about it, so why worry about it? Let someone who really cares enough try to report them.

Wait what?  "Free speech" doesn't protect people in a gaming community...lol give me a break people.  The company can do what is wants to them.  Which, in this case, appears to be not much.  

Jesus, I'm losing hope in the MMO community just reading through this thread.  People claiming free speech and that this is the OP's problem.  How is someone talking about raping children OP's problem?  I'm pretty sure that we can all agree that talking about this in global chat is not a super fantastic thing to do and that the company should do something.  The company in this situation, either lacks manpower to deal with it or they realize it would be a losing battle with a FTP game (the idiots can just make another account) or the company thinks this kind of thing is ok.

If you can't tell the difference in chat within a game that you have no idea who it is with chatting with someone face to face then you really have some issues. Pretty huge difference between an angery utterence in a game and a direct threat.

More important things than babysitting players who get upset everytime someone insults them in general chat.

 I'm really not trying to argue here, I'm just trying to help you see the companies point of view, even if you don't agree with it. And before someone comes in all 'OMG TERA FANBOI', I didnt play past the first week of release because the game itself is a bad fit for me personally, the community trolls is just another reason not to put up with it.

I do agree with what someone else said, you are going to be hard pressed getting rid of these people in a game with Elin no matter how you police chat channels. It was just done in bad taste to begin with, really should of thought that through for the western audience.

I did stop crying about it...I quit playing Tera. And, I have never seen chat like Tera's in any other mmo. So, your argument that it can't be avoided doesn't hold water. In other mmo's it is small scale and those individuals can easily be ignored. But, in Tera it is usually a conversation between many like minded people and it's harder to control via ignore. So, it's just easier to quit. And, I will never get "thick skinned" enough to tolerate sexual comments about children.
