Originally posted by achesoma Oops right on that; I knew had that mixed up. The lack of SF directing experience statement (for Irvin) stands, though. Around the same time, the Star Wars Trilogy appeared around the same time as LoTR, more or less.
I never saw Frodo say "with this you will pay", to be followed with "< crack > oh I'm dead now I'll pay with visa." Nobody actually said that, but just a point to highligt how absurd some one-liners are in some genre's . .. in Star Wars, you get other one-liners like "This is such a drag", in which C3PO's head was being dragged on the ground (ep-5). Many more exist.
[The Hobbit was dumbed down with Lucas style jokes, along with senseless fights to extend the film. - it includes stupid one-liners as well ruining the movie to me. I can't do justice to the phrase in The hobbit {when the Orc was being dropped over a cliff, stupid phrase}, like "oh I guess I will die now", (to Bilbo's plea to just Die Now).) .. but I saw it once, and it was pretty pathietic. Other scenese were bad too.]
J.R. Tolkien would roll in his grave. George Lucas just laughs.
/sigh
Movies today are dumb. They have no respect for what made the theme even possible. Just some new financial institual trying to make a quick buck. Nobody cares about fans, just about how much $$ they can make on the box office.

Originally posted by ktanner3 What´s this latest trend of consumers acting like they had ANY kind of profit if a movie or game makes better revenue? Who the hell cares, besides the studio? Do people have any benefit or justification if they can quote numbers like that? "Old" Star Trek was for a niche audience, and it should have remained niche. Why did this IP need to go mainstream blockbuster for a "broad audience", with lots of pew-pew, shiny FX and more attractive young actors? You just don´t get what a bad move it is to get Abrams for both Star Trek and Star Wars, they will use the very same formula for Star Wars and at the end there won´t be much difference apart from space ship design, mark my words. Prepare for Lensflare Wars and juicy actors right out of Disney Channel, lots of CG and no soul. Don´t forget to add generic jerk character #XY (Jarjar Binks type), add some "I´ve got a bad feeling about this" lines to the script and Star Wars 7 is ready for primetime.

Originally posted by FromHell Those first two statements contradict itself. If studios don't make money they can not make movies. To stay in business they need money. Star Trek was 'niche' audeince because it never got the exposure it deserved. The original Star Trek was cancelled because when it was aired no one was intersted in it. It became popular long time after tits cancelation due to low interest. I don't know who made this rule that niche automatically tanslates to quality or good. Niche or not Star Trek fans have always been waiting for the revival of the the series something which no one thought would ever happen. After Enterprise was canned it became clear that Str Trek days are gone. But JJ gave it a face lift and brought it up to date with the audience. As far as adding young actors, and fx is concerned how old do you think actors were in original Star Trek? and if Rodenberry had techonology back then you think he won't bust out all the FX? New Star Trek movie was way better than all of the later three instalations of Star Wars combined. |

I have never been a Star Trek fan. But, after watching the newer version, I am now a huge fan. I am excited that Abrams wants to put his creative genius in the Star Wars universe.

I wish someone would make a "hard" sci fi Starwars...but it would be dull and slow paced. Not that Space Opera is bad...Just after reading the Honor Harrington books..I want to see some "real" physics in my space movies
