Seriously.  I honestly don't understand how people followed that game and thought it was going to be a solid MMO.

Like yea i guess i was interested in at at first, but then they released info about the game and...just, no. My guild plays practically every MMO that comes out, especially PvP ones, we didn't even take an organised look at the beta for that game, i did download any play abit of the beta for lols, but i failed to find anything interesting about the game.

SWTOR sounded awesome on paper. Starwars universe MMO, a huge budget, a massively successful company behind it, the first fully voiced MMO, huge PvP battles of epic proportion and all the incredible ideas/systems they promised too.

Why did it fall over? Forced out the door by EA too early, Bioware could have done with more seasoned MMO developers on the project and a shoddy engine, infact the engine was one of the biggest downfalls overall.

I think to gloat on a forum and say you saw it coming, it looked crap to begin with blah blah is just a bit lame. When Minecraft was just surfacing people were calling it crap, saying it would never do any good, just another crap indie game.. well, who knew that would go on to make millions.

Now a bit more on topic..

It's just a game dude, it will be good or it won't. If it is, great, play it and enjoy. If it isn't, too bad, it happens daily in the entertainment industry.

I follow blogs, news sites and developer postings on like 5+ MMOs at a time, most never turn out to be any good but sometimes a game like FireFall for example is a diamond in the rough and I look forward to that coming out.

He sure is saying ALL the right things. I'll go as far to say he is untraining and retraining. Pulling the wool off the systems of the past 5 years. Kinda like that masked magician guy lol.

Stuff like this makes me laugh. The development plan was set in stone long before the first line of code was written.

Giving them more time would not do anything.

Classes were unbalanced, content was unfinished, Space combat wasn't half of what they promised, the raids were incredibly broken on release, the level of endgame content was poor, Illum (the PVP area) was a complete and utter disaster and the PvP maps we got at launch were both small and uninventive on the whole (Aside from Huttball). I could go on and on with what was wrong on release and what would have benefited from 6 months in the cooker.

It's a well known fact EA pushed it out the door early. You speak as if they had a development lifecycle and matched it to the T, when infact they had a release window of 2011 at one point and missed that by an entire year. So yeah, they might have had a plan but it sure didn't match any deadlines they had, hence why it was probably pushed out because it had already been far too delayed.

I'm not saying it'd of been game of the year or some monstrous success had it got another 6 months but first impressions are everything in this genre.

I could care less if it succeeded or failed(okay i might be alittle giddy it did) While i can see the appeal for a SW fan or somebody who love storys, for me somebody who plays MMO's for PvP? it had no appeal. didnt help that we just finished up with rift and where we learned "pvping" in PVE games isnt exactly fun, with people standing behind their guards being pussys, your options are ganking pvers and instanced pvp? yea, no, pass.

And yet, the problem wasn't how early it came out. The problem was its entire design. It was destined to fail.

A singleplayer only dev doing an MMO? Haha even on paper it sounded like a train wreck. Voice overs, instances, scripted quests? No. Not good for an MMO.

But yeah, MJ is saying all the right things. Its like he cracked my head open and read my dream feature list. Able to get lost in game? Death penalties? No fast travel? What's more, he's not just listing the features, but their impact on the world. He explains how getting lost sucks you in. It's fantastic. Finally, a veteran dev who both gets it, remembers what makes MMOs great, and has the ability to do something about it.

As long as he steers clear of

1- Viking helmets with horns on them

2- Leprechauns with pots of gold

3- Teen Merlin and Jockstrap Arthur

My interest may be retained.

They are great factions with lots of mythology and history draped upon their ancient soldiers but it could all go horribly wrong in interpretation. I dont think anyone is looking forward to voiceovers done as "Camelot the musical".

I can't help but comment,

I was one of those SWTOR fans before launch and after I enjoyed it till I capped then the game was dead. Repeats only where fun to get the main story in that's it and after repeating such bland material (Beyond the main story arch) time and time again it was just over for me.

The key issue i beleive for it's failing and i noticed this in multiple locations in game, " to many hands in the pot" making the game. To many leads and not enough focus.

Hah!

The writing about SWTOR was on the wall. You just chose to ignore it. They told us very clearly what kind of (crappy) MMO it's going to be. They even deliberately compared it to WoW and said it's going to play quite similar (well except for the smoothness, that only WoW has).

Now CU on the other hand sounds great, but of course can turn out to be crap anyway.

Oh come on! Viking helmets might not have had horns on them historically, but in a game it looks seriously badass and this is a fantasy world, after all :)

don't know about that, not in my opinion i didn't choose to ignore anything, what they said it had and what it turned out to have was not the same. Many complain about the space combat, I expected exactly what was there. Many complained about the class ablities, I expected exactly what was there.

What I didn't expect was the bland worlds and bland questing, that's what killed the game for me. The worlds felt stale each one of them, the questing was beyond redundent , different stories but all fetch and kill . One can argue that's what questing is, I argue if you played bioware titles before they have great stories and with something like this with the budget it had, I was expecting questing that would change. IE pick one path, next time you play different path or same if you pick the same responses etc. The depth wasn't there.

My comment about to many chiefs and not enough indians was basicly that to me it seemed after playing they had teams that did things (Which makes sense) but some teams had perfect focus while other ones basicly whipped it togather as they could. IE "these are good ideas, we don't have a world yet to put them in and try it, but you spend 3 months on that and if it  works we will use it" . to me , seemed like more waste in this project then actual project was my point.

edit; I have to say, i did enjoy the stories very much and the group missions (few and far between) along with combat was fun no matter the class, but it didn't help the bland worlds or general questing which was a majority of the game.

But I like the musical, I went to see it as a kid in Melbourne in 1964.  It was wonderfull!!

swtor was a great multipler game fro the story if that was what you were looking for. It was an empty shell of an mmo.

This game however... it's a kickstarter game. People expecting huge things from it right out of the gate are going to be disapointed and they only have themselves to blame.

Big games take big money and this one doesn't have it. That doesn't mean it can't be a great game. It just wont be one full of features like a big budget one would. If they stick to what they're trying to do and do it well, who knows what it can do with time and money. Just don't expect it all to be there at launch.

People are like cats. When they die, you get a new one.

You should always be sceptical when it comes to MMO's..... but on the other hand, has there been any MMO so far that has sound great on paper ? (the last couple of years)

SWTOR didn't sound great on the paper..... I was really hyped when I heard Bioware was doing a KOTOR MMO..... but then after that, everything they showed was just utter s h i t.......

I like everything that has been said about this MMO so far.... doesn't mean it's going to be a great MMO, but to me that's a big step forward.....

on paper I couldn't exactly fault GW2 there were some things i felt that were important missing from its launch, but overall i didn't think it looked bad and certainly a beacon of light in a sea of turds.
