Yes, it is not an MMORPG but an ARPG. Even the Dev's agree with you
"In summary, by choosing not to make Path of Exile a traditional MMORPG, we’ve attempted to reduce both the technical and business risks for a small team and focus on delivering a great action RPG." |

A bit off topic maybe, but this thread makes me wonder - what happened with a term >Hack&Slash< ? Hell, I could even - just to make fun of OP - call it MMO H&S. Why it is now "ARPG" instead? |

It is easier to Fight for Principles then it is to Live up to them. |

You can't blame people OP, there is so much misinformation out there not from the gamers themselves, but by websites like this listing games as MMO's when they are not. I myself thought this was a MMO when i first heard about it There needs to be a seprate section for these type of online games, it only creates confusion. Because, Then people get yelled at by depressed angry gamers on forums.

I haven't read any posts suggesting that PoE is an MMO let alone large numbers of people making that claim. Or are you just complaining because it is on this website?

PoE is a great game.

Would be great if it were an MMO, though. The loot system, the skill system.. Why is it that MMOs need to forego that sort of thing? Everything needs to be sterile and fair, so that everyone and their grandmother can be on a level playing field, but why is that so important? In MMOs, why must great gameplay like this get replaced by predictable loot and cookie cutter classes?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

From: http://www.pathofexile.com/game "Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. We're a small independent team of hardcore gamers based in New Zealand......................................"
I'm taking a shot of vodka every time I see a reference to a game being a WoW or Diablo clone. |

They should get rid of all these outdated acronyms like "MMORPG" and "ARPG" and replace them all with "Cooperative Roleplaying Avatar Programs". Problem Solved.
If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game. |

If PoE is an MMO, then League of Legends is an MMO and we all know this is not true. Regardless, they obviously cover this game as it caters to the type of people who visit this website.

Originally posted by Banquetto it not as simple as that, if you look up the definition of mmo, there are other factors involved, for example 1 characteristic is that the games presents a persistent virtual world (with or without instances imbedded) this is very different from a game that is simply a way to allow people to queue and group up. Example: in wow you are in a MMO when you are in the world (including when you are queuing) clearly a MMO. However in games like Diable etc you are sitting on your client alone when you are queing for your next instance. There are also numbers per instance to consider, you cannot really refer to the population of the instance as 'massive' if its only a few tens of player per instance.
rpg/mmorg history: Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (9500 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(350 elementalist) Now playing GW2/Diablo 3/Rift Waiting Archeage. |

Actually now that I've read that definition off the wiki I would have to disagree. According to that definition POE is definitly a MMO and its definitly one of the deepest RPG's ever created, so...MMORPG in my book.
