Ideally, a tutorial should be optional. Furthermore, an expert and novice level tutorials should be provided if possible. But to get rid of tutorials altogether? -Sure way to shoot yourself in the foot.

In City of Heroes / Villains you could collect badges in it. I thought it was quite innovative the way they made it so people actually hang about in a tutorial and made friends.

Regardless what we might have experianced, for a new person entering a MMO for the first time it still can be somewhat overwelming without a little guidens. Some say they loved Tortage tutorial in AoC, my opinion on that is that I was glad to finaly have left Tortage and finaly stepped into a more open world, simply because I don't play MMORPG's for it's single player campaign which I felt Tortage was. It's not to say I felt Tortage was bad, but it gave a overall false promise about the rest of the game because nothing like Tortage was seen else where after leaving the place. |

I definitely appreciate a clever tutorial/ intro to immerse me in the gameworld.
See LoTRO for an example of what I'm referring to. |

Optional pop-up tutorials are fine, at least if the game is complex and non-intuitive at first (like EVE and AoW, two games with a vast quality difference between their respective tutorials btw).
Personally I hate tutorials and prefer figuring things out on my own (one of the things I liked about MO was that it just dropped you into the world and let you find your own way), but I know that I'm in the minority here and that tutorials help bring new people in. |

I'm pretty sure most MMO's have the option to skip the tutorials. So why are you complaining about them?

Because playing through a tutorial is 100x more fun than reading a 20 page manual?

The concept of having to take a few seconds to look it up for themselves is absolutely beyond their comprehension. Heck, simply take a look at a Tech Support forum of any existing game, and on the same page you'll find several threads concerning the exact same issue, and yet if they bothered to look for a second they'd see the answer they're looking for is often found in those "Pinned" threads at the top of the forum conveniently named something along the lines of "(Please Read) Information concerning X". Mind-boggling. And people wonder why the genre is so dumbed-downed nowadays, the answer is right in front of you.

First time MMO players WILL need a tutorial to get started. So, an optional tutorial is fine.
And, OP, i you dont think new players need one, you have been playing for far too long... :-) |

I agree with the OP.
I started off gaming via King's Quest, Police Quest, and Quest for Glory PC series. Tutorial? lol. Never had 'em. Moreover, these games had "type commands" - a much more difficult mechanic than today's point and click. I was able to beat these games as a 5th grader.
Developers think we're idiots. Take a look at Zelda. When Zelda released for the NES, it had no tutorial at all. I remember collecting my firsrt blue coin. I saw that I had 5 more green coins just for picking it up. If you pick up a blue coin in a modern Zelda, you can expect to see a screen pop-up like this:
"Congrats! You have found your first blue coin! A blue coin is worth 5 green coins! With coins, you can purchase items from the store. In order to find a store, push "Start" on your controller and look at the map. If you have enough coins to buy an item, then click on the item you want to buy. If you don't have enough coins, then you will need to get more coins. In order to get more coins, you must either defeat enemies or find them. You can find them by burning bushes, moving rocks, selling goods, or gambling. A green coin is worth 1 coin. A blue coin is worth 5 coins. I red coin is worth 20 coins. A purple coin is worth 50 coins. A diamond coin is worth 100 coins. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah." Wow! Finding something in a Zelda game is like having to click through an entire book.
If there must be a tutorial, there should be an optional link to a tutorial section of the game's website. This in-game "hands-on" crap is just stupid.

first, skip tutorial. second, ask the shit out of "/general" to answer all questions that tutorial would have answered on doing. "I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!" |

Dont you check global chat? Most of the questions are retarded like how do I attack? How do I open my bag? I visualize the average mmo player as a 12 year old child with down syndrome untill they prove otherwise. And so do the developers.
