Excellent game! Been getting my teeth into it on the Russian server (yes! there is an enlish speaking guild) Fresh mechanics, fresh lore, deep system, excellent crafting. What elses could a boy ask for?

Comments like this make you realize that the person either

  1. Never played the game at all
  2. Or-  Gave up within a few hours of playing the game, and never really got a feel for the combat

Combat in Age of Wushu is actually one of the most fluid combat systems I've ever played, and the animations are great.  And I have played just about every major MMO released in the last 10 years, so I have a wealth of experince to back that opinion up.

Compared to say TSW (which is a badass game, other than the combat)  AoW's combat is lightyears ahead.

Combat takes time to perfect it, you need to practice a lot by pvping other players. once you get used to the combat, you can't go back to other MMOs, it's the best. for those who quit or uninstalled that quicky, good for you, this game is not for noob.

I love this game so far. I think the review/preview was dead on. The horrible, disconjointed GUI and the underdeveloped localization are what scare people off the most. I'd also add that the tutorial system, or lackthereof, will also frighten people off. I've played for about a week or so now and I'm addicted. From someone who has played nearly every mainstream MMO and many smaller/independent MMOs, I'd say it's a great game. Does it need work? Absolutely. Even to keep me, the GUI MUST BE IMPROVED. I hope they continue to work at it and hopefully it'll be one of the deepest MMOs in the genre.

No, sorry, me scares most that i spend hours and hours into a game that is published here by a well known greedy publisher, to finally see that i can have "top notch" only with aditional payments above a normal sub fee.

Due to its publisher Gala Networks, all trust was gone with Allods already.. ..

AoW is nice, no doubt, but it has heads that wanna see your bucks, and they wont stop to tell you that.

Not sure what you mean by that tbh, it's not comparable to the "hitting thin air" as you do in Vanguard.

I've actually done some zen and tai chi practices in real life (the former really hurts your ass like shit after a time :p), and the game follows many movements almost exaclty like that. Of course the real thing is still quite different, but the suspension of disbelief is definitely there.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

game is just a money grap, everything is shallow except the combat system which is fun.

this is just a pay to win game i.e. SNAIL NA is selling gold which can be used to train skills, buy in-game skills e.g. flying skills, faster horse via cashshop and in the future they gonna sell advance skills via the cashshop.

the biggest turn off are the time limited items e.g. horses which has such a great impact on the activities e.g. school war, pvping etc.

once you get over the combat system the rest of the game is just one big grind i.e. doing the same thing over and over again e.g. daily quest repeatables, spying, gathering.

my motto if a game plays like work, hell I'll take work anything at least I get paid.

my 2 cents

Sigh...do you not know what a sandbox is mister previewer?  Call AOW a free skil progression game, where you can level your skills in any ORDER you want, but do not call it a sandbox because it is not one.

In sandbox games, you BUILD things.  Your create things on the land, you are given the tools to modify the world to your liking.  Whether it is a city building system, or a housing system, or a guild system, or crafting/resource system...you physically alter the world.  Each server might look or even play totally different because of this.

See, here's the thing (without the melodramatic sighing): there is no industry or community accepted definition of a sandbox.  I don't think a sandbox equals building at all.  At its base I think sandbox means freedom.

In a real literal sandbox we don't always build.  Sometimes we take toys we have and play with them.  Sometimes we construct things.  It is just an empty place you have freedom to play how you like.

Building is good. Changing the environment is good. That doesn't mean every sandbox must have those elements.  Saying that any sandbox must adhere to a strict ruleset or it's not one is subjective at best and myopic in reality.  Even without the abilityto change the surrounding environment every server can be totally different because of how the community has built their characters and structured their social system.

I agree.

I also find it strange that the article writer calls it a sandbox then complains about the lack of a "centralized core experience", I am not sure he realises the contradiction.

Totally agree.. sandbox does not mean "building".  By that measure you could have argued legoland (or whatever it was called) online was a sandbox.  It means you have freedom and a real way to put your stamp on the game such as owning territory or single handedly changing the whole economy by your business genius.  That could mean building true but it's only one way of expressing the overall idea.  A sandbox doesn't even have to allow you to build anything to be a sandbox.  True this is arguable but you won't find any game with all the features that have at one time been in a sandbox mmo we have a few standard ideas that support the term and that makes it a much more flexible type of mmo than the op seems to want to make it.  Which at it's basis is what's so great about the mystical sandbox.

I don't see myself playing this no matter how good it turns out to be. Once upon a time Snail games had a game called "Age of Armor" it was one of the few mech mmorpgs out there. They purposely removed certain drops off mobs to encourage case shop use. Game turned into a p2w frenzy with very little way to work to the top.Level 10 enhancers cost roughly 10-12k US dollars to make.(yes there was a few people dumb enough to get them) Maybe this company has changed? I highly doubt it though. End result of AoA. That game became barren and eventually died out. Will snail game let a similar fate happen to Age of Wushu? Only time will tell.

Any proof to back up that statement?

AoW in China is certainly ptw (they sell exclusive skills in the CS afaik), but so far Snail seem to be aware that they'll seriously alienate the Western audience if they implement obvious ptw mechanics in the the game and since AoW could be a big niche hit here I doubt they'll go down that route (still, we can never know ofc). The current system is not ptw though - sure you can buy gold but you don't have to. You can just as well earn it in game and buy those skill books or whatever.

Most ftp games feature exp boosts, cosmetic gear and in some cases currency in their CS - does that mean they're all ptw? To me ptw means you HAVE to pay money to compete, i.e. there are stuff in the cash shop that can't be found in game.

As for the whole "grind" argument: yes if grind = doing the same thing several times in a row, there is a grind in AoW. Just like in every other MMO, there is character progression and this means you will have to do certain activities several times to advance. But unlike most games, AoW offers a very wide spectrum of activities and it does not force you to do any of them if you don't like to.

For example, I don't enjoy PvE farming so I've never done any dungeons (except as an assasin which means you're teleported in to act as a mob for those who run the instance) or any quests at all. But the quests and dungeons are still there and people do them. Rare drops from dungeons are sellable and the best flying skills which are only dropped in dungeons are always sold on the market. So instead of farming a dungeon over and over, a player like me can earn money from kidnapping, bounty hunting, escorting and crafting and then buy what he needs from other players.

This is good design imo. You don't have to do anything in particular to progress, instead you have a wide array of options. Some might suit your preferences better than others, which means people do different stuff = variety. The exp and event timers means you'll not be doing one thing 24/7 even if you'd like to, which also = variety.

It's still a game though and games will always be limitied in a way. But if you believe AoW is "a grind" you obviously have not played many MMOs.

The game is no more Pay to win than GW2.  It has exactly the same type of cashshop GW2 has, with zero differences.

There are so many issues, I hardly know where to begin.

Im only going to focus on the worst one, in my opinion.

I could not make sense of much of the text in the game "that Is when it wasn't given to me in chinese".

my husband and I found ourselves looking at English words that seemed like someone had put chinese words through an automatic translater, and then not taken any time to check the results. Then end result was that most sentances were confusing and just made no sense.

In the end we gave up trying to make sense of it all and stopped playing the game after trying it for 3 days.

Most of our time was spent trawling the internet to find any guidance on the game and what one quest or another was really saying.

Frankly this game needs a "human" translator to sort out its wierd idea of english.

As much as I've been cringing because Age of Wulin is not available yet, I'm starting to feel gpotato is doing the right thing taking their time translating and localizing the game properly before public release.

Of course their version still might turn out to be as crappy, but one can hope...

I do not think people understand what pay to win is. Currently ( outside the beta thing-free players / time restrictions ) all paying money to snail does nothing more then subtract from the in game time needed to accomplish the same task. ie not pay to win, just a pay for express lane.

Even from what I understand, the Chinese version the skills that are available in the store are no more powerful then any other skill in game ( they still need to be leveled as well). They are simply flashier. Since I have not played this, I am only speaking from what I have heard.

AoW currency system is different. As with other system limitations ( vigor ) at first I really disliked it. Once I understood how it worked and how to generate money I enjoy it.

-Bound ( basically worthless) used to buy needed materials for crafting / gathering / birds for mail / knockout powder for kidnapping as well as the cheap horse.

-Unbound ( The real currency of the game, bound really is about helping you gain this money) Gained through kidnapping / bounties / joining the economy through crafting / gathering. Also can be attained through exchanging 'gold' snail's currency (real money).  Kidnapping is easy, the longer the char has been offline the better. The economy is a bit tricky for those that have no clue. Crafting you will need friends...there is no way around it. The money making professions (Tailor, Crafter, Blacksmith) usually will require several components from other crafting skills. Look for a Guild or just someone of the needed profession to work with. The other professions (Chef, Poisonmaker, Herbalist ) are generally poorer but can make money selling the right things ( they are needed for enhancing armor, accesories, weapons). Just straight gathering ( mining prob the best ) and selling makes good Liang, all the gathering skills are attainable.

The best gear is player crafted. There are many things that decay to keep the economy lively ( which can be crafted almost from the start ) from hunger to bags to the armor.

As far as purchasing the unbound money with real currency...This happens in every mmo. I have yet to see a mmo without 'goldsellers'. Time is money. For some people to shell out 50 dollars as opposed to a night /week /month of ginding is their preferrence. I tend to just play the game, but if I was to buy in game currency in order to save time,  I'd prefer the company that made the game give me the option this way I can continue to support them.

Just a note if you are out of time on your free trial, create a new account and you can even try a new school (seeing the animations from other skill sets is helpful). If you do not wish to create a new account really just spend $20, if that is more then you can afford maybe playing a mmo is something you should not be doing.

The game is big deal, not some cheap asian grinder. Its very hard to capture attention of MMO vet that played everything and tired of everything. This game captured mine and Im still playing after a month

It's a beta.

The reason the UI seems so awkward is that the UI is designed for ideograms where one word takes the same space as one letter (Chinese simplified character set) vs. English where one word can be one letter ("a" "I") or a bunch of letters ("everything" "consequentially," "califragiwhateveritisexplialidocious")

As a result, a UI designed to say,

"Your quest reward is a ____" (6 words, 6 characters)

Is going to want to fit

"Your q"

...in English.

This has got to be giving them a few unhappy hours here and there, as they seem to be happier working with art than English, from my basic observations...  Where we tend to think about a lot of programming having to do with word wraps and paragraphs and formatting of text blocks, the problems with formatting Chinese and large amounts of Roman text are fundamentally very different.  (It's called the Roman alphabet regardless of whether the language is a romance or Germanic language, btw, just as we call our number Arabic numerals rather than Roman numerals even though our mathematics is really mostly Greek ;).

Age of wulin is EU version of AoWushu. SnailG. dont develop the game, they just tranlate it and optimize it for US market same as GPotato for EU. Also its worth noting that EU version will be VIP-option free.

as for the game, I love it.... I love kung fu films and all this fantasy magical setting in other mmos is making me sick... Realistic setting is refreshing, scenes are beautifull, art and architecture is amazing.. With its complexity i would compare this game to EVE - and thank god to that.

my score: betaversion - 7/10

Release version - if they correct the UI, translations and starting tutorials it might as well be the best and most innovative F2P  mmo in years... None of the f2p has got me so hooked.
