Also, I was curious so found this (regarding op) At the time that Empire was written and released, Leia was not meant to be Luke's sister. Luke instead had an unnamed sister, also undergoing Jedi training, on the opposite end of the galaxy. It is also possible that had Luke fallen to the Dark Side, then it would stand reason that Obi-Wan wouldn't want to get Leia involved, as both her brother and father had fallen to the Dark Side |

If you have not looked into the lore of Star wars you should, for they are brother and sister. technically they are twins so if this was to change it would be one stupid and two really stupid. JJ better not mess with the timeline honestly but It is a wait and see with this.

I believe he's commenting on the new Star Wars trilogy reboot/remake....Leia may not be Luke's sister. Lucas was a terrible story teller......

If this is true, it sounds like another "Alternate Reality" that Abrams is so fond of (ie-Fringe, Star Trek)

Lucas revealled in the making of Return of the Jedi that he made Leia Luke's sister during the making of ROTJ as a motivation why Luke would become so angry to fight Vadder despite knowing that it was what the Emperor wanted him to do. Like most things, it wasn't mapped out at all, making for some akward Luke/Leia scenes in ANH and ESB.
I hadn't heard anything about a retcon, if OP has, I wish he would say where he heard it from. |

agree - regardless of the "would have" / "could have" the existing lore is they are brother/sister
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sequel_trilogy It is important to note that at the time The Empire Strikes Back was made, Leia was not intended to be Luke's sister or the 'Other'. This has been corroborated by both Gary Kurtz and Mark Hamill. By the time Return of the Jedi was being scripted, George Lucas had decided that the story would not continue past Episode VI, and so, had to tie up this loose end. Making Leia both Luke's sister and the Other did so, as well as resolving the love triangle with Han

Originally posted by Grinnz Yep, some of the early versions of Lucas's script have really awful ideas, writing, and names. Star Wars was really punched up by a couple of the passes made by more experianced writers. Leigh Bracket in particular. Lucas's strength was in the visuals, not the other aspects.
Let's hear it for Luke Starkiller!
Doesn't mean that the story can't be really messed up by the new take on it. If you are waiting for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Episode_VII#Episode_VII Lucas has said a lot about the third trilogy over the years, much of it contraditory or just lame. Amongst that exists the following- "The focus would be on Luke Skywalker's journey to becoming the premier Jedi knight, with Luke's sister (who was not Leia) appearing in Episode VIII, and the first appearance of the Emperor, and Luke's ultimate confrontation with him, in Episode IX (a storyline as planned pre-1980, according to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz)."
I'm not entirely sold on JJ Abrams directing, but it could be worse *cough*Lucas* |

Originally posted by Arglebargle Leigh Bracket wrote the first draft for ESB, Lucas rejected it and asked for another, she couldn't because she was batteling cancer. Lucas ended up writing the screenplay himself and brought in Lawrence Kasdan to help finalize it. Virtually nothing of Bracket's work appears in ESB, Lucas however gave her credit instead of placing his name there. |

Originally posted by negilum And that's why the dialogue is poor and cliche. Comparing the pre-Brackett and post Brackett scripts show some important changes. Kasdan did some good work on it as well. Certainly better than the versions that had Luke as the tubby farm boy who didn't want to leave home and was forced into the war. Etc.
Lucas tends to redo or re-remember some of the history of things as time goes by.
American Graffitti showed that Lucas could do really good stuff, but post original trilogy, he's mostly been riding the gravy train.
We'll see if Abrams has some sort of appreciation for the setting, or if he just likes to toss things about. If you are waiting for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one. |
