Impressions

After 13 hours of play, I've made it to level 10 on my Disciple. I've tinkered with a couple of other classes as well and taken my time exploring and doing a bit of harvesting and diplomacy.

If you are into RP and you don't have a game you're satisfied with, you (and your guild) should really try this game. I mean give it a good long try. I'm not into role play myself, but I can see the potential everywhere I go. My main in in Khal now. I went into the Tradewinds Tavern, upstairs. If you see a door you can open it. There are beautiful rooms where you can sit and have RP events. Any door I've seen, I've been able to open, in any building (except for the rat tunnels near the first quest area about level 3.

Is this a sandbox? I know there are levels and quests, but there really isn't a lot of handholding. You can do what you want to do. The world is huge. That's why I started playing. I was tired of instanced, corridored world, and this is not that. There are some "chunks" of the world where if you go over a seam in one of the areas, you might freeze up for a second or two, but I heard if you're running on an ssd that won't bother you. It's fine for me. I just love the open spaces and freedom to explore and do whatever I feel like working on. There are dungeons everywhere and they are open (non-instanced). I think this is much like what I wanted from a sandbox. But there is no pvp, so if you need that in your sandbox, you wouldn't like it. If this is not a sandbox, it is very sandboxy for a themepark. But I don't think it's really a themepark, either. Also, there is continental banking. So if you're stuff is in the bank, can only access it on that continent. There are 3 continents. Also, there is shipbuilding and you can build other structures (houses?). You can have your own house on a plot in the world which is not instanced.

Cash shop: I don't see any pay to win. There are some equipment sets you can buy from level 11, 21, 31, etc that boost your stats and help you level faster. They are pretty cheap. I forget how many station points they are. In a way, I can see how this makes up for the smaller population that leveling, since you can't really trade easily with other crafter or buy what you want on the auction house. I had some money left over from Planet Side 2, since I bought the Alpha whatever to get into beta. Also, I had some Station Cash from when I bought DCUO. So altogether I had 5000 SC I forgot about. I bought a cool mount to get around the huge world. If you are a free player, you can buy a horse in the starter town for 12 silver and change, which is not very much. It won't be as fast as the cs mount, though. You can also buy various xp boosting items. I don't see a need for those yet since I'm leveling pretty quickly and having a good time at my present pace. There is also bag space and bank space. I'm still thinking about whether I want to become a member. Main benefit I can see right now is better loot drops and faster xp gain. Probably will sub, but doing fine with the loot at my present level. I don't see the cs as objectionable in any way at this point if you think of VG ftp as a trial. Also, I think you can play the game without getting the leet gear for free.

Economy: I don't know how it is at the higher levels, but I wanted to pick up some lowbie stuff for my level 10 but there was nothing listed on the auction. I'm doing fine with the stuff I've gotten to drop and as quest rewards. I don't know how it is for the higher levels.

Graphics: It took me about 10 hours to get used to them and now they are totally fine, although my toon riding on the spirit wolf looks a bit stiff. From the beginning, I thought the epic graphics of 2007 were still serviceable today. It was a trade off for me to be able to get an amazing world to play in and gameplay that right now seems more complex and interesting than what's on offer with today's crop of releases, no matter how pretty the graphis and the action combat is. If you can't get past the dated graphics and somewhat stiff combat animations because you can't endure putting at least 10 hours into the game, then you don't even need to bother trying VG. For me, I'm glad I looked beyond that. Now the graphics look fine and the world is actually beautiful with day/night cycles that are noticeable, weather, and beautiful vistas. The character animations are fine as well and I've come to appreciate them for what they are.

Population: I'm on Telon server.  I didn't care about seeing a lot of people in the suggested starter area. I chose to go to my racial hometown of Khal to start. I play at Oceanic times, so I'm used to quiet North American servers. I did see a couple of other people in the starter area with me, but there is a lot of space, so we didn't run into each other while doing our starter quests. When I'm ready to log off late at night, I can see more players starting to come into the game. I saw higher level players on their flying mounts and in the bank. Probably, when I logged off there were about 12 players in the Khal bank. It was Tuesday morning about 1AM at GMT +9. I'm not sure how the population is in other areas of the world.  I saw a couple of guilds recruiting in chat, including an Oceanic one. People are also talking in chat, sometimes about lag, which hasn't been a problem for me yet.

That's it for now. I'm looking forward to going back in and continuing my journey. I'm splitting my time between VG and LOTRO right now, so kind of going back and forth and the mood takes me when I have time to play.

Has anyone else started VG recently and are you thinking of sticking with it?

I am glad your first impressions are good and that you are enjoying the game.

I'm returing after about a year absence... prior to that I had played since launch.  I'm really enjoying my return and it has reminded me about how incredible deep and complex this game really is.  And after playing Rift, SWTOR and GW2 it is refreshing to be back in a game that has the best community I have ever been a part of.

I don't know if there are active RP guilds playing right now or not.  But there used to be and they would hold many community events in taverns, races, fishing tournamnents, guild hall openings, etc.  My guild isn't a RP guild, but when we finished our Guild Hall we had nearly 100 people over for our 'Grand Opening'.

As you said, this game is a great home for folks that like to RP.

Been playing for about 10 days now, really like the game. Sure the graphics are a bit old and there are bugs here and there but the gameplay itself makes up for everything.

The world is huge, not just in terms of how much there is to explore but also in character development. The entire diplomacy part of the game is really complex and although I doubt there are enough people online at any time (I am currently on the EU server which is quiet) but the concept behind it is really great.

The crafting as well is really involved. I always get into crafting and the one thing that always bothers me in recent games is that when you make something you know exactly what it is. And when you hit max level you have already outlevelled the items you can make. Well in VG you really see progression. It is great (although I am sure some might say it is just a grind) to work on something and the more you practice the better you get. To start you struggle to make a grade C item, then over time you gradually get better untill you get to a point where you can, usually, make grade A items regularly and Grade A items are possible. Making that first Pristine bag with an extra 2 slots....sweet!

I am just enjoining exploring the world (did a dungeon last night with a few others and the mine we went into was huge, I mean really huge!) and playing around with the classes and having fun.

It is a rough around the edges Diamond for me

I might actually transfer to Telon server if the population is better. Any one on the Telon server thoughts on population?

It's an old game, and as such it will be top-level heavy with whatever number of players are playing.  It's more like EQ, but without any of the lore.

Vanguard was a failed game in every sense of the word.  When it was released it just didn't work.  It past the point of no return and people left.  SOE bought it and fixed a lot of the glaring technical issues it had and it turned into a decent game.

But I always got the sense that the lore of the game was more smoke and mirrors.  In EQ, they created everything and then built the world around that lore.  It always felt backwards with Vanguard.  For instance, when they introduced racial mounts, it felt like they just picked whatever model fit a specific race.  I think Gnomes had a lobster mount, or something like that...lol.  Then they went and created lore as to why a Gnome would have a lobster mount and it never really felt convincing.

There was also a ton of empty areas in the game that were simply unfinished.  Yes, the game world is pretty big but an unfinished game world is an unfinished game.  The Dark Elf area had a city area inside a mountain that looked pretty cool, but nothing was ever done with it.  Maybe they changed it since.

Not a lot of people play this game, and when a lot of the content is group orientated (like original EQ) and the population is low...well, you will not be doing certain dungeons.

One major problem I had with the game was with the loading mechanics.  Things would pop into view at a very short distance.  Not sure if they ever fixed this, or even if they can because the engine is so old.

I too had a disciple.  That is the class to play as it is a great solo class AND a great group class.  One thing where Vanguard shines above just about every MMO is the classes, especially the Healer classes.  They are stand outs.  Some of the best designed classes in any MMO are the Disciple, Cleric and the Bloodmage.

Also, you can just be a crafter or a diplomat and not do any fighting at all.  That was a breath of fresh air.

If you have a solid group of people, this is a decent game to play.  Problem is that there are better games if you have that same group of players.  Original EQ is still better, the newer zones are much better looking that the older ones.  EQ2 still has a massive amount of content, solo ro gorup.  LOTRO has great small group content and stellar classes.

Mael, if you get involved in crafting and diplomacy it is well worth it to really get into the Lore.  The story behind the game, the factions, the history is really fasinating and fun to immerse yourself in.  With all the guides online, you can find the answer to pretty much anything you need, but when the game was new, understanding and diving into the lore was critical to figuring out quest lines, what to do next etc.

When I first started playing, I got so hooked on diplomacy that I out-leveled my adventuring sphere. So even though my diplomacy level was rising, my adventuring level was low and it was hard for me to travel from one location to another safetly.  I learned to stick to the roads and the trails and travel during the day.   I was obsessed with the diplomacy quest lines... epsecially between the High Elves and the Dwarves.  Each sphere has significant lore involved, but unless you delve into all three you don't get the full picture.

There are a lot of new players online now and they seem unaccustom to reading the lore to help them complete quests, etc.  There is a bit too much dependancy on easy mode that you get from other games on the market.

Part of the reason I've been slow to level in this game and in LOTRO is that I'm just stopping to read everything. I want to know what's going on. As long as it's interesting, I will read it. If it starts to get boring or seem like a waste of time, I will stop. So far it has been pretty interesting. As far as I've gotten, it's more like reading the first page of a prologue of a really epic book.

Of course, I can't comment on whether VG's story/lore will turn out to be "epic" actually. Just that it's interesting to me, so far, in my little starter area of Khal. And I know not everyone will like the lore. But I'm definitely not playing this game for the action combat, although it's alright for me now.

It's also interesting about the 3 spheres of adventuring/crafting/diplomacy. I feel like each character has 3 totally different aspects or leveling paths. So if you feel like just chilling out and killing some mobs and exploring around, you go out and do some quests. Alternatively, if you don't feel like killing stuff or crafting, you can go gather materials.  If you want to read, research, tinker, you do crafting.  And diplomacy looks like a whole other thing. I'm curious about it, but I've just completed the tutorial on it. Have to get into that later.

Basically, I'm enjoying the game as a kind of game explorer. I want to see what VG is about either as a present living game or as a kind of gaming-museum exhibit of what could have been. But for now, I like it a lot and I can see continuing to play this along with LOTRO. VG is certainly much more interesting and fun for me than any of the mmorpgs that have launched in the past  5 years except maybe TSW, which I'm on an indefinite hiatus from.

They really should have just removed the EU server, it just confuses new players. EU server is not active, noone really plays there, all the EU guilds transferred to Talon a few years ago. EU pop is about 10 people online at any time, while US varies between 200-800.

If it wasnt full of cheaters and hackers duping items and buying lockboxes from SOE then force crashing themselves for a rollback and free items, maybe. But as it is now its a huge mess, they should realm-reborn VG like SE is doing to Final Fantasy.

If that's true, it's sad that people would go to such lengths for whatever "reward" in a virtual world. However, I don't see how that could be a problem for me because I don't think this is a competitive game like that. I'm not competing with those players. I'm just having fun. I don't care what kind of shinies they have or how they got them. I'm only concerned with my gameplay experience. I'm sure I can find people to group with who don't care about enhancing their sense of self worth by cheating in a game.

Basically, even if that is true, I don't think it really harms my experience of the game. If this were a competitive pvp game, I would look at this differently.

I can find a group or a guild at anytime, There is no better game all the other are feed you with a spoon this game isnt you have to read and use your head.

Started playing a couple of days ago. I'm really enjoying it. It feels like a living world and not a series of levelling areas. Love that the emphasis isn't all on combat too. Looks like a viable option for more sandboxy players.

VG has everything i look for in an mmo, except the god awful character models and animation.  You can say its fine all you like (and if you dont mind them more power to you) but they are terrible.  Watch a monk with fist weapons, looks like a right hand pitcher throwing with his left.

Its the only problem I have with it.  Other than that hells ya its a great mmo.

I was one of the many who bought the game in 2007 and between the steep hardware requirements and unfinished state of the game made it impossible to stick around when there were other options at that time. But as the years have gone on and mmo's have become so simple that a 10 yo can play and play well<yup, firsthand from watching my own son play WoW /GW etc at 10 years of age> I recently returned and I can say without question that the game is outstanding. Does it need some char animation love?? Yup. Does it need some attention is a few other areas? Yup. But the fact is the open world is outstanding. Its one of the most beautiful worlds out there. I personally compare it to LoTRo as far as world graphics are concerned. Crafting, Diplomany and adventuring are all deep and immersive. The mentoring system is well thought out and it mean I can group with anyone at any level. The population in just the past month or so has increased dramaticly as there are many players, both new and old running about the world. If the question is "Is this game for me" Ask yourself if you enjoy a non instanced world where you can go anywhere and do anything you want. Ask yourself if you want an easy button, or do you want to really learn how to play a class/race combo and be good at it. Ask yourself if you want a challenge everytime you walk away from a city or camp, because the world is a dangerous place at times and not for the faint of heart. There are peneltys for death, and rewards for success. Ask yourself if you miss the days when you had to think about a pull and a good tank was worth his weight in gold. Ask if you enjoy the group dynamic that employed CC, FD pulls, aggro mgmt and classes that matter. Ask if you want a mature, helpfull community that wants the game and its players to enjoy success and most importantly have fun. If you anserwed any of these yes, then VG is for you. If your a solo type player who has no interest in social interaction or group play then this game is not for you.

You know, I hadn't really realized until I read this just how absent a lot of these are in most games today. Makes me sad.

Has the game any open world PVP yet, or PVP at all?

It's not a sandbox, any more than original EQ was. It holds your hand quite a bit more than oldschool MMOs, but far FAR less than any AAA post WoW anymore.

QFT

The days of group dynamics are gone. Nowadays, every class is a solo class. Not to mention, the demographic of the average MMO player has changed drastically over recent years, which is why simpler, less intuitive games like WoW fare better than games with depth, such as Vanguard.  Although bugs and poor design execution didn't exactly help Vanguard.

Your absolutley correct in the fact that its launch was an un-mitigated disaster that put players off the game for years and some forever.  Also correct that in newer mmo's everyone is a solo god. But I guess Im just at the point where I need depth. Where I need a decent community and social interaction with said community.  But my son <now 14> Joined VG a week ago, and told me last night that he's having as much fun ina  game as he ever had. That he appreciated the challenges the game offers and for that I'm very happy. Again..VG is not for everyone. Especially if all you've known is the  WoW 's and clones,  the GW's , the SWTOR's. But if its depth and challenge you want, then give it a shot for a week or more, as many classes dont come into thier own till mid lvled. Join an active guild and interact with the community, you just might find it fills a void in the gaming word thats been un-occupied for a long time :)

We live for The One, we die for The One.

well i would like to add some a bit different view

don't get me wrong: i am also a fan of vanguard - that and ac2 are currently my favorite mmorpgs. BUT: everyone is "crying" here how all the newer mmorpgs are made easy, soloable and for casuals. well nothing strange about that: not only the newer generation of gamers is used to that, but also we, who started with muds and first generation of mmorpgs, are different now.

i see it on myself - i would gladly group a lot of time .... but when i do, its usually just for 1 dungeon run or 1 or 2 quests. why? reason is simple - real life. times when i could spend whole day playing online games like in college are gone, now with 8 hr of work a day, 2hrs on the way to and from work and other things around, i just dont have time to spend my time running around with group, not to mention waiting for it to get together etc. its easier to just do things solo when i can and this way i can finish playing any time i want w/o feeling bad for leaviing the group in the middle of dungeon run.

edit: btw, i had a friend in college who once came into computer lab monday morning and left friday evening :) (seriously)
