Hey all, I just threw this together this last couple days. I would run off to KS and start a big campaign but I would rather wait awhile. Besides I haven't decided if this engine is good enough to make a MMO yet. I mean only 2 days ago it was just a flat surface and some idea. Not like aI spent 9 years writing documentation this time. I am just on the fly making shit up as I go. And there is also the big question am I really a developer or just some guy with a good notepad and video program and some far fetched dream to make a large open world with nothing but terrain. I mean I though about PvP and Monsters and maybe some crafting and housing but then I gotta get it out fast! Hey it takes a lot of work to make my own stuff by myself but at least it gets done eventually well maybe eventually. well give it a vote.

Why so negative wish I could do something like that looks pretty neat to me considering you just knocked it up.

Why have you created a world? Lobby only games are the future, there are over 8000 posts on the subject on this site alone.

See now this is the issue, add some particles, make the land look prettier (foliage + trees), add some static (position) creatures animating, even make a rudimentary combat system, get some people to play or stand around chatting, viola, hit Kick Starter, gets monies, run out of monies never finish project, or make new Kick Starter for more monies.
Worked for Pathfinder (though pathfinder has a list of awesome game dev's), Greed Monger. (I'm not saying these won't be completed or be good). What I am saying is, this is a issue with Kick Starter and the potential it provides to scam people. Pretty good for a few days messing around in a game engine though. |

Originally posted by Zairu Anyone can create that in two days with a lot of the engines and kits that are out now. ArChWind presents a very valid point about these Kickstarter projects and the way people buy into them like they are the second coming despite most of them being little more than what ArCh created.
EDIT: I read further down and saw that you plan on expanding that. Good luck with the project, ArCh. Keep us posted on how it goes! filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community. Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix? filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |

Thought I would say this here in public.
I been around this MMO making business now as a serious (even that is questionable) hobbyist for some 11 years. I came into this circle and another circle thinking I was right and knew it all at which a few others may have been rubbed the wrong way but it was all for the good in the end. Sure I have 29 years of computer programming and can program in four languages and 12 years of live real time data systems but I lack to many needed skills that is is not even funny to be called more than a hobbyist in this business. Building a large complex system of complex systems is a major undertaking but it is still doable although it takes a LOT of time or a LOT of money and sometimes a LOT of both.
After my team fell apart the first time I sat back and looked at the picture but still had this arrogant attitude and that know it all of my design which one member here called me on it. As time progressed I realized the mistakes I made and declared my future of MMO development a disaster which was my own fault. Yeah, I pissed on a lot of top dogs including major television studios and publishers and game developers.
Now with that said I decided that I would wise up. The reasons I never had or will ever have a website is to keep the thing under radar while I work on it. Until it is fully functional there is little reason what so ever to even make it public but I was just trying to make a point that people tend to believe to much in what they see which Lok here saw that I was driving a point. The probability of getting more than a basic building block of the design will still take years so the time this would get released, MMORPGs may well be history. SO.. no it is probably not going to be a published game but I like to dream it will be my MOVW.
Another thing is Kickstarter is just a very bad idea unless you have a complete working model that you can put out the final product in a matter of a few months. The reason is that most of these projects are running at the level I did in the past so keep in mind they most likely will fail.
There are only a few Kickstarter project I see that have a good chance of making it but the rest are a lost cause simply because they are not realistic in the goals, using the wrong engine for those goals or making some variant copy of what a AAA publishers already has released.
Take it with a grain of salt but it is true.
I will not be making much more available in the future just a look here what sucks and that is why I choose to post in the board. Not to many come here so it is a good place to get a little feedback if it sucks or doesn’t suck as much as it sucked before. :) Also maybe pick up a few good peeps that really want to make a VR not some goddamn game. |

Originally posted by ArChWind Like you, I class myself as a hobbyist(not an "indy developer" as some KS bs claim "cough cough" greed monger ), I'm not releasing information about my game (goddamn game, as you put it, heh) until I have all the frame work completed and a functional working technical demo (alpha/beta) that possible kick-starter backers can play, this will allow them to decide and visualise what the game is to more clearly choose to back the project or not. I too have been around a while ;) , it's nice to know you have the confidence to carry on, since you seem to be a bit hard on yourself, and maybe over time you have become more humble. You can't please all of the people, all of the time. But your right in most cases with the kick-starter, while I don't claim this or that kick-starter will succeed or fail, the potential success of one can be judged from scrutinising the developers, their previous projects or even their ability, you could even put a % success rate to them. And really things like engine changes are not that major early on (semi dependent on what they have built with) or if the team has the ability. So good luck on your project, and have a second thought about a website when it's the right time, think of it as a developer diary, it's good to track your progress during development and allows you to iterate on your design as well as allowing potential players/users to see what you are doing. |

Terrain texturing is nice and tight, movement seemed fluid, lighting looked good.

@OP pardon the off-topic. So, are you going to share which engine you're working with? I know for sure it's not Torque... it can't do a terrain that size and still have decent textures, plus you've got a working RPG UI :-) |

Want advice? Forget Kickstarter. Go the Minecraft way. Create a playable alpha that's fun to fiddle with. Then stay selling access for a few bucks apiece and keep developing.

Originally posted by tom_gore I personally think both are applicable, and could net a title more development funding. The nice thing about having a beta is its playable, so lets take a look at what minecraft did, a playable game you backed by purchase, but say we go back in time and minecraft was purchasable in beta release, but also had a kickstarter which gave perks to additional backing, good for the game developer and good for the backers. |

Have you created the graphics / coded the game from scratch?
If so this is amazing!! I wish I could learn how to create something like this!! |

Originally posted by XAPGames It is Bigworlds. I keep recommending it to you for WAC. I know, I know it does not have source but you can make your game and if successful, buy the source. BTW - WAC will port fairly easy since it is python driven engine. if you don't have Max or Maya and have to do some model fixing the collada exporter does work once you get it tweaked.
