What is "real"? How do you define "real"?

1/02/13 5:04:57 PM#41

GW2 is simply the best video game ever, IMHO.  It certainly has flaws (I wish we could hunt elite skills like in GW1), but overall I find it to be a lot of fun with a lot to do.

A lot to do....that's the kicker for some people.  This game is a GAME.  It's meant to be played casually just like any other game.  There are many people who seem to think an MMO is a second job and devote 40+ hours per week playing it.  No game in it's infancy can match that kind of play, if you want something new every 5 minutes.

I personally think there is a ton of stuff to do in the game.  I started off mainly exploring (not just map completion, but actually exploring) and doing my personal story.  I just finished my personal story last week and am now focusing on map completion and more exploration.  After that, I plan on doing more dungeons as I've barely done anything with those.  I also plan on getting more into WvWvW and possibly some sPvP, though that's not usually my thing.  In between that stuff - as in, when I get bored with those things after a little while - I'll work on crafting an alt characters.  Then when I get bored with that, I'll go back to the dungeons, etc.

I have barely done anything in terms of growing my guild and of course there is all the new stuff that Anet has been throwing at us, including the holiday stuff.

I haven't even mentioned jumping puzzles or grinding for legendaries.

I have found that if you play it like a game and actually take the time to look around and play with the story rather than just leveling as fast as possible, you'll find there is plenty to do.

Of course, if you just don't like the game mechanics, that's fine.  That type of thing is not for everyone and if it's not for you then, ok, go play something else.  But to say that there is nothing to do in the game, or too little to do, is disingenuous, IMO

You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!

Best mmo analogy eva !!

Man I wish I was as crazy as you thinking it's a good idea to spend my free time talking about crap.

Oh come on, you have almost 1600 posts here on and you dont talk about crap?

(which is what most of these games are and where our time goes anyway when we play them, down the crapper :)

ya who said that? its clearly not.

The problem is when someone say "Is it not? So which one is?".

You'll have loads of disagreement.

That is what happens with the MMORPG communities in general - it is easy to gather them to go criticize a game but not so easy to go praise an alternative.

I guess I should clarify things, just because it isn't the number one mmo doesn't mean I'm gonna grab up all the flaws of the game and list them, I love the game rated it a 10/10 I just don't see it being number one at all. Me saying its not #1 MMO is an opinion, again, its not a bad thing, it is a bad thing if I were to say "GW2 sucks, no way.". I still play GW2 and I love it, but its not number one.

I wasn't saying you were criticizing the game.

Just the general tone of the thread.

Still, people don't say "GW2 is not the number one. IMO X is", I guess for understandable reasons.

But actually isn't hard to have GW2 (or the entire Guild Wars franchise) as favourite MMORPG - it is different than many MMORPGs in several ways. I can also see people claiming SWG or EVE as their favourite MMORPGs even though they aren't my type of game.

Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders

As far as GW2 being #1, I could not get past the beta (I played about 30 minutes).  Did not find the game interesting or enjoy it at all.  Personally, it would not make my top 5 MMOs of all time.

I'd like to know that as well. I thought Age of Wushu was the most popular MMO in the world at the moment.

As for the number 1 MMO, I'm just going by websites like IGN and The majority of websites I've checked have Guild Wars 2 at their number 1 spot. Although, I found Guild Wars 1 more gripping personally.

It is probably a type of game that masses want.

For me, it is on the same level as Rift, SWTOR, TSW and similar games released since Warcraft.

the "No 1 MMO" is based off each individuals own opinion..

if it was based off of the industry,it would still be WoW.

Because alot of people do like it. Just because you have a negative opinion of something does not mean that other people don't have a positive opinion.

Just a question for thought.....if gw2 isn't the number 1 or even top 3 mmorpgs out then what current mmo is....and if you think another game is then y even think to try this game unless u weren't satisfied with what u had????? A lot of people enjoy gw2 and if u just look at forums u would think most hate it...but if u analyze the people names then u will realize its only about 30 or so people qqin lol

But I got bored fast of gw2 too, after getting 3 lvl 80s with full exo and full map completion, there is little else to do than WvW and fractals. Not so much a fan of fractals and WvW is really pointless right now IMO :P

Though I have to say that arenanet always did a great job on holiday events like halloween and christmas (gw1 and gw2)

How do you get bored "fast" with three level 80's that have 100% map completion?  I would say you absolutely love the game if you lvled three to 80 and have 100% completion on them.

I like the combat and the fact that it's not a quest grinder.  The later zones in the game really saved the game for me, as the earlier zones seem to have too many boring ass hearts and not much difficulty.  I would say TSW was my number 1 for the year but it was really close with GW2.  Either way MMO's have a really long way to go to be captivating like the old school MMO's were.

Sorry, I should've clarified more. This game kept me playing for about 2 months which is more than I hoped for. After that...I had no motivation to log back on my character. I just couldn't immerse myself with my character, the way I did with my breton in skyrim. Also I am not a real fan of the GW2 story. It just seems a bit too cheesy for my taste. :)

I played this for a while with a couple of friends and got to about level 50, and got extremely bored. But that's just me, my attention span for MMOs is very low as I've played so many. Guild Wars was a different and welcomed change to the traditional MMO, but I don't think it deserves the number one spot in any way.

After 50 levels I'd unlocked all of the skills I was ever going to use in the game. From then on I was simply killing enemies with said skills. At the start, the idea of changing skills depending on what weapons you have equipped was awesome! But then I came to realise after playing the game that I'd be stuck with these same skills until the end-game, which caused me to just lose interest and give up on the game. I was quite glad about it really, after finding out that the game has no real end-game content to speak of, and many people found the just hit a brick wall. I tried WvWvW and loved it! But after a while it became a bit monotonous, much like the skill system.

Rerolling and trying new characters didn't appeal to me... I'd played the classes I was interested in and still got bored of that. Levelling isn't what I'm interested in. I prefer competitive and challenging raid-type instances and a variety of skill sets to use. Guild Wars 1 did this perfectly in my opinion! I had a different set of skills for different occasions, with "Elite" skills I could unlock by completing certain objectives.

I really don't feel I got my monies worth for this game having played only 25 hours. I started of fun, and got grindy (Which I thought is what were trying to prevent?) Why is it at the top spot on most websites?!

What should be number 1 then? GW2 is simply the best MMO out there currently by the opinion of most that care to give their opinion. I agree with them lol, there really isn't a better MMO. TSW I like but it lacks in quality, content, and polish. Rift I like but only for the PvP and the class system, beyond that it's pretty typical MMO faire.

game is also real

I still prefer WoW and even GW (beside they are outdated and seems dead),
at least I played GW for like 4 years and WoW for like 3 years and was not even bored, but

after 3 months of GW2 I have nothing to enjoy and keep playing as have nothing better to do.

I guess I would prefer some discovery at beta or so then said #1 game.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

A few quick things off the top of my head...

Southsun Cove

New jumping puzzles across the whole world, not only max level areas

New dynamic events, also across the whole world

New sPvP maps

Fractals of the Mists, the new dungeon which progressively gets harder

... and that doesn't even cover the updates scheduled for January and February which, they claim, will be adding a full expansion worth of content, nor does it include the constant balancing and bug fixing that any good company should have ongoing, or the Holiday events.

Oderint, dum metuant.

I tried to return to the game several times, mostly because the great visuals. But I was always bored after 20 minutes. I had played one Warrior to max level, and my interest simply died since then. I feel it's truly a pity. I really would WANT to enjoy it. But it's just way too casual and dull for me. *shrug*

Here are the reasons I don't play GW2:

1. It's not an RPG, it's a fantasy-themed 3rd person shooter.

2. PvE was trivial and incredibly easy for me (karma grinding was horrible).

3. Group mechanics are virtually nonexistent.

4. Despite the inclusion of 'dynamic events', the world is still static.

5. WvWvW is pointless, as individuals have no real influence on the zerg (in SPvP, it's clear who the winners are, even if your team loses).

6. The insane number of bugs and balance issues frustrated me.

7. It's easily the most anti-social MMO I've ever played (mainly due to #3).

Feel free to disagree with me. I won't hate you for liking GW2, but there are other games I'd rather be playing.

Definition for innovation is below. Your welcome.

1/02/13 8:53:08 PM#60

How the world blends together. The Dynamic events add a sort of life. While they can get repetitive, focusing on one event chain and listening to the story can be a great way to see the little efforts put into the game. Once, I started a chain by talking to some random kids. Theysaid they found a treasure map, so they went off. On the way, we met a troll thing called grubb who we made friends with. We fought several creatures, and finally made to the "X". However, one of the kids ntoiced somehting in the water. It said it was coming towards them. It was at this point I freaked out and yelled into map chat "CAN I GET SOME HELP!!!!!". Of course, it was a champion monster that defended the treasure. With the help of several others who met at my direction, we defeated the beast and saved the kids. Then, one of their mothers came to pick them up unaware of the crap we all went through for the kids, not even believing our adventure.

Another is in some swamp. It is to escort some soldiers through with a pack bull full of explosives. The soldiers aiding in the transport kept yelling "Hold the undead back! If the pack dolyak goes, we all go!" So me and a Charr stranger (which is another wonderufl thing... the open grouping) worked together. People may say this game is unsocial, however talking and typing "Lfg need healer" is not social. What is is belnding your abilities together  to create different affects, rexxing one another, beoing confident that this complete stranger who you never even talked to will help you through. That is being social and helping the community. Combo effects aid this further, basic skills can create other special affects when combined. In later zones, people will have a rather large idea on how to make these and what they are, and they are "required" to be succesful at some things. So on to the pack story, we were going along taking out the swarming undead that seeked to remove humans. The soldiers began to grow hopeful of destroying the local lych that controlled these things. We came to a large tower, and a new event started: to escort a bomb carrier to a weak spot and destory the tower. Me and the Charr, who were still together without a word, moved with this "agile" soldier. We came to the lych's tower, placed the bomb and BOOM. Unlike in other games, where quests have little if any effect on the enviroment, the tower compeltely fell. This could be seen from across the map. A Group Event started... to end the Lych. Already, more people were coming without warning or heed to aid in this battle. The soldiers were primed and ready and... well you will have to play to find out :P.

The lack of a trinity is a godsend. Trinity ends up with people being mean, seclusion of specific people, and the forcing of people to take other "paths" to compelte their objective. Instead, there is a "Unholy Trinity": Control, Damage, Support. Now,, support isnt direct healing. Support is creating barriers to protect allies, using skills that give a small amount of health to surrounding people, standing on front of allies to take the kill shot from the boss. Damage is damage, it can be spike damage, damage over time, damage from conditirons, even damage from those combo fields I mentioned earlier.

Lack of progression/ grind. While there is some progression now (ascended gear), it has hardly had any effect on the overall game. Grind is left for those super cool looking gear, not that super powerful. Even then, there are several ways. Economically, buying, crafting, fighting, dungeoneering.... many different ways, even ascended gear will be introduced to the general game world.

Monthly updates/ great staff. While balancing is a ongoing issue, (especially for engineer) the general gameplay is rather balanced and fair, especially compared to the typical MMOs that have been out much longer. Constant looking to make the game bigger AND better is wonderful, as shown by the rather well put together events such as Karka, Halloween, Christmas, and even the BWE events. Not only does this show pride in their work, it shows the flexibilty of the game engine, which I hope will be put to even further use with the "expansion worthy" content coming in this month and February.

This is why the game is good to me.
