OP  12/31/12 5:55:41 AM#1

I just went back to the TERA website to do a little digging and review, I did buy the collectors of this game, had problems with accepting their EULA because the Agreement site on the back of the manual was an invalid link, and a lot of mslead into believe that I would have full access to the game and unlimited customizations for my monthly fee I was wrong.

If you want to play Tera  or like it, or are a Fan of TERA,  it is up to you, but this is the reason I don't play it right here.

These three links, I am required to buy items if I want to enjoy my game my way, I would rather be playing APB Reloaded if it wasn't for gamers first owning the game.

Yes I do believe they have "Chrono Scroll" But still I want freedom to customize like EVE Online.

Oh and these cosmetic items on their site Should be "Account Bound" & Unlimited use not one per character or some crazy thing like this no point in that.

2. Nexon

I remember the promise with combat arms that the game would always be fair and fun for F2P and P2P players but this was ruined when they added specialists.

Vindictus another big failure they can add VELLA all they like to try to lure new players into the game, but if you look at it its Pay 2 Enjoy sure its free you can play the game looking very ugly if you want or you can probabily like over $500 to unlock all the items slots per account, customize a character unlock every hair so you can freely customize as you please and good lord. Plus lets not forget all the banned accounts and failure of Nexon to respond to consumers fast enough they were banned without reason too.

3. Gamers First

Fallen Earth, Lack of GM support needless to say you can GRIEF people all day and have fun doing it back when I played you could faction kill people in PVP zones over and over again no concequences. You report  the people harassing you on their own forums, or in game nothing happens. But when a clan has Hazmat friends and they report you for making somewhat a racist comment You get IMMEDIATELY banned for like a week ( NO Warning.)  Now this game has so many unfair advantages in cash shop its not even worth playing and if you enjoy Fallen Earth you sohuld play The Secret World.

APB reloaded isn't as bad of GM's so far, but I feel that APB reloaded again just isn't my type of game spend hundreds of dollars for guns.

The other general problem with gamers first is management sucks the reason I currently do not actively play games by their company.I originally Liked APB reloaded before G1 took control problem I see is Gamers First doesn't know how to run a business and keep its customers happy.

4. Perfect World, I really get sick of the conversion system how confusing it is convert your Real Life money to Gold I think it was then convert these to Leafs, or some other currency for games. No problem with customer service so far just the game and everything in the cash shop is priced too high not worth my Dollar.

5. Age OF Conan, It was listed as a ADULT- MMORPG, yet I could never get hooked into it for it being such it didn't feel like it, armors covered everything combat felt boring.

7. The Secret World, Police Station area starting out lags like hell, Customization costs Real Money except for in game items and sucks for the most part even Buy 2 Play they could have done way better.

8. Lineage 2, Aion, NCsoft is a failure of a company your Lineage 2 Account gets compromised because of their failure of security they do nothing at all. My account was safe for years unitl it went F2P then mysteriously lost every item worth value, and now the Cash Shop in both games is my god Pay 2 ENJOY Give me a flat rate and I would play a game since security was updated better but not something insane.

9. SWTOR, Massive FAILURE, lack of customization, FREE 2 Play benefits too restricting, OverAll the game needs major improvements, and again tab target style its meh. I know this game has its fan's but when I see some good improvements I will give it another try.

On a note.

It really would be wise of FunCom, & BioWare/SWTOR Devs, if they would look at deviant art and put some of that into their games instead of putting crappy armors, hair that looks like plastic even in max graphics its like GRR.

10.  I really wouldn't call this a MMORPG, but since they call themselves such I will list it.  NoR, is a so called MMORPG in Second Life their official site

Anyways to be specific this MMORPG has so many problems its not funny. GM Corruption to the highest I have ever seen taking sides with other players and people who actually pay over the Free Players. Helping CopyBotters from illicit sites to cheat in their community and copy avatars illegally which ruins not only their community but the merchants who work hard and others in SL. This is usually done under the table, but GM's take no one seriously when its reported they will listen to their friends and friends of friends lies rumors and not even investigate.

The worst part is their Update, or Meter called Unity Core Combat System/Meter The meter illegally logs peoples IP's without any agreement, or Terms OF Service actually provided on wearing the meter I have had friends come to me scared because they worse the meter and this community found out their alternate accounts. Their ability to ban people from a meter as I have read from their site it proves the meter collects information without consent the even scary part is the fact that Viewer 2 uses and requires Java, and they could exploit this to compromise the identity of users a lot worse maybe even an account. Yes I know IP address alone isn't private but still they grief you.

Either way if you are a SL player I would avoid this so called MMORPG all together due to the Drama, and even if you just play there you are helping Griefers because there are bots that sit in this sim copying entire avats and sharing them so it effects the community as a whole. This will all be denied by their STAFF, and GM's of course. But I have played there and experienced the issues first hand not including what others have seen or experienced.

6. I feel the next biggest flops in MMO history maybe the following but only time will tell.

1. The War Z > I feel it will be a failure because of the management team last time I heard death time was 24 hours, and even death as 1 hour some people die a freaking lot especially being a new player, campers are a big problem they just dont seem to use their brains to develop properly.

2. Absolute Force Online >, I feel their Game will be a faiure because of how much the cash shop costs how expensive the game is right now they don't seem to listen much live support offline a lot of the time. Other than that the admin, and moderator on the forum seem pretty chill usually.

3. Fire Fall > Too many bugs, do what kill aliens all day? Characters do look too cartoony, hair looks unreal.

Keep in mind these three games are still in Beta, but I honestly have my doubts in them they could be good or they could be a failure it really depends on a lot.

Current List of non failures. ( Short List of what I believe wasn't such a failure.)

1. Guild Wars 2, I dont exactly love the game to me it gets boring dungeons having to have groups to constantly run them of course it gets boring after awhile. However they did their cash shop properly for the most part you do not have to use any real life money everything can be obtained for low costs. This could change. The only thing I somewhat dislike is the cost to customize characters but again this is fairly cheap and easy to get with in game gold, and again its Free 2 Play, and no where as expensive as Nexon, Perfect World, or TERA.

2. EVE Online, PLEX again another step in the right direction, FREE Unlimited customization except for resulpt no charge to change my hair as much as I want or such its great. Currently I have 3 EVE accounts.

3. Dark Fall, was another MMO that offered Barber Shops unlimited customizations.

4. WOW I believe it was the same way here.

5. League OF Legends. (Excluding Trolls, and Tribunal of course, that makes this game bad.)  gameplay wise however it seems good to me, and the cash shop isn't pay 2 win or pay 2 enjoy.

6. Tribes Ascend/ Global Agenda, although it lacks good content for me to want to stay around much.

In general I am tired of all these so called F2P MMORPG's that feel like they are Pay 2 Enjoy instead of Free 2 Play, I just can't stand playing them. I am also sick of all these so called MMORPG's that are being released run by poor community, GM's, or developed very poorly including cash shops which absolutely suck.

For those who think I am too negative,  I would honestly rather have something good to say but there are very few MMORPG, or MMO's out there that give me something to say good about a MMORPG, make me like it I will recommend and give it a thumbs up.

Keep in mind these are just my 2 cents, I know every game has its fans, or people who like it so if you like it good, but these are the reason I don't play many titles or spend much money in them.

Overall you seem to rate your games on how easy it is, or how much it may cost to customize your character. This is totally a foreign concept to me, I rarely care what my Avatar looks like, in fact I am not sure I've ever gone back and changed their looks outside of armor swaps in over 10 years of playing.

I too have 3 EVE accounts and didn't even know you could change their looks outside of the one time they forced us to when Incarna launched. For me it's all about the gameplay so my list of worst games might actually be quite similar but for entirely different reasons.

But then again, I haven't played nearly as many titles as you, you must have a lot more free time to game than I, or don't concentrate on one or two particular titles as I do.

Arrogant, Condescending, Dismissive, Elitist, "Meany", you speak as if these are bad things?
Still currently "subscribed" to EVE, and only EVE!!!

Currently playing EVE, SMITE, ArcheAge, and Combat Arms

12/31/12 7:32:37 AM#3

I just skimmed the list and the only failure I really see is a possible lack of perspective on your part.

  • Combat Arms - play in rooms that don't allow specs if you feel they are out of balance.
  • Vindictus - Feeling that you need to spend 500 dollars on hairstyles in order to succeed in the game is a personal issue on your part, not a flaw with the game.
  • Lineage 2 a failure???
  • Fallen Earth - You complained that factions are killing each other in the faction PVP zones. You also said there was no ingame support but then complained people got "IMMEDIATELY" banned for racist comments. You don't see either of those as... odd?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but to claim some of these games are failures or the reasons given seems a bit of a stretch.

Been playing TERA for 8 months...since the first month of release I have not payed one penny IRL. Not for my subscription or cosmetics.

You can buy it all with in game gold, subscription, mounts, even race changes and appearance changes. so whatever rambling you have about the cash shop is moot.

Since it's the only MMO i'm currently playing it's the only one I felt like commenting on.

Biggest failures/disappointments for me:

1. GW2.

2. DAoC's expansions

3. Warhammer Online

4. AoC

5. WoW's expansions

The failures are debatable, but you, in my opinion, need help.

Tera a failure because they have website problems? Because of sexy attire you can buy? Because you somehow understand under customization "anything whenever", and not just on character creation and "when i pay for special things like sexy attire" ?

Lineage 2 a failure? And for usual account security mess? By this definition wow, d3 and rift are failure^infinity because they actually got some customer data compromised, and rift session security was a joke.

Just saying, if people make failure lists, it is kinda good behavior that they try to stay neutral.

Flame on!

Always an indicator of a game that isn't a failure...........the barber shop.

While I find the OP's list to be somewhat... Well, odd would be a kind way of putting it, I do think Fallen Earth belongs on any biggest MMO failures list. Not, mind you, because I think FE was a bad game, but exactly because it could have been great.

It's damning with faint praise, but FE is the poster child for "potential", with all the good and (mostly) bad that implies in the MMO world.

It was in many ways what a lot of people around here claim they want in a game. It had first-person "action" combat long before Tera invented it. It had a deep and complex (well, as deep and complex as any MMO out, even if that does mean parking-lot-puddle deep) crafting system. Complex and engaging lore, An absolutely huge world to explore -- the biggest, I think, of any MMO I've ever played. An interesting, and, in my experience, relatively unique mount system. No classes, no meaningful trinity, an advancement system that makes (or, at least, made, changes having simplified things some) TSW's ability wheel look simple and rigid by comparison, and (originally) a faction system that mattered (too much, as it turned out).

All that, and no fantasy, no elves, no dwarfs, and no magi... Err, well only kinda-sorta magic -- mutant skills were, after all, often referred to as 'HPC' (Harry Potter Crap).

It had so much going for it, and yet all that's left of it now is a husk with barely a pulse, laying in a hospital with Dr G1st trying to squeeze just one more pint of blood out of it.

Someone should  make a study manual out of FE, all the things that went right and so many other things that went wrong, and have it be required reading for Game Design 101. They had a (relatively) unique product, a passionate lead designer, a good design team, passionate and nigh unto rabid playerbase. But they launched too early, the game was buggy as hell (especially annoying when AP quests were bugged, and they often were). The perceived need to 'spin the wheel' (a function of the faction and AP systems) put many off, as did the near requirement to have a crafter character (albeit for many others, myself included, this was a plus). Travel issues inherent in a game world of that size with no fast travel system (something later added, sorta) made it feel, and pretty much be, a single-player, and often very lonely (one could easily go a very long time, in a world that size, without seeing another player) experience. The lack of a "re-spec" system (something later added) made it relatively easy to gimp your character and, worse, made it impossible for Icarus to make sweeping adjustments that were necessary. The game had some of the worst balance issues, rivaling even WAR, with melee characters having overwhelming advantages in multiple areas for much of the game's early run.

And then there was the total lack of endgame. Not the game's biggest issue, surprisingly, as for reasons no one seems to have quite ever gotten a handle on the bulk of the population fall-off seems to happen in S2, long before you've run out of content. Still, it did hurt the game more than a tad. Not that there was ever supposed to be an end-game, per se, there wasn't supposed to be a need of one since content updates were going to be fast-and-furious. That didn't happen, though. S4, promised to be "near ready" before FE even launched, ended up being released piecemeal years after it was promised (or, frankly, would have done any good). The hoped-for (banked on, might be more appropriate) income from selling their game engine never materialized (given it had as many problems as innovations, this really shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone, but it appears it did). The lead dev "left" -- read here, was given the heave-ho -- for greener pastures, and the focus of the game changed drastically. The lead dev position changed hands so often people started losing track of who it was this week and the focus of the game changed drastically, chasing away much of the playerbase in the process. Arenas (here called "Bloodsports"), something literally no one had been asking for and which didn't make any sense lore-wise, were disastrously added, in the process re-defining the term 'buggy'.

Finally, mercifully, Icarus cratered, and, with all the class of a New York Cabby, G1st came in to pick at the corpse looking for loose change.

Warhammer, AoC, ToR, Rift, whatever, if one wishes to call them failures it's not like it matters. They all had, and have, their unique ideas, but in the end they're variations on a theme and whether they succeed or fail the good of them will be absorbed into what is, and likely for the foreseeable future will continue to be, a fairly healthy tab-target themepark fantasy MMO market. FE was different, though, truly so, and much of what made it unique and fun cannot be folded into other existing games and designs, the basic structure was too different.

By necessity, much of what made FE a fun game dies with it -- at least until someone comes out with another game like it, something made less than likely by its failure.

That, it seems to me, is a true failure. And, unlike the all too common attempts around here to call something a failure just because we don't like it, one that should make no one happy.

It's my job to be objective, it's my right to have an opinion.

12/31/12 9:19:19 AM#9

How can Final Fantasy 14 not be on this list?

Name me any other game that was so mediocre that the game company had to buy-back it's own product to prevent people from using it. Then they had a formal written apology to their fans, fired the entire dev team, re-hired a new development team, and had to essentially re-make their game for the last 2 years (after the initial 4 years of development) to make it a (hopefully) on-par title (not even an exceptional game).

There's really not a game that comes to mind that failed that badly. The only reason it's even still possible is because SE refuses to let their flagship title fail.

Other than that, I'd have to say Vanguard, or Age of Conan. They were absolutely abysmal.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

I don't think I've ever seen a rant that long that focused mostly on character custimization as reasons for failing. Maybe mmos aren't for you. You should find a dress up game or something.

OP  12/31/12 9:41:39 AM#12

Well I guess you can say Second Life, and APB Reloaded changed how I think about MMORPG based games when it comes to customization I would rather have the free to play how I want and at the same time customize an avatar how I want for a flat fee which is why I left Tera after paying for one month. To be honest I dont even have a week of play time total in Tera because at launch it bugged out for me and after that I just got frigging bored then I heard Cash Shop I quit.

The reason is because TERA as a MMO should offer the unlimited customizations for example, there is no reason to get greedy on top of a subscription, and even FREE 2 Play MMO's are just too greedy and charge way too much these days which to my play style in a MMO make it Pay 2 Enjoy its no longer FREE 2 Play.

There is absolutely no reason Enmasse should limit the number of cosmetic items to a single character when you purchase them they should be accessable to all characters. They already have the function for unlimited mounts, and collectors items no reason they should limit my choices even more. They are just greedy and I am showing them with my debate and wallet + Complaints.

In other words some MMORPG's do not even deserve to be called a MMORPG in my view. If I didn't care about customization it would be in games like Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 for example it doesn't matter, or a game like MW3, or Counter Strike although these are not classified as MMORPG titles except for D3 maybe. "Although Diablo 3 Could Have been improved" Back in the day Customization wasn't a big deal, but MMO's evolved, and now all MMO's since like Lineage 2 2 was released but more less around 2008 and up should offer high detailed customizations to everyone and packaged deals instead of making a game feel like a cash hog or pay 2 enjoy.

Customization in the day wasn't a big thing and when it came out it wasn't this bad until all the foreign countries at least from my point of view started doing this with Micro Transactions then in my eyes they just got really greedy.

For example in Tera if I changed my armor set and wanted to modify a detail on my character I would have to pay $14 I think it is to do it I just think this is highway robbery at least the way I see it.

There is also no reason that "Fallen Earth" as a game should charge for Respecs, yes they do it because its F2P but this is another thing that drives me away from the game besides customization, Freedom of Play is being restricted. The game itself wasn't so bad "Gamers First" are the ones that ruin in my eyes every game they touch just like "Nexon".

My Racist comment in Fallen Earth wasn't exactly so racist, In fact I never used a racist word I was trolled by someone who started the topic debate on races in real life and I said something similar to ***Insert Race Here*** in my area is always driving and talking on cellphones and something like this and a few other things. Which is actually a true statement, however the person had hazmat friends trolled and got all their friends to QQ to a GM who then banned my account for like 7 days I think it was completely stupid. I am like 99% sure I could say this comment in almost any MMORPG I would not get banned becaues of the fact there is an ignore button, or mute button and people can use it. I could understand the actual racist words or something but they were not. Also take a look at the fact I dumped $300 into the game, the person who reported me and got his Troll clan to do it for the laughs, and the fact that my account was always in good standing, and then the reason for an immediate 7 day ban lol? This would be equal to getting a 7 day ban in wow for saying the F OFF to a troll which they sent a warning to my account saying not to use the 4 letter word and the dicitionary definiton.

To be more specific about that clan incident, I reported a troll video posted on their forums about me without express consent, and the GM's didn't remove it. I reported their constant in game harassment spawn camping and ruining the enjoyment of a game and the GM's refused to do anything yet again I lost $300 face it. Based on what I know I got on comms with the clan that invited me to join them and they mistaked me for being someone else because apparently I sound like someone else that did something maybe robbed a guild vault who knows. All I know is that gamers first Doesn't do anything and the GM's in that game for example favor their hazmat buddies and they support griefing, and trolling thats all there was to it. Gamers First GM's are a laugh they tell you they will check something I see they did not remove or edit the post, I contact them like a week later they tell me they are looking into it? How worse can you get.

Either way I am currently playing EVE, Yes it somewhat gets boring sometimes, but it offers pretty much everything I look foward to in a MMO, and Hopefully DarkFall 2.0 will as well as they did in DarkFall 1 which will actually keep me busy.

The only two games that I would deem a failure was Warhammer and Mortal Onlilne.

You can't talk about the biggest fail MMOs without mentioning Mortal Online.

One thing makes me happy , if i don't like a game (and everything that comes with it )i just don't play it... simple as that .

Cash shop here, cash shop there, pay to win, free to play blablabla.... companies wanna make money.... No shit !

Games offering vanity items/mounts are far from a failure in my eyes.

Especially since, in Tera's case, buying a leotard (which is ridiculous in the least) isn't really part of core game play.

I would say a game is a failure if:

1, item shop selling powerful items/gold

2, item shop everywhere you look (my personal peeve but in reality not a failure as long as they don't sell items needed to access content in the game

3, and on a more serious note, games that have closed down because they couldn't retain a player base large enough to support it

4, games that were not able to meet the requirements of what they were trying to do. not including features, not implementing features well, etc.

5, buggy messes that are unplayable.

edit: and for the record, I'm very vain in games. I even got a title for it in Warhammer because I dyed my armor all the time. Still, for me it's more about how I look than how I was able to look that way.

Reminded me of my time in DAOC, when people used to regularly dye their armor all sorts of colors and it was pretty cool.  I generally went with all Forest Green sets while leveling up until 50, once you got to the main RVR pretty much Black was the only acceptable color, as it really did mask you from the enemy, especially at night.

Arrogant, Condescending, Dismissive, Elitist, "Meany", you speak as if these are bad things?
Still currently "subscribed" to EVE, and only EVE!!!

No reason?!?!?!  They didn't even let you buy them at first because they can be game breaking.

Because Fallen Earth has no "classes" having free repecs would lead ot people leveling up with the easiest build and then instantly switching to the flavour of the month at will and at the highest level. . they could also get to highest level and then switch to a crafter with all the mats they gathered.   I have 3 full repsecs sitting in my bank as rewards and I have not used one yet.

You can put points into whatever you want in the game. . freedom of play is the least restriced I have seen.  You don't have to choose a class and stick with it. . sure there are cookie cutter builds but seriously "freedom of play" being restricted?

I don't mean this in a bad way but I think you are getting upset because you want the opposite of most people.  Most people are okay with F2P as long as the cash shop is mostly cosmetic.  You seem to want those things more.

The examples you use like Darkfall (unlimited barber?) have sub fee etc.  F2P is going to kill you.

Right back to OP:

For me personally it was MO and Xsyon simply because of the potential that was never met.. . good ideas. . bad implementation?  Too slow more likely but they will have a hard time surviving.  These are games I wanted to succeed and played for a bit.

TSW is an unmitigated success. Yes, it has the same problems all funcom games are plagued by, but people are playing it, and enjoying it, and its population is growing *in spite of* Funcom.

SWTOR - yes, failure based on the exodus after launch, but I think they actually made money at launch based on sales. The question will be whether they can afford to produce high-quality story lines to follow up the ones they made for launch. My guess will be "no", so I'd classify it as a failure as well.

AoC - yes, a failure at launch, but it maintains a stable player base now. I'm not going back based on what I experienced at launch, but...

I don't know any of the other games you mentioned, so... I'll just add these:

WAR - clearly goes in the "failure" category"

LOTRO - what was a success is turning into a failure, and there's currently an exodus away from the game. Look for this one to die within the next 2 years. I don't expect it to survive its next paid expansion.

DDO - Still surprisingly successful.

Rift - an awesome success for a title that had no external franchise attached, unlike the others in my list (I can't remember what that's called... but SWTOR has SW, AoC has conan, Lotro has Lotr, DDO has D&D)

GW2 - I'm not sure whether this is a success. I stopped playing, because it brought nothing special to the table at end-game.

That's just a list of the highest profile games and companies that you've disliked.  That's not at all the same as being a failure.

Stargate Worlds, on the other hand, is what a real failure looks like.
